    • His logic is horribly flawed but he's not a psychopath. He's not doing it out of spite or vengeance or because he has a murder boner. He's doing it because he thinks he's helping and he thinks he's right. That's why he's a good villain. His conclusions are flawed but we can understand him and his motivations. So ofc he's polite he doesn't see them as antagonists just that they're wrong and he's right.

  • One of my favorite scenes in the MCU. It adds a level of nuance to Thanos as a character. There's a clear rhyme and reason for what he is doing. Who wouldn't be motivated after seeing the home you grew up in destroyed. I'm sure he saw some family and friends suffer and die. Yes, erasing half of life will end the lives of trillions, but his goal is to end suffering, to stop extinction. No pain, no starvation, you just fade away. Still cold, but you see his motivation.

He could have attacked strange and caught him off guard or teleported away but he truly wanted him to understand by showing him with the reality stone. He specifically used his other hand to snap while explaining his plan as well. Kind of interesting how Ultron used a similar hand gesture while explaining his plan to catch Tony off guard, goes to show Thanos was a different kind of threat, not entirely evil, which I think made him much more dangerous.

  • I think a lot of people missed underlying theme of "will" and how it shifted between Infinity War and Endgame: If Loki had allowed Thor to die, Thanos wouldn't have gotten the space stone. Quill was actually willing to sacrifice Gamora, which is precisely why Thanos said that he liked Quill. If Gamora had allowed Nebula to die, Thanos wouldn't have gotten the location of the soul stone. If Strange had allowed the Avengers to destroy the time stone, Thanos would've never obtained it. If Wanda had allowed the Threshers to kill Natasha, Okoye, and Wakandan soldiers, then Shuri would've been protected against Corvus Glaive and been able to remove the mind stone from Vision (enabling it to be destroyed before Thanos could arrive and reverse its destruction via the time stone; he can't reverse its destruction if he didn't know where it was destroyed). Infinity War-Thanos' will was stronger than the Avengers because he was willing to sacrifice anything and everything in order to win, and his sacrifices strengthened his resolve, but the Avengers weren't willing to make such sacrifices (see above for multiple examples). Endgame-Thanos hadn't sacrificed anything at all (which meant less resolve), he had assumed his victory was inevitable because IW-Thanos had succeeded, but as a result his will wasn't as strong as the Avengers, whom after losing so terribly in IW were now willing to win at whatever the cost.

  • Thanos really is a great villain. He already lacked empathy by thinking that mass genocide was a solution worth considering on Titan, even if it would’ve temporarily saved his race. He’s a logical thinker, and believes that any sacrifice is necessary for the greater good, not unlike a traditional hero. The main issue is, he’s ~1,500 years old, and he’s spent the majority of that time chasing the stones and “saving” planets one by one manually. He views himself as a messiah on a holy quest, and his fanatical followers believe it to. He says it himself, that he has the “will” to act on his goals. With his age, no one can challenge or come close to changing his perspective because he’ll consider them “too young” to understand his views. He doesn’t want to kill the Avengers, he simply looks at them as misguided children getting in the way of his quest. He respects them and their opposing views to his, but he has to fight them so he can achieve his goal. He’s truly the best kind of villain. Honorable intentions, but he goes about them in a terrible way because he lacks empathy and thinks that the deaths of trillions are a necessary sacrifice for peace and prosperity.

Watch in the beginning as Thanos walks out of the portal, looks directly into Doctor Strange's direction, and then turns around to the ruins on Titan to soak in the defeat and failure of his people. THEN he confronts Doctor Strange. I love how surprisingly subdued our physically imposing mad titan actually is during this point in his journey versus a slightly more blood thirsty pre-Gauntlet carrying Thanos in Endgame. • What makes thanos more interesting than most mcu villains is his humility and perspective of necessity. He doesn’t try to force his outlook on others or tell them they’re weak for not agreeing with him. He does what he feels he has to do and doesn’t do much to the heroes beyond that. The necessity extends beyond his goal but also how he is in every battle. Before the snap he only takes what he needs and only fights back when he has to. He could’ve killed quill or the avengers in wakanda but didn’t because there wasn’t a need to. He only killed loki and almost killed tony because of how they antagonized him. He doesn’t want to kill anyone along his journey unless absolutely necessary and even shows respect to those like stark who he sees as a brilliant but cursed man worth remembering. He’s not after power for power but power for purpose. What he sees as a grand purpose is a necessity that is needed for the survival of all life in the universe. It’s freaking brilliant.

  • Interesting detail - the floating star-shaped structures on Titan where conceptualized, by art director, as luxury mansions for the wealthy. That were wasting vast resources to be kept floating for no reason other than a display of excess. The "sin" of Titan wasn't overpopulation, but greed and resource inequality. In his phrasing, Thanos subtly indicated his decimation idea was meant to teach the wealthy a lesson by sacrificing a portion of them as randomly and coldly as they sacrificed the poor in their society. Of course, those who have observed that Thanos' plan was nonsensical because it wouldn't really solve problems have to remember: he wasn't meant to be correct. One might even imagine that his original suggestion on Titan was meant to throw a scare into the wealthy elite, as a threat for them to change their ways. It was them refusing and continuing until Titan destroyed itself in a resource war that drove Thanos mad. His determination to literally kill half the universe wasn't really a rational plan (even a wrong one) but one driven by anger and resentment.
