Bjorn Borg basically retired in 1981, in 1983 he retired from tennis. After 1981 he never played another grand slam , because of the Atp didnt allow him to play in the grand slams. The main reason why was he took time off and lost his ranking. In those days there were no wildcards , and wouldnt allow him to play in the grand slams unless he played in the qualifying tournaments. Borg was not going to play qualifying rounds to play in a grand slam, and the Atp would grant him any special favors, it was a loss for tennis.

I went to a lot of the "early" seniors tour events it was fun. People talk about the '84 McEnroe of course but to me I prefer the wood racket era Mac because of the extra body english he had to use given the frame. To me, this was the apex of the sport of tennis: McEnroe v Borg. Contrasting styles and contrasting personalities, but mutual respect. They ended up 7-7 in their careers, but that statistic is somewhat misleading. None of their matches were on clay, Borg's best surface. McEnroe wasn't particularly competitive on clay. He didn't need to be, but it does in my opinion indicate that Borg was the more complete player.

It's hard to believe someone like Borg would retire from pro tennis at age 25, but he did. Now that I thought of it, it must be hugely tempting, you've already earned a bunch of millions, you're young , why not release yourself from the stress, the pressure and the hard work of being a pro athlete and just go enjoy your millions while you're young? It seems like a pretty decent idea, however, very very few have in fact done it.
