Casting Resin Fishing Lures: a step-by-step on making resin copies of your wooden lure carving

I hope you enjoy this step-by-step tutorial on how to make a DIY resin handmade topwater fishing lure. In a previous video of this lure making series, we went over the process of detail carving a wooden walk-the-dog style bait. These WTD lures have a great action that are perfect for catching freshwater and saltwater fish such as tuna, redfish, red drum, speckled trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, spotted bass and many more. You can use this same process to make other types of lures like poppers, minnows, crankbaits, jerkbaits, wakebaits, walking baits, buzzbaits, swimbaits, glidebaits or any custom bait you can dream of.

  • Great work as always! For the quantity of resin I think u need to go for cubic centimeters instead of grams due to the different specific weights. With your calculations, a resin that is 1.15 g/cc one component and 1 g/cc the other, u will have 32 cc of resin, but the 4 grams of microballoons have an approximate volume of 28 cc(.15 g/cc). You find yourself with 60cc of material for a lure that is 32cc, with 28cc of waste. Just my 2 cents😁 Merry christmas and a happy New Year !😄

  • Thx again for the great video! I took a shot at my first cast today and worked great but the lure is not as floaty as I wanted - did you experiment on how far past the 10% can we go to get maximum floatation without compromising strength? Thx!!!!

    @Fksu@Fksu Жыл бұрын
    • It's great to hear your first mold came out perfect! I have gone higher on the microspheres. The bigger the lure, the harder it is to get it poured in the mold fast enough. Your environmental conditions also play a role in how quickly the resin sets up. You'll have to experiment with your particular lure in your particular conditions to see how far you can push the ratio. Keep track of your recipe because once you perfect it you don't want to forget it!

      @zimmtex@zimmtex Жыл бұрын
  • You do not have to let the water overflow, just place the bowl with the water on the scale, zero it, place the lure in the water and submerge it, read the scale. What ever weight is now on the scale is the weight of the lure if neutral boyancy.

    • Hello! Sorry to hear you are having this issue. I haven't personally had this happen to me, but I do have a few ideas for you (in order of my opinion of likelihood). 1) the resin may not have been fully degreased before you primed it. This could result in poor adhesion. 2) the resin might not have been completely cured when you primed it. Differences in climate can affect curing time. If the resin was still off gassing it could result in bubbles. 3) the primer might not have been fully dried when you started painting with acrylic. 4) primer incompatible with acrylic. Resin is a good material and it really increases production of detailed lures once you find the right recipe. Best of luck to you, I hope this helps.

  • Hi, how do you treat holes and bubbles that form at the top of the piece?

    @dep305@dep305 Жыл бұрын
    • I don't always get bubbles, but when I do, it depends on their size. If it's one or two big bubbles, I fill them with superglue and instacure. If it's a lot of tiny bubbles, you can smear it with bondo and sand it smooth.

    • I think breathing in any kind of dust or particles is bad. I've been investing in more and more filtration equipment like masks/respirators, air filters and taking time to vaccum the shop. I realize how easy it is to get complacent and we've all been guilty of not using ppe, but I do believe it is really important to take care of yourself.

      @zimmtex@zimmtex Жыл бұрын
  • 6:29 There is an easier method for this as well. Place the pint directly on the scale, don't overfill it like you did here. Then press the lure completely in the water, but make sure, it doesn't touch the bottom or walls. Then just check the weight on the scale. That's the amount of water your lure volume replaces. This works as long as you don't let the lure sink to the bottom. When it does, you'll notice that you're no longer weighing the replaced volume, but the weight of the lure itself. 1grams of water = 1 ml -> 1 cubic centimeter (cube of 1cm*1cm*1cm). Also. Weight of resin is not the same as weight of water. Especially when you mix in the VERY LIGHT microspheres. You did it by weight, not by volume. Hence the excess amount of resin+spheres.. You're mixing up the volume and weight totally in this video.. Great guide otherwise. Thank you :)

  • I have seen people actually using rice instead of water, due to having a closer density to the resin than water. They fill up the mold with the rice (not minute rice type, but actual real unadulterated rice) and then weight the rice.

    @benstoth@benstoth Жыл бұрын
    • To be honest, I don't really know of anyone who saves money making their own lures. Equipment cost, and material waste from trial and error are fairly high. Unfortunately I don't have any numbers to share because I don't currently sell lures and don't track embodied cost. However, I can say the extra cost is worth it to me because I enjoy making them.
