  • Did you know the reason quasi connectivity exists on java is because notch when trying to implement pistons copied the code of a door. Basically Pistons, Dispensers and Droppers can be powerd exactly like a door.

      @wingdingdmetrius8025@wingdingdmetrius8025 Жыл бұрын
    • @@wingdingdmetrius8025 Correct, it is a bug! But even though it's unintended, and rather unintuitive, it turned out to have some very useful applications - thanks to quasi-connectivity, many machines can be built that would simply never be possible if pistons were powered the way that, say, Redstone Lamps get powered. So it was decided that it would never be fixed. That said, this is only the case in Java Edition. In the Bedrock Edition of Minecraft, basically everything was rewritten from scratch, and the developers of that version decided against deliberately re-creating the behaviour of quasi-connectivity. That, in addition to some other subtle under-the-hood changes, means that Bedrock Edition doesn't have as much potential for really fancy complicated machinery as Java Edition does.

  • 14:18 "We should have a name for this family of rules that defies your expectation of symmetry." We often call contraptions "direction-dependent" or "directional" if they defy rotation symmetries, and we call them "location-dependent" or "locational" if they defy translation symmetries. So we already have some words for contraptions defying certain expectations of symmetry.

    • mmm yah. Practically, those 2 cover most communication needs and I cant have much hope that we'll get any amore fun terms. Though there isnt a common term yet for builds that dont work if you mirror them. But builds like that which are not also directional are rare. If we kept the naming theme, such builds are "orientational" but the math books I read use the term "chiral" I think

      @whitestonejazz@whitestonejazz Жыл бұрын
    • @@whitestonejazz Chirality dosen't quite capture it, as it describes structures, that can't overlap with their mirror image. In case of our piston, mirroing it in the zx or zy plane does work though. By chirality, I'd expect the functionality not to change if the whole assembly of piston and redstone is rotaed or mirrored. To borrow a term fom music, I'd call the shown behavoirs dissonant. Maybe "absonutivity" would be a good term. I mean these things don't even have a common theme. Update preferences, for competing interactions, are completley directional (thus chiral, btw), items in a dispenser behave, like they have some kind of weight and quasi connectivity has an absolute direction (like the gravity in this world).

  • Not only do we in TMC try to understand the directionality of redstone, we often try our hardest to take directionality out of our contraptions or render it irrelevant in some way. In order to do that we use often use non directional elements of these redstone components in conjunction with update chains to ensure a devices function. Although when we refer to something as non directional we usually ignore rotations other that the 4 cardinal directions.

  • I loved the tie-in to QM! Reminds me of Noether's theorem, where any symmetry leads to a conserved quantity - and likewise, a broken symmetry seems to imply there's something that's NOT conserved (like how Dark Energy has been shown to actually violate energy conservation by breaking a symmetry). Obviously minecraft isn't known for its "conserved quantities", like flying machines very clearly break some kind of conservation law but like I wonder if we'll discover some kind of specific exploit relating to the symmetry broken by quasiconnectivity. Or not, im kinda redstone-illiterate so idk lol

    @conure512@conure512 Жыл бұрын
  • i like the word Quasitivity (quasi-relativity) for a description of minecraft's limited¹ symmetry. one of the main things that breaks the symmetry is quasiconnectivity, so i think quasi is a suitable prefix to use in this case. these are our properties: - all machines are symmetric upon translation² - some machines are symmetric upon rotation - no machine is symmetric upon being given velocity³ special relativity was created to accommodate the fact that light has a constant velocity regardless of your reference frame and that we have no "universal" reference frame, that all inertial reference frames behave exactly equally, and there is no test you can do to determine your "universal" location, velocity, direction, etc. considering we have about 1/2 of those properties present in minecraft, i think quasi-relativity is a good word to describe that, and i think Quasitivity is a catchy contraction of that word ¹ limited by directional asymmetry and inertial asymmetry ² except for a few that are based on other game mechanics, like needing to be in a fortress for a wither skeleton farm, you can't translate beyond that fortress and still have it work. ³ because minecraft has a fixed grid. you can make things that move, like flying machines, but those are part of the machine. you can't set a static component in motion and have it move, or push a flying machine sideways and have it drift diagonally while flying forward.

  • This video blew my mind. In physics we have various names for direction dependent interactions or structures. For this case I like to think that direct redstone connection is spatially isotropic and quasiconnectivity is spatially anisotropic. Also this video makes me think what happens if you have a direct connection and turn it into a quasi connection automatically, and if that can be studied by spontaneous symmetry breaking. Great video, keep it up!

  • Just as important in physics as the symmetries that hold are the symmetries that are broken, and when. Both the symmetries demonstrated in this video are actually broken under specific circumstances in our universe. The mirroring (or parity inversion) changes the results of anything involving the weak nuclear force (including things like radioactive decay) because the weak nuclear force only interacts with particles that have left handed chirality. This only affects quantum physics though. General relativity itself doesn't enforce time translational symmetry. The behaviour of the universe is different now than it was 13 billion years ago. This has some weird effects, like energy not being conserved. A comprehensive study of the symmetries Minecraft physics has, when they're violated, and the effects these violations have could give some really valuable insight into how to break the game. I know of some cases where it already has, but there is surely more to discover.

  • Great video, but When you want to prevent piston reextending you don’t really need a qc, just having 2 blocks in front of sticky pistons is enough. Also when you work with vertical wires it’s nice to use sand for delay.

    @Desu_Desu@Desu_Desu Жыл бұрын
    • Turns out the vertical extension doesn't work in some orientations with only 2 blocks in front of the sticky piston (say slime and glass). The piston is apparently needed. Is this related to the fact that a BUDed sticky piston needs 2 blocks in front to stop bouncing endlessly?

      @whitestonejazz@whitestonejazz Жыл бұрын
    • @@whitestonejazz yes, this is the same mechanic. In your case it’s probably because observer updates sticky, so you get a race condition, that’s why it’s directional Try moving observers 1 block down, for example, should work

  • The tie in with physics was cool. Reminds me of the leibniz-clarke correspondence in which Leibniz uses the principle of sufficient reason & his law of the identity of indiscernibles to argue against the newtonian absolute view of the reality of space (& time) in itself. A lot of it is how it would necessitate inexplicable design choices like what you get with the position dependent mechanics in Minecraft. Was kinda hoping to find a name in there to categorize those minecraft mechanics but i couldn't find anything nicer than absotivity tbh. Maybe "placetivity" or "localitivity" could work though since that's really what's going on, place or space or position in minecraft has properties to it which exist independent from the properties or mechanics of the things in it.
