"Dog Man in the Dark" is a glow-in-the-dark reading and drawing class for elementary-aged children created by Comic Kids, a nonprofit which teaches children in vulnerable communities how to draw using comics, cartoons and books to inspire their creativity. First, the children are introduced to the book "Dog Man" by Dav Pilkey and read an excerpt of the book in an animated and theatrical way by Mr. Reed. The pages of the book are projected on the screen behind him so the children can see the illustrations and follow along. Next, Mrs. Kat teaches the children how to draw Dog Man in a step-by-step format. The children draw in pencil on a fluorescent piece of paper. Once they are done drawing in pencil, the children outline their character in a dark marker before the black lights are turned on and overhead lights are turned off. Once the room is glowing, their drawings glow too! The children are given glow sticks and highlighters to finish coloring and drawings and creating a background in a fun way. At the end of the class, the children are given their own copy of the book "Dog Man" to take home and finish reading themselves. It is a new, interactive way to make reading and learning art fun for kids!
