Giant otters are one of the toughest creatures in the Amazon jungle. Not only are they living in a lake in the middle of the Peruvian Amazon, but they are also surrounded by three hundred black caiman, anaconda, jaguar and puma. Diablo the giant otter also has six unruly pups to keep from harm, and educate in the ways of the jungle. This otter dad certainly has his paws full. Leading wildlife cameraman Charlie Hamilton-James follows the family in their remarkable location over the course of a whole season, through their ups, downs, and the start of a new generation of otters.
Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you'll find 50 years worth of astounding, entertaining, thought-provoking and educational natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn't get more exciting than this.

  • To those who are shocked to see this, 1. Giant River Otters are not your normal next door otter. They are bigger, stronger, more agile, hunt in large group, like Wild Dogs in Africa 2. Caiman is NOT a crocodile, that appears in your nightmare or Gustave, Lake Placid & Crawl. They are the least aggresive species of the family & most of them are a size of monitor lizard.

Furthermore, atypical for weasels, giant otters are highly social and function very much like wolf packs, a family unit made up of the father, mother and variously aged offspring from several seasons.

  • It's all about perspective. If the video was following that Caiman's life, maybe it was a good father who was just trying to get some food for his family and little ones back home but he died by marauding group of killer otters. Now little caiman's are left without a father. See what I mean? In nature, nobody is the good or bad guys. They are all just trying to survive. Humans pick sides because that's what we do. It's all about perspective.

    • Most of us are impressed that the Otters, those cute little guys, chose to fight over flight. It's not often that you see small creatures cooperating to take down an opponent several times their size. The otters suffered some casualties so this is kind of even. The caiman wanted food and the otters wanted to eliminate a threat, the concept of good and evil doesn't hold much weight in the wild.

      @RX7jkr@RX7jkr5 жыл бұрын
    • Zero Regrets You're a perfect example of a person taking sides with the otters. That caiman was attacked by the otters at first as well, it's not flight or fight my the otters it's the otters choosing to fight and the caiman chose to fight Edit: The otters were clearly ferocious and the main predator of the area they were in, it's not uncommon for animals to hunt in packs.

In Brazil we have the widely known case in which a man jumped into the enclosure of otters in Brasilia's Zoo, in order to save a little boy who had accidentally fallen in it. The man was an army sargeant, and he was eaten alive by a group of zoo otters (the boy was saved, however). And these were animals raised in captivity. One can just imagine what these animals are capable of in nature!

    • Actually I saw this documentary and the caiman was actually trying to eat the Cubs so they were trying to kill it and did kill it as it was a threat to them. Also he took 2 Cubs with him.

    • Reptiles have very low endurance. Mammals easily outperform them at vigorous task. Combine that with being outnumbered the Caiman needed to escape not fight.
