  • I made this and was able to watch channels that were first broadcast back in the 1600s. Too many witchburnings for my liking, so I adjusted the length and am now able to enjoy live broadcasts of t-rexes fighting with triceratops. Total Genius.

  • Back in the late seventies and early eighties when pay channels such as HBO and Showtime were broadcast over the airwaves and descrambled at the customers house, my dad and several friends who were in the radio/television broadcasting business made directional antenna that resembled a M1919 air cooled machine gun that had discs as heat sinks on the barrel and the antenna was wired to a box that was for tuning and fine tuning a signal and depending on what one wanted to watch the antenna was pivoted to point at the area the broadcasting dish was at and just fine tune the signal until it was clear. Worked for years. I think he had that setup before he first bought a vhs player.

    • I remember those. There was a single tall antenna on top of the highest building in the center of the city. Your house receive antenna needed to be high enough for SHF highly directional line - of - sight reception. The HBO station went around in cars to find illegal antennas to sue for payment or Cease-and-Desist orders. Ham radio operators working SHF (900MHz & 1.2GHz slow scan TV) were sued & had to go to court to explain why their antennas were not receiving HBO (~4.1GHz). 🤓

The cable makes a really high-Q LC notch filter so is super important to get the measurements exact. I don't remember using components, just coax wires, but the tech is all different now. Regardless, it was real, and we were able to watch all the scrambled channels without paying (i.e. Superchannel, first choice, nudie channels etc)

  • What coax did you use? Is there a specific wattage bulb you got the capacitor from, Or well any do? How many OHMS was the capacitor? Where I live, out in the country, there is no cable and I can't afford satellite, SO, I built a fractal antenna that I put up about 30 FT in the air. Seems to work OK, but is somewhat BI-Directional. Anyway, I do get 50+ "Channels" without a booster, but I am wondering if this would do me any good?

    • Thank you, my friend, for raising this question, I used a 75 ohm coaxial cable and a 10-1000pF capacitor can be used.❤❤ Meanwhile, dipole antennas can have different functions in different places

    • @@InnovationPlusOne If you have a bulb like that and if you don't break it, taking it apart. If the bulb contains that. If you have shrink wrap tubing. If you have a soldering gun. I you have solder. If you have coax splitters and connectors. If you have a spare USB cable. Not saying what you did is false in anyway. Years ago, I bought a HDTV card for a PC and made my own antenna using plywood and coat hangers. Worked. I mounted it on a pole and stuck it in the ground. Once you have to search out and purchase some of that, it becomes uneconomical. I'm in the US. I used a RCA "HD" antenna. Plastic and was maybe $15 US. I mounted it on a camera tripod. I attached it to something called a HD Homerun made by a company called Silicondust. It lets you convert the signal and run it through your router. From there, TV, phone, tablets, PCs can pick it up via an App. I hooked up the HD Homerun to a WIFI repeater (now using a mesh cell node). I placed it upstairs in an unused bedroom. Facing a wall. I pick up over 40 HD TV signals. With a better antenna I could probably pick up another 10-15 channels. Right now, I can pick up stations up to 30 miles away. If I move the antenna I can pick up channels 60 miles away but lose a lot of the ones within 30 miles.

  • Before cable went digital, there were two ways to block a channel. Either with a negative or positive notch filter. The negative filter blocked a channel completely and would have to be removed to receive the channel. The positive filter was put in place to remove interference sent down the line from the broadcaster. This setup seems to mimic that. But I know of no place that still uses it.
