Has Coyote Peterson KILLED This Centipede?

2024 ж. 20 Мам.
17 203 Рет қаралды

Brave Wilderness recently posted a video featuring two centipedes: Scolopendra dehaani and the undescribed Scolopendra sp. "white leg" (mislabelled as S. gigantea in the episode). And the latter of the two centipedes appeared to be in very poor health, which is what I'll be discussing in this video.

  • I haven't watched Peterson in years due to how he treats these animals but holy fuck I didn't realize he got this bad. That poor creature didn't deserve that. If they're gonna exploit these animals for their own fame and satisfaction, the least they can do is look after them properly. I only wish I could boycott them more than I already am.

Appreciate the analysis by an expert, I think you're right on the money on your diagnosis. I used to watch coyote years ago, but it always felt like he was sacraficing a more educational approach for videos that will get more clicks by the alogorithim. Don't think he should get "cancelled" over this, as I agree the husbandry likely was not his responsibility, but he needs to take this as a learning lesson. You can't bullshit all the scientists and nerds on the internet, he'll need to do better. If I see another example of mistreatment to wildlife, and in particular arthropods, then he's done in my eyes. In each upload of yours from newest to latest you can clearly see it's slow decline in health to the braindead creature it is today. Could it be going into a molt? Yes, absolutely. Is that why it's so...zombie like? No sir that would be micosis, I doubt your centipede will even have the ability to molt in its current state. The only way you can prove us wrong is upload a video of it with it's molt before it eats it. Atleast that would change my mind hopefully. • I've had many giant speicies and a few that I tried to rescue from pet wholesalers, that they gave to me because they came in looking like that one, usually only survived a few days to a couple of weeks after bringing them home. Once the antennae started to look like that, and they couldn't even crawl on something usually easy for them to hold onto like human skin unless they were directly on top of it and level, it was pretty much over for them. You shouldn't have to be a safety spotter for a centipede because it might fall by accident. You should only have to be ready to catch it if it jumps or rapidly drops off on purpose.

The one you are describing looks like it has been kept in a wet box like cheap lizard food and ignored for the 2 months between video filming, there doesnt appear to be any legislation about how insects and other invertebrates are kept...nothing actionable that I have come across. I don't generally watch Coyote Peterson having a very low opinion of him that is unrepeatable here. I feel very sorry for the centipede , big guys like this generally make very interactive pets because theyre not simply going through the motions like many mini species, these guys actually think and learn, confirmed by the fact that they can learn who is and isn't a threat and the difference between their keeper and anyone else. • “Exotic pets” are extremely diverse, and you can’t tar the ethics of keeping them with one brush. Some exotics, like primates, are quite frankly something that shouldn’t be kept as a pet, period. While many invert pets are far safer and more ethical than most if not all more “conventional” pets. Many of the more popular pet inverts like tarantulas, scorpions and centipedes do very well in captivity and exhibit all of their natural behaviours. Their basic needs are incomparably easier to meet than those of a dog/cat, and they are on the whole, much more ethical. There’s no environmental issues (cats are a major concern here in Australia), they aren’t riddled with genetic problems from decades of inbreeding, they don’t require enrichment, and won’t keep your neighbours up at night with their incessant yapping.

I understand why reacting to stupid content is tiresome in the long term, but please keep this content going from time to time at least. Sadly ignorance on those animals still remains and my perception is that it is somewhat increasing. Also mycosis in centipedes is a terrifying disease once I learned about it. How can something survive without a functioning head for so long? Coyote Peterson seems to dial up shock value over time. • @@JapaAppa Like them or not, wasps and ants are integral parts of nearly every terrestrial ecosystem. Meanwhile bees (well, western honeybees anyway) are an invasive species that competes with and displaces native pollinators while being relatively poor pollinators themselves, spreads non-native plants, and diverts the public’s attention from insects that are genuinely threatened.

    • @@BugsandBiology wasps are directly from the deepest pit of hell and their only purpose is to inflict pain and suffering on innocent humans. If they were more docile like bees I’d give them a pass. But if we play pretend and remove the the fact that they benefit the environment by pollination blah blah, then what other benefit do they provide to humanity? Is there a resource we can extract from them? Are they friendly? You can take the W on this, I’ll give it to you because I’m just admittedly biased and I hate bugs and wish they didn’t exist. I legit cannot walk through my front door in the summer for fear of being assaulted by a hornet. Anything that makes me feel unsafe in my own space has to go.
