Though the engines were immediately thrown into reverse and the rudder turned hard left, slowing and turning took an incredible distance because of the tremendous weight (or mass) of the ship. The collision produced a series of thin gashes as well as brittle fracturing and separation of seams in the adjacent hull plates, thus allowing water to flood into the Titanic2. The vessel hit the iceberg and the hull broke loose before the stern split. The ship only took five minutes to sink 3. It is also believed that the Titanic was sailing too fast at the time of the accident, which many historians believe was too fast given the knowledge of icebergs in the area pls like my fingers hurt
