Top 10 | Beautiful and Expensive Imperial Egg of Russia from the House of Faberge

2020 ж. 14 Мам.
900 471 Рет қаралды

In 2010, an American scrap-metal dealer visited an antique stall somewhere in the United States and purchased a golden egg sitting on a three-legged stand. The egg was adorned with diamonds and sapphires, and it opened to reveal a clock. Intending to sell the object to a buyer who would melt it down for its component metals, the dealer purchased this egg-clock for $13,302. He then had trouble selling it, as potential buyers deemed it overpriced.
The dealer had valued it incorrectly-but not the way he originally thought. In 2014, the man-who remains anonymous-discovered that his little golden objet d’art was one of the 50 exquisitely bespoke Fabergé Easter eggs created for imperial Russia’s royal Romanov family. Its value? An estimated $33 million.
The Romanovs’ extravagant royal Easter egg tradition began with Czar Alexander III in 1885. Alexander was then in the fifth year of his reign, having succeeded his father, Alexander II, who had been killed by bomb-wielding assassins. In 1885, Alexander sought an Easter gift to surprise and delight his wife Maria Feodorovna, who had spent her early years as a Danish princess before leaving Copenhagen to marry him and become a Russian empress. He turned to Peter Carl Fabergé, a master goldsmith who had taken over his father’s House of Fabergé jewelry business in 1882.

  • One day on a whim, I popped into a museum in San Francisco. To my shock and surprise a Faberge collection was being displayed. To actually see them in person. I'll never forget the feeling of my breath catching in my throat and suddenly being covered in goosebumps at first sight. An experience of a lifetime. No photo or video could ever do justice to their beauty.

  • Few people would say these objects are not that special, they can be replicated at any time using modern techniques. True it can and they can mass produce it actually. But what makes these objects special is not the materials that make them, it is the skill and the craftsmanship with great detailing without using the modern computers of today and providence. An example is the rock crystal, it takes years just to perfect it, a simple crack on the crystal means they have to discard it and start all over again until they get that perfect egg size transparent crystal. during that time, it takes months to years just to finish that clear rock crystal to produce. So yeah, try replicating it today! if you have enough patience, time, effort, and craftsmanship.

    • That's what I admire the most about these eggs is the fine craftsmanship that goes into designing and creating such spectacul specimens. I weep for the talents that have faded throughout the ages. We travel the world to view such creations both large and small but don't think to carry these crafts on. I believe the arts to be of great importance and something we don't want to ever loose the ability to create. It seems that no-one wants to put in the time, effort nor have the patience or the skills to craft wonders such as these. How right you are.

  • Thank you for posting this, I never grow tired of seeing these amazing works of art. My sister always knew where to find me at the NOMA. She literally would spend the entire day roaming the museum only to step into the Faberge Room to find me still standing transfixed in front of the faberge pieces. I simply walked from one display case to the next and lost myself in the sight. It has been years since I visited. I have not been back since hurricane Katrina. The wonderful part of my visits was that a great deal of the time I was completely alone in the room with the collection and was able to view them in total uninterrupted silence. It was absolute bliss.

And the stories that go along with each egg are amazing. I want them all at the same time I want them all back in Russia where they belong, with the Tzar's family of course. Then I could criticize their wealth, I can't do that now. Thank you Andrew, so fabulous I shared it on twitter.

    • If only the missing were found and then the entire collection was together again! But as long as they are passed from billionaire to billionaire without ever offering them to the Russians to purchase, this will never happen. As stunning as these beauties are and making such perfect gifts, the Romanovs had to know of the starving people all around them and how inappropriate these extravaganzas were. I do wish they had just exiled the family instead of the terrible end they all endured.

  • Several decades ago, some of the Faberge eggs were on display in an art museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. One (or maybe two?) was stolen, and the case remained unsolved. I don’t recall the circumstances, but the thief was finally caught, after driving around for months (years?) with the hot merchandise wrapped in oily rags in the trunk of his car. The item was recovered. As a further note, wasn’t there supposed to be a large diamond hung from the interior roof of the Coronation Egg?

  • Awesome presentation! I've seen the Faberge collection twice, once in Munich, Germany and again in Richmond, Virginia. The collection in Munich included Jewelry, utensils, dining supplies etc. It was amazing! The show in Virginia was only the eggs. Both were Beautiful! I knew a lot about Faberge before these times as I was teaching egg decorating classes at the time, and made it a part of my class. Love this video!😻

Start in Richmond, VA at the Virginia Museum (they have FIVE!) and end at Hillwood Estate in Washington, DC. It was the home of Marjorie Merriweather Post, who picked up a couple, along with other fabulous works onf art from Russia's Golden Era when her husband was the US Ambassador to the Soviet Union. You will never regret it- they are far more impressive in person!

  • I absolutely love Faberge eggs. Wish I could afford even the reproductions. For a while when I was working, I splurged on Joan River's eggs. I have 4 of them that I put aside for "one of these days", and I would put them out now, but I don't really trust the new neighborhood I had to move into when my husband died, and I had to sell our house. Some dodgy people moved next door and and we can't put out our best on display, so my reproduction Faberge eggs are put away in storage. I wish I could have all the eggs. They are so beautiful.

    • good pick, the mosiac egg is made of platinum that is hand cut to create a mesh, then all the gems are put on the mesh. It is an amazing creation, even in todays standard, to create a mesh out of platinum in perfect square.

  • I had the rare chance to view some Faberge cigarette cases, that were found in a shoe box in the bottom of a closet. Lets just say that the family who owned them had a life changing experience when they were subsequently sold at Sotheby's in the late 90's. It was my only chance to see something so rare and exquisite up close. One of the cases I remember very well. I was a deep Jade and covered in diamonds. Another was machined blue enamel and studded with Diamonds and Emeralds. I don't remember the other two (insert sad face here).

    @starquant@starquant Жыл бұрын
    • Do you remember how much it was sold for?

      @AS-ri1mb@AS-ri1mb Жыл бұрын
    • @@AS-ri1mb Yes I do. They sold around 70K to 120K each and the Albert Einstein letters (Her father in law was an intellectual and great friend of Einstein's) sold for around 34K. They actually flew a guy out from Sotheby's all the way to New Zealand to come and collect the cigarette cases and the letters (I wasn't shown the letters). It was a small town in New Zealand and everything was kept very quiet at the time, they were quite poor and couldn't even lock their back door properly. They basically ended up with around 400K all up, if I remember correctly. Everything in the shoebox was from a deceased estate and I remember it was mailed to her husband from Germany. Apparently when he saw the shoebox, was disgusted at his meager inheritance and didn't even bother to look in it, subsequently putting it in the bottom of the wardrobe. It was eventually opened about 15 years later.
