Shooting a Sherman tank. From the inside!

2017 ж. 6 Сәу.
144 256 Рет қаралды

Firing a easy 8 Sherman tank's 76mm gun.
In this shot we fire a 16lb steel projectile at approximately 2800fp.
We modified the firing system with a lanyard to make it easier for customers to fire it from outside the tank as that offers the best view.
The shot takes place at about the 4min mark

    • To my casual eye, it looked like they didn't develop enough pressure to fully cycle the action. There probably isn't that much reloading data for this round! and they were just erring on the side of caution.

    • Which is what Ordnance Branch wanted! IF you want burning fumes then a Firefly is a good choice. The 75 then 76 were both well behaved allowing for more,faster and often more accurate fire. Had the US built more HVAP esp early the legend of the firefly would be much less, but they didn't.

    • @@TheAngrySaxon1 They use the lanyard usually to fire the gun from an external position, the age of the guns and breech can potentially make them unstable so firing live ammunition from the inside is generally avoided.

    • I know this comment is a few years old, but a pretty tragic accident happened in I think 2018 from a restored M18 TD firing 76mm rounds and both people in the turret dying. So usually restored tank guns like this are fired externally to be safe.

    • This is a 76mm high velocity gun…

      @retardcorpsman@retardcorpsman2 жыл бұрын
    • @retardcorpsman3538 that's suggesting that the 75mm was low velocity... it wasn't, it was actually pretty well up there at over 2030 FPS (~618m/s) . The threshold for high velocity is 1550 to 3350 FPS (470 to 1020 m/s). The 76mm hit around 2600 FPS (792 m/s), about the same as the 88mm on the Tiger IIRC, it's tough to find accurate sources on the Tiger. Officially, the 75mm was a Medium velocity gun, but by modern standard, it was well within the high velocity threshold

    • S-u-r-e-n_16 late model panther was more or less the best medium of the war, but the t-34 had terrible build quality and non existent crew ergonomics. That's why there was 70,000 of them seeing as they were so easy to produce. Sherman was put together with quite a bit more care, but likewise there was only 49,000 or so of them built.

      @riogrande163@riogrande1636 жыл бұрын
    • S-u-r-e-n_16 T-34 would have suffered horribly in Africa or the South Pacific. The Sherman needed to work well everywhere from Russia to Egypt to the Philippines and it did so brilliantly. It was also easier to repair and more reliable than the T-34.
