(LINKS BELOW): We’ve got new USB standards and SSD drives coming out. I thought I’d test them to see how fast they are in practice on my machines. I’ll show the fastest speeds I’m able to attain with a variety of drives including Samsung’s new T9 SSD as well as how to test a hard drive’s speed on your own system.

  • I used that Black Magic app recently and it blew me away: a simple usb-c cable change changed my upload speeds from my X2D to my Mac from 43 mb/s to 662 !! seriously I had no idea I had the wrong USB-C cable . Greta to see you showing this. Great job!

  • Having just gone mirrorless a few weeks ago with the Z8, I'm so happy to find this channel! And how timely? I just got my first T7 Shield yesterday after reaching the same conclusion about the T9-that my 2020 M1 MacBook Air would not be able to take advantage of the faster throughput. I had actually run a Blackmagic test on my T7 Shield drive prior to seeing this video and watching it I was inspired to run tests on my other external SSD drives. All from Samsung and approximate speeds on the M1 MacBook Air: T5 (500GB): Write 350 MB/s and Read 350 MB/s T7 (1 TB): Write 650 MB/s and Read 690 MB/s T7 Shield (1TB): Write 790 MB/s and Read 790 MB/s I was surprised that the T7 Shield was a bit faster than the T7 from last year. I'm looking to add more T7 shields to the collection because there is a great price on them which should only keep decreasing and they're fast. T7's look like a great value for as long as they're still around.

  • I went through this entire scenario with the hard drives earlier this year and learned all about the 3.2 2x2 deal. So, my next desktop will have that USB input, but they are hard to find. The motherboard is key, and whatever you buy, make sure it has 3.2 2x2 usb input on the back or on the front.!

    • It's a little snuggie for the ssd with my lightroom catalog that sticks with a reusable 3m sticky backer. :) www.amazon.com/dp/B0B2R8CPWH/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_apa_gl_i_4EBBHBB3SGMJ9XHJ6D01?linkCode=ml2&tag=hudshenrpho09-20

  • My comment appears to have been removed, not sure why. Will repeat a short version, if anyone wants more details feel free to ping. tl;dr - If you want external ssd speeds of 2.8 GB/sec read or write for modest prices, probably best to take an ordinary m.2 ssd and put it in a suitable tb3/usb4 enclosure. Have done that for a couple of years in very mobile situations, works great. Happy to share specifics with anyone who is interested in doing this for themselves.

    • Yeah, OWC makes nice enclosures for that. Not as burley or simple as the T7, but much, much faster on Macs if you use a true thunderbolt enclosure. The macs just don't take full advantage of the fast USB ssd drives.

    • Have not tried the OWC, thx. I hear you on the simplicity, but transfer times were the main incentive to go faster ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . As it turns out with usb4 things change quite a bit, since it is (for these purposes) essentially interchangeable with tb3/4. What the Macs skipped was the 2x2 mode of usb 3.2gen2, which has mostly been supported by some drive manufacturers, some PCs, no Macs. This is effectively a dead end as a result. So for most folks (pc or Mac) seems best to either stick with usb 3.2 gen2 (roughly 1 GB/s), or skip right to usb4 tb 3/4 (2.5 - 3 GB/s). Updating my own drives this weekend as a result of this discussion, will share results with details when ready. NB 1- format of the ssd matters. ExFAT can be used on both windows and macs, but is slower than apfs for macs and often slower than ntfs on pcs. NB 2 - cables matter. For usb4 / tb3 / tb4 have had best results with cables that explicitly declare support for 40 Gb/s.

    • I have two OWC's (3rd on the way) - first the Envoy Express that Hudson talked about in roughly 2022? This was very helpful. I purchased an OWC SFX enclosure (TB4) and I have a Samsung 980 Pro (PCIe 4.0) and it does well on the Mac Studio. It's 2300-2500 MBps - which is great. Good point made by boblozano about format - I'm using ExFat which I don't need to anymore - but I"m going to reformat it and try it again for kicks. Lasly, OWC has a USB4 enclosure just released that they have tested (on a Mac) at 3000 MBps - $119 I believe. I'm not buying one (also would need to procure another NVMe SSD drive - so maybe in the future). The OWC SFX is on sale right now - I think I got it for $77 a few days ago but is $95 vs $142 on the OWC website. (Enclosure ONLY - no drive included). Fun stuff.
