‘Absolutely excruciating’ - does Britain's dental industry need a complete overhaul?

We have never been known for our perfect teeth in this country - in fact, there used to be a TV programme called Britain's Worst Teeth.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
But now some people have to travel hundreds of miles for dental treatment - others resort to DIY treatment, pulling out their own teeth.
A damning report by the Health and Social Care Committee says it's becoming so hard for people to get access to the dental services they need, that the entire industry needs a complete overhaul - and fast.

There must be an abundance of practices offering NHS treatment. But then am I missing something? I live in Norfolk, maybe it is just Norfolk where NHS dentists have dried up since Covid.

I got some antibiotics via an emergency appointment with a NHS dentist. He gave me antibiotics for infection but refused remove the teeth once the infection had cleared up. They want us all to pay privately. If you can't afford it, tough luck. That is what this country has come to. If I were younger and in better health I would emmigrate. • There is no mystery: if dentists treat patients on the NHS, they lose money because the state funding package does not cover their costs. Moreover, the NHS funded materials they would have to use are substandard and dentists hate using them, knowing that they will probably cause problems for the patients at some point. I had two excellent dentists over the decades who just stopped doing NHS work for these reasons. Both my partner and I have had to resort to private dentistry for ages now (and we live in London). Knowing that gum disease can lead to heart disease, this is a shockingly short-sighted attitude by the Government.

If a dentist has to perform multiple fillings, they get paid for 1 band 2 treatment, eg, they get the same pay for 1 extraction or filling as for 10 in one go. I eventually found a dentist who would take an NHS patient, 2 extractions and 2 fillings, it took 4 appointments, not efficient and not the best quality of care whn you have to keep waiting a week for each step, but I can't blame the dentist as she would essentially be paying for part of my treatment herself if se done them all in one appointment! This surely prolongs any backlog too!

    • @@joecater894dentists like any members of other professions want to be paid adequately. Dentistry is stressful, entrails long hours and requires constant updating. Modern dentistry is expensive because equipment, staff and indemnity cost a small fortune. It will take 30 minutes to even place a small filling but doing it to a high standard. Why would a dentist want to do that for an average wage? NHS dentistry is light years behind. It would simply cost the NHS too much to properly fund modern treatment. That is why general healthcare is prioritised and dentistry is forgotten.

But the amount being charged is frankly unsustainable.. like i say , health of nation.. ways and means must be found to get the price down to an affordable level. I'm not against someone making money.. people should be able to make good money. But the problem is still... UK needs affordable dentistry by whatever means.. In poland for example.. all procedures are a fraction of the cost of the UK. They are obviously using the same energy and materials.. yet there is a dramatic difference in cost going on..

  • I live in Yorkshire and you CANNOT get an NHS dentist. The waiting list is about 8-10 years. Even if you put yourself on that list there is no guarantee that you will actually get seen. You can get to see a dentist if you use the emergency number but they will send you miles away. The dentist will also rush you and only do basic work because the money simply isn't there. I went with BUPA one time and had to pay an amazing amount of money to get work done. All the guy did was reglue a post/crown thing (False tooth on a spike). Not even 10 mins work, £450. Hospitals should also have a dental unit on the grounds and it should be set up to do ALL basic work. Nothing special... Fillings, extractions and emergency work (From an accident or whatever) only. That unit should be open to ANYONE that turns up. First come, first served. I wouldn't mind if they charged NHS prices. I would pay that! This would free up local dentists to be able to do regular check-ups because people will be able to pay for those. I wonder if it would be possible for the NHS to train up dentists for a set fee (Or free?) BUT.... All trainee dentists HAVE to sign a contract to stay inside the NHS and do ONLY NHS work for X amount of time. (5 years maybe?) and be paid a reasonable amount of money by the NHS while doing it. They would then be placed in certain clinics/hospitals all around the country and would do local NHS work ONLY. This is not an unreasonable contract because lots of industries use this method to pay for apprenticeships. Why can the medical field not do it?

Earlier this year I had to pay over £500 for my daughter to have a tooth extracted at a private dentist, money I can ill afford. She was in a lot of pain. • I've just spent about £500 for clean and 2 fillings because there's no NHS dentists. I want a refund on my tax

  • Never seems to be a shortage of Porsches in dentist car parks, it’s not the patients driving them either.

  • I understand what is financial pressure, but it is not comparable with the ingoing tooth ache, that makes a person on low income miss days at work. On my visits to NHS dentists I had my teeth deliberately treated incorrectly so I was in pain after that, my teeth would deteriorate as a result of such treatment or I would loose my teeth. Inexcusable!!!!!!!!!!
