Toyota C-HR Hybrid Brings Style But Sacrifices Practicality
The Toyota C-HR is an eye-catching compact crossover that injects some much-needed style into Toyota's lineup. With its aggressive exterior design, the C-HR looks like it was plucked straight from a concept car show. However, as is often the case with fashion-forward vehicles, form takes priority over function.
Powering the C-HR is Toyota's latest hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors. Total system output is a modest 140 horsepower routed through a continuously variable transmission. While far from quick, the C-HR scoots around town effortlessly thanks to the electric assist at lower speeds. Freeway merges require a heavy right foot, accompanied by lots of droning engine noise as the CVT keeps the revs high.
Despite the racket under acceleration, the C-HR delivers impressive fuel economy. EPA rates the hybrid at 53 mpg city and 52 mpg highway. In our testing, we averaged an excellent 49 mpg in mixed driving. For those seeking maximum efficiency, Toyota also offers a plug-in hybrid C-HR promising 40 miles of electric-only range.
Where the C-HR falls short is interior packaging and cargo space. Up front, the cabin has an upscale vibe with premium soft-touch materials and a stylishly curved dashboard. The back seat, however, feels like an afterthought with hard plastics and tight quarters. Legroom is also fairly limited for taller occupants.
Cargo space behind the rear seats measures just 19.1 cubic feet, far less than many subcompact crossovers offer. The sloping roofline also impedes visibility and makes loading bulky items a chore. For maximizing utility, you're better off with Toyota's own RAV4 or just about any other mainstream compact crossover.
Still, the C-HR's daring appearance allows it to shine in the often bland crossover segment. Bold exterior styling, a premium cabin up front, and outstanding fuel efficiency make the C-HR an interesting alternative for urban individualists who can overlook its practical shortcomings. Those simply seeking maximum versatility would be better served elsewhere.
