My grandpa (Italian) used to tell me stories about the war, he told me that all the Axis Powers were involved in Operation Barbarossa. The rapid modernization and industrialization through WW2 is crazy and very hard to wrap my head around. At the beginning of the war, armies consisted of WW1 and even Prussian era technology (especially france) and towards the end, you can see technologies common even in the 70’s. 🤯
It’s really interesting. Leon Trotsky said ‘war is the locomotive for change’ and I think that is a really profound sentiment. Wars changed not only technology, but social structures and political structures. It’s just sad that it has to be at the expense of so many lives.
@@Zhipaipai When united, societies can accomplish an extreme amount. But war is one of the few things that can force us to unite, which speaks to the failures of humanity.

My great grandfather was a bomber pilot, shot down during the invasion of France, he survived and was captured by the Germans. Sent to a Stelag and lived through the ordeal, he never talked about the war or his experiences directly, but he was writing a book before he died about his entire life and the lives of his comrades. I got to read his first draft of the book about 5 months before he passed. It’s unfathomable the things that happened to him, and the things he witnessed. Every time I ever hear anything about ww2 I think of brave, strong individuals like him who gave all of us our freedom all across the world.

It’s been almost 6 years since this video, but I just want to congratulate Oversimplified on the insane quality of his videos. While he definitely does what he sets out to do (very oversimplifies the topics), it is still clear to me that he is very knowledgeable on what he talks about. In the past few years I’ve started reading a lot more than I used to, and I just discovered from my current book that the whole “Japan doesn’t want to miss the victory bus” was an actual slogan adopted by Japanese commanders after Hitler’s victories in Europe. Just prior to his conquering of France, Japanese high command was seriously considering diminishing their presence in china, but German victory completely changed their mindset, leading to their eventual offensives. A small detail that I always remembered from this video, so it’s very cool to me that you based it off of something very real, and goes to show how knowledgeable you really are Oversimplified. Keep up the good work!
where did u find that slogan? cant find it
I like listening to other people's story about how their grandparents lived and also fought during the war. My grandparents have long been dead before I was even born. I would have really loved to hear their stories. Although my grandpa probably didn't fight because he wasn't a soldier. I still would have loved to hear their story about how life was under Dutch and Japanese occupation.
My great grandfather fought in the pacific but he didnt talk about it. That how i knew he fought.
I doubt you would. The Japanese were inhumane towards the occupied territories. Their crimes are not talked enough and they keep teaching their children lies about what they did in the war. The Emperor's family still rules with the same powers and their high ranking officials were never punished for their atrocities. All USA/UK's fault who only cared about holding back the Soviets in East Asia.
Both of my great-grandfathers fought in the war but also passed before I was born.
I'm Romanian. We (were forced to) enter the war in German's side: my grandpa's older brother fought on the Eastern front. Before reaching Stalingrad, he was shot in the leg and had to recover in hospital. Extremely lucky for him. Most of his friends died during the battle of Stalingrad. In 1944, as the Russians pushed back the front, our military dictatorship collapsed and Ro had to change sides (in the meantime we were bombed by both sides for a while). Now my grandpa came of age. He fought on the Allied side through Hungary an well into Czechoslovakia. Then Ro troups were sent home without being recognized for their change of heart. All in all, both grandpa and his older brother survived after having fought on completely different fronts and sides. (uncle +1989, grandpa+ 2004). I loved my grandpa's war stories (always avoided telling me the gruesome stuff only a few funny bits). My lifelong regret is not asking him more... Bless him.

Greece was the only country to fight 4 army’s at once and also gave the allies their first major victory, also the resistance in Greece saved Russia by pushing back operation Barbarossa for months by holding German troops in Greece which was crucial
1. The USSR fought with 5 armies (Germany, Italy, Hungary, Romania and Finland) 2. Greece resisted for a long time only because at first it was opposed by an Italian army that was weak relative to the Wehrmacht, but upon the arrival of German troops, despite the mobilization that the blitzkrieg was trying to limit, it was still captured. 3. Greece was helped by Great Britain and its dominions. 4. Two months clearly saved the USSR from defeat in an officially undeclared war, because during this time Germany could have been better prepared for it. 5. To put on a par the resistance of the USSR with 26.6 million victims and the resistance of Greece with 435 thousand victims and write that the USSR won only thanks to Greece is clearly adequate and fair. 👍

