Some unexpected things became a surprise to me in my first week in California.

  • That's a lesson to everyone-if you go to Philippines and introduce a western lifestyle to your filipina girl/family, build them houses, fed with money they haven't dare to dream, of course you will go broke sooner rather than later.

  • I asked my inlaws before I got involved with their daughter what financially would be expected of me since i was taking my wife away from them and she was helping them with her job. They said i didn't need to give them anything if i didn't want to. I wanted to get my mother in-law a refrigerator after i visited and noticed she didn't have one. She shared with her sister in-law next door. It took my wife 3 months to finally get her one. Her Dad got hurt at work. Needed help with a motorcycle payment. We just paid it off. I have never been asked for anything again. They're all good people. I love my inlaws in Leyte. The aunts are funny. They treat the foreigner well.

  • Tim just a suggestion, I did the same, paid rent for storage for a couple years. Then my dad said, why don't you sell it. Its getting old and you can buy the stuff again. Add up the total amount for rent, here 48mo. X 400 = 19,200 dollars! Thats a lot of furniture. Just a suggestion! Best regards Brian M.

  • i returned to the us broke also, after 5 years in PI, i arrived in los angeles without a penny, i borrowed money from my family to go to denver then PA, i worked 11 months and managed to save enough to come back to my wife and kids and keep us alive until social security starts. its an odd scary feeling being stranded in los angles dragging your luggage beside homeless people dragging luggage.

But in Los Angeles, there are still lines to wait on if you do go in person, but not the nightmare that it was when I arrived 40 years ago before the internet came along and assumed all of these basic tasks.

And I really appreciate what you say about language, nuance, and a conveying a sense of humor! . . .it really is a challenge isn't it? I am planning to go to the Philipines - just to visit and see this Dumagete place that everyone is talking about , , , really, just to experience the community . . sit around and talk to people like me for awhile . . . I don't get to do that much here. It's my own fault I suppose . . .if I had been smarter and more successful . . . I TOO would be able to pay $60 for a Burritto in NewPort Beach!! (Wow). • I know what you mean. It takes so long to do stuff in the Philippines, simple stuff like a drivers licence, or even changing ownership of a car which in my country takes 5mins online, But PH it can take up a whole day of waiting in cues, go there fill this out, go here to get it stamped, go back there to verify, get your photo taken with your car, make a trip to the bank to pay a fee, return with the stamped receipt, each process with a long cue and a long wait, before you know it the day is gone. But it does employ a lot of people with all the hoops you have to jump through. It teaches you patience, which is a good thing.

  • It same in England many of my Filipino friends have perfect OP English accents very posh and nice, oh yeah the Philippines can be boring as you won't get to talk on a level to which we are accustomed with people generally! It is very important in any relationship to wait for the right one there otherwise your brain will not be stimulated. I was basically away from England since 1996 and lived in the Philippines, Bahrain, and Abu Dhabi. I got back to the UK last year and can't believe how things have changed. No one uses Cash. I went to Makati after the lockdown and most of my favorite places closed down..Cafe Havana has gone, and so many memories are now confined to the past.

I’m used to Filipina nurses and their accents, so when I first spoke to my GF I was shocked to hear a normal “valley girl” voice without accent. All of her older siblings still have the accent. She’s the baby and the one American born child they had.

  • Even with all of our imperfections in business, things do manage to function better than a lot of other countries. The biggest problem is that Americans tend not to appreciate how well things work here because this is the only system they have ever had to deal with. Another lesson I learned many years ago is "DO IT IN PERSON". I found many years ago that it is harder for one to tell you "NO" in person than on the phone or via email and that's provided you approach them with an attitude that signals "I NEED HELP".

  • Hi Tim, I assume that your parents live in Newport Beach. If so, we are neighbors. My husband and I still maintain a house in Irvine which is contiguous to Newport Beach. We moved to Summerlin, Las Vegas, Nevada to retire. We just go back and forth (Irvine, Ca. and Summerlin, NV). You mentioned that in the PH, you live in Leyte. I was born and raised in Tacloban City, Leyte, PH. I still have a family in Leyte. Our family used to own a Furniture factory and store and also a Trucking business in Tacloban but the businesses closed when the elders passed away and nobody wants to continue the heritage/legacy. Where in Leyte do you live?

  • Hey Tim. I’ve been living in the Philippines for the past two years and expecting my first child and yeah my finances have become pretty well depleted too. It’s really not that much cheaper in the Philippines at all. Especially when you factor that medical care and food costs in to it with no government assistance in to it. And things definitely don’t work here.

    • Food and housing is way cheaper in the Philippines unless you are in BGC, Makati or Cebu. But I can find condos or home in the Philippines that are nice for $750. Newport is $4-5K and food is crazy. I can eat for the price you tip in CA. So I don’t understand

    • @@larrykarger6930 Food is really not that much cheaper unless you get used to eating the staple fish and rice 3 times a day. Many foods cost MORE here than it does in the US. Yeah rent is definitely cheaper, because most buildings are constructed out of bamboo or plywood and have no bathtubs and rarely appliances, even a proper shower is not common outside of a condo or hotel…but unless you’re eating the cheapest possible food known to man you can easily expect to pay as much or more than in the US. Personally I struggle with the low protein diets most Filipinos live on. Just one of their rice and veggie meals leaves me feeling weak and hungry for hours.

  • So funny -- I live in Japan and am also from California. In terms of medical and civil stuff like Drivers License Japan is so nice. Everytime I visit Cali I feellike its just so stressful. I miss Mexican food and outdoor activities.

You always speak slowly & clearly. love that. can’t believe how cold & deserted Newport beach looks on a Summer eve. and no high rise! however, i’m from Australia & not been there. Nice to stay with your parents, mybe nearby. wish you had made more vids of your USA trip. looking forward to when you go there with Chrissy.

  • I was involved (and am) in the Philipino community in the USA also, visited the Philippines. Love the them and the country. Now I am living half in USA and half in Portugal. When I come back from Portugal I have the apposite experience. I am stunned how much Portugal is easier and more organized than the USA in so many ways. It is hard to realize that all the hype of the US is best, is just that, a hype. Was really thinking about moving to the Philippines, but decided against it mostly for the 3 reasons/problems you mentioned in one of your more recent videos.

    • Avi, interesting perspective. care to expound on the 'hype'? Curious, because I was stationed in Japan for almost 5 years back in the '80s, my wife of 32 years is from Japan. I've experienced a bit of 'disillusionment' with America upon my return, so honestly curious about your perspective - and I know nothing about Portugal, so go easy on me.
