Gregory saved his mother with the same violence his father displayed--but now that his monstrous side has been awakened, it's up to him to get it back into the closet for now, so that it can't hurt anyone who doesn't deserve to be harmed. That part of a person should only come out when it's truly warranted--like to protect yourself and someone you love from being killed or grievously injured.