WHY WAS THIS SO EMOTIONAL AND FUNNY AT THE SAME TIME
That's one of the better ad reads I've seen 😂... Awesome
Seeing visual representation of how much land this war covered is crazy to me and helps me better understand the term world war.
would have been usefull in highschool, i redid the history/geo class because i wasn't focused and all, now i watch and learn for fun, cause this is fun, not being forced into knowledge, but dancing with it.. have a nice day!
But more interestingly one nation was fighting simultaneously on all of the continentals : the Germans . Really incredible. There is not any other example of such a crazy attempt. Fighting both in Africa, Russia, ,Europe...
Also kind of crazy how the entire earth was about 5 countries fighting each other. The rest were just being shoved guns and ordered to fight.
Whats crazy to me about WW2 is that all this destruction and Death happened in just 6 Years. Its impressive how far the Germans got so quickly and how fast it all went downhill.
One of the funniest pieces of information about the war is learning that several South American nations declared war on Germany in the final months of the war, like Ecuador and Paraguay which only got involved in February of 1945. Like, great job you guys, you participated too I guess.

@@goodlovely8513 im not lol
That is what the US troops sent back to the Germans LOL
The mistake of the germans was to give them the chance to surrender.
Imagine being a German solider at the time, and receiving a letter, opening it, and it says nuts.

Amazing video, only thing I’d mention that Navajo Code Talkers were integral to the allies’ successes in the pacific. 🤙🏽
"I can take Greece." -Someone who couldn't take Greece
Honestly 😂👏🏻

lol, but to be fair Greece is just a huge mountain range. It's hard to conquer.

Switzerland in 1945: „Wait! There was a war?“
Oh look gold stash. This country might need it later.
Y’all hear sumn?
SCP-173 Switzerland’s rails and roads are filled with mines
SACREDIONGAMING YT He was jokin...
Switzerland has really bad terrain with mountains and hills and it's quite small so Hitler didn't want to put a lot of effort into invading a small piece of land
Honestly, Australia in that tiny spot holding up, whilst everyone else was defeated in egypt is pretty badass. That's some aussie power right there.
He helped me pass my history class and I can’t thank him enough for that 🙏
Nice
My great grandmother was killed in the Blitzkrieg. As a result, when my grandfather turned 18, his father gave him enough resources to flee occupied France (he proceeded to Italy where he met and married my grandma and eventually found their way to the US). My great grandpa, who stayed behind in France, then proceeded to fight with the resistance against the Nazis(at this point in time, he was around forty years old). I got to meet him when I was two during my first trip to France- he gave me the then disabled Thompson SMG he used as a freedom fighter and an Iron Cross which he'd taken off the chest of a Sturmbannführer (an SS Major) who he said he'd shot dead during the Liberation of Paris. Of course, younger me thought all of these were toys 'till I turned 15 and began taken real good care of them. I wish I got to spend more time with him, he'd definitely be the most badass person I've known. May God rest his soul in peace.
Truly amazing that your great grandpa fought for freedom in WW2.
Cool
That’s an amazing story, your Great Grandpa sounds like a legend.
pog
What was your grand parents names
My favourite part was 30 years after the war, a Japanese soldier was found in the forest killing people, not knowing the ASR’s was over. When the villagers asked him to stop, he said he wouldn’t stop unless him superior came to personally dismiss him. So the villagers found the captain, who was now a bookstore owner and he came over to personally dismiss him.
30 years 👽. Was bro living under a rock
@@madiha_tanveer273 he was living in the forest, so maybe.
Hiroo Onoda?
It was actually a small unit, some died, some left because they believed the war was over, and the last one is the one who caused most of the trouble
@@madiha_tanveer273 on a remote island with no cellphones, and a radio from 1940 if he was lucky.... So yeah pretty much under a rock

My grandfather was a Polish soldier. He was captured and sent to fight for Germany when he didn't want to. His 4 older brothers died in the war and he was the only surviving child from my great grandparents. He was brought to America after the war was older and is now 96.
❤
that's neat
Similar story. My great grandpa was a Soviet soldier, his 3 brothers died, and he was the only survivor... Sometimes I think of how many relatives people could have now if this war never happened
This reminds me of Saving Private Ryan when the Czech soldiers are surrendering saying they weren't German but Czech & forced to fight & they were shot anyway cuz they didn't understand what they were saying 😭 your gramps is lucky to be alive.
My grandfather was 5 years old 😂
🇩🇪Hitler: Okay Hirohito, I've invaded Russia and it's going pretty well. Have you finished China? 🇯🇵Hirohito: no but I attacked the United States 🇩🇪Hitler: *Y O U W H A T*
Cmon, everyone knows that PerlHarbor was a fake attack made my US
🇩🇪Hitler:Okay Mussolini, I'm about to prepare the USSR and destroy them!BTW howser that Greek war going? 🇮🇹Mussolini:I'm losing... *🇩🇪Hitler:YOURE WHAT!?!*
Pearl harbour was Hitler’s idea. He believed that the US was gonna join the war one way or the other therefore he wanted japan to take a preemptive strike against them
