For two games in a row, Alexander Ovechkin has been one of the worst players on the ice in the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals series. We'll talk all that and more in today's NHL hockey video!

  • This comes down to where he's at physically. If you watch his regular seasons for the past couple years, he does the exact same thing, he sunday skates around the play until there's an opening and stands still while winding up for a shot. And I personally don't think that it's a case of him "not wanting to," I genuinely think he cannot keep up playing a full 60 minutes anymore. If he's playing like Crosby and putting in speed & aggression in almost every shift, he's burning out by the 2nd.

  • Not a fan of the Ovi/Crosby comparison here for two reasons. First, Crosby is two years younger and once you pass your mid-30s, your game or your body could decline quickly at any moment. Let's see where #87 is at when he's 38 or 39. Second, Ovi has always played a much more physical game than Crosby. He's missed relatively little time during his long career and also suited up for Russia at international tournaments more frequently. That's a lot of wear and tear physically, and he might not able to give maximum effort every night anymore. Still sucks to see Ovi float around out there, but he's only human. Even the Russian machine breaks eventually.

Ovechkin has quite literally dragged the Caps on his back for the past 18 years, which is why he has more individual records AND trophies, including the Calder which Crosby will never be able to have. I don't agree with the comparison between the two as they are vastly different players, but if you wanna compare be fair and don't compare stupid stuff like number of cups. Jarome Iginla, Dale Hawerchuk and Mats Sundin are Hall of Famers who did not win a Cup. Does that mean Roy is better than any of them? Of course not. Someone who doesn't care doesn't get as excited for every teammates goal down the stretch like he was toward the end of the regular season. You could tell all season he wanted to be in this situation. The reality is that he is an old man by hockey standards, and he simply cannot be THE dude like he has been his whole career. He loses more speed every year, and now it's hindering his ability to even be a physical threat. The Rangers are shutting him down. It's really that simple. • A lot of you are seeing this wrong. Ovechkin fights hard for a lot of the game and is still passionate to win (watch him hit people next time). The issue is that towards the end of the game, the Capitals are losing by a goal. So it makes sense that they want him out there (one of the best goal scorers ever) as much as possible. So they have him not push too hard to save his energy as much as possible. Also, you see how he is winded and that’s because he puts in long shifts. The Caps hope he will get a chance at scoring. This has been talked about for years about this strategy. Probably only people that watch Capitals games a lot would learn about this.

As a rangers fan u have to respect ovechkin when he was playing in his prime, always a well rounded hockey player that wasnt afraid to throw his body around. • The complaint about him ringing it around the boards on the pp or extra man isn't really valid imo he's been doing that since he was a rookie in the league because the way the caps formation works is they load all 4 players to one side to draw players away from him to give him the looks he needs so when a puck doesn't come to him cleany his only option 99% of the time is to get around the boards to set up the cycle again because he's literally the only player on that side of the ice, unless you want him to send a risky cross seam pass through bodies and turn it over.

      @EckHockey@EckHockey11 күн бұрын
    • @@EckHockey No nobody has been able to fill that Backstrom/Kuzy hole on the power play for sure, but the main issue with the caps pp is that they've also never had a good shooting threat from the left handed one timer side either so as long as you shade Ovechkin they don't really have a dangerous scoring threat and they haven't mixed up anything for some reason this series like they would in the regular season. Since Ovechkin is slow now as well he isn't a threat to enter the zone on the PP which makes it much easier for the rangers to defend zone entries when your only option is to defend one side. Either way I'm happy the caps youth like McMichael, Protas, Feravhary, Lapierre etc all getting important playoff experience as these guys really are going to need to be the players that step up in the future to help the aging core.

  • I know this is football on a hockey channel so bear with me for a minute: Barry Sanders, arguably the greatest running back of all time, was within a year or two of breaking the all time rushing record for the NFL when he retired after playing for 10 years. He wasn't injured, nor did he have anything that would keep him from playing. Yet his star status resounds even to this day despite not holding the record when we all know he could have gotten it, barring unforeseen career ending injury. Here, Ovechikin, arguably one of the greatest players in the NHL and definitely a future Hall of Famer has held on fanatically until his game has started to show serious signs of suffering. As a result, his star image is also starting to tarnish. He's been an incredible player in the NHL and I'm thrilled for him that he got his Stanley Cup, however, this is what it looks like when you hold on for too long.

Now let’s look at Ovi. Ovechkin has 853 goals in 1426 games played.... 484 of those coming at even strength and a whopping 369 of those coming on from the power play or empty nets. (56.7% of those goals coming from even strength) So yes Ovechkin has made a career from cashing in goals when they have a man up, or when there isn’t a goalie in the net. Matthews is scoring at a higher pace, and the vast majority of those goals come from even strength which is way more impressive. And that’s just from a goal scoring aspect. Matthews is a very good two way forward that’s good defensively and responsible in his own end.. Ovi isn’t. I’m not saying Ovechkin is a bad player, I’m simply saying he’s overrated.
