Street Running Trains During LIGHT UP LAGRANGE! Police Keep People Out Of Way Of 3 Trains Running Down The Middle Of Main Street! Train With 8 Locomotives & Over 2 Miles Long! These CSX Street Runner Trains Are In LaGrange, Kentucky. Includes Parade With Santa Claus On Fire Truck.
The police were busy keeping people out of the way of the trains. This is a no train horn zone so they tend to sneak up on people who aren't paying attention. One train did have to blow the horn a few times to alert people. For the most part everyone knows to stay out of the way of the trains. A couple of kids walked in front of the first train and some people walked across in front of the second train. This year the police put up barriers after the first train passed. This is the CSX Short Line or LCL Line. The line runs from Louisville, Kentucky to Cincinnati Queensgate Yard.
I got here early in the day. The first train showed up at 3:27pm which was close to 9 hours since the last train came through. This was a huge intermodal train with a DPU mid train. Notice the children walk across in front of the approaching train. You can hear the police yell at them. This train was a northbound and it was taking the siding in the LaGrange Yard for a southbound manifest to pass.
The second train is the train of the day! This train was just 20 minutes after the first train. It had 6 locomotives on the front and 2 more in the middle. This train was over two miles long! Notice one of the locomotives was a slug. That was pretty cool. I have seen that slug pass over this line but the last time I saw a slug was in Illinois when Hobo Shoestring was showing me some places to film.
The third train showed up at 5:20pm running southbound. The clock next to the track is always accurate, however, it was shut off at 5pm along with the street lights. I didn't realise that the clock was off so I thought it was 5pm. Lol. The train was a long auto racks train. It only needed two locomotives on the front since the train was empty.
The parade started shortly after the last train passed. This video shows the entire parade with Santa Claus riding on the rear of the last fire truck. We also see the line of people waiting to see Santa and we see a lucky little boy getting to meet him. There are other random scenes in the video such as the courthouse under construction, a passenger car and caboose display and the inside of the two rail cars. Don't forget the slide show and a short clip of the Live Action Pets!
Filmed Saturday, December 2, 2023 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

  • 1st train 04:55 - 1 Engine - DPU 08:00 - 64 Cars 2nd Train 13:45 - 5 Engines - 1 SLUG* (CSX 1053) - DPU 20:30 - 173 Cars 3rd Train 27:00 - 2 Engines - 95 Cars *A SLUG is a locomotive that has no prime mover (diesel engine), and is thus incapable of generating power on its own, but still has electric traction motors in its wheels. Their purpose serves as an extra set of powered wheels for when a unit with motive power needs extra traction without the added fuel consumption of an additional engine turning.

    • @@neanderthal88 Kinda makes SLUGs redundant then as they could have a loco in the consist with it's engine shutdown taking power for its traction motors from other locos. If the engine in another loco craps itself then the engine that's shutdown could be turned on and the loco with the busted engine just have its traction motors powered.

Personally JT, I wouldn’t change a thing on how you film, what you film and where you film. On a wet, dark December evening, this is perfect entertainment for me. My wife will put something on the TV and be asleep in less than 5 minutes so it’s headphones on and volume up!

Made me think of all the times I came near places where you bring us great video that I passed driving back and forth from Pittsburgh to Nashville but I never knew! Longest train I have ever seen. • I agree. It sounded like the last loco of the lead 3 locos in front of the slug, then the last of the 6 locos were not running. With the echo of the buildings it is more difficult to hear as well, the one in front of the slug #6114 and last in the front 6 including the slug as a unit, #2032 sounded like they weren't running. I tried to watch for the heat plume but the clouds and distance were preventing me to hear and see see which are definitely working and which weren't. I calculated 172 cars with 688 axle count, plus the 8 locos with a total axle count of 42, for the total of the 720 axles. I must have ADDHDOCD because this is the kind of stuff my mind just does on it's own - to do all the calculations in my mind.

It is a low speed track and a 2 mile uphill struggle out of a 90 degree curve, so the extra traction is needed. I have video of the train getting stuck on the hill. They backed it down about 2 miles and cut the train into two sections, taking one section at a time up past my house. SWP only had 4 axle locos at the time, but now has a few 6 axle locos, so it isn't an issue now.

  • Thanks for this video, "Jaw Tooth"! I really enjoy your filming. Being the grandson of a railway engineer (my grandfather "drove" the Berlin-Brussels route for many years) I enjoy your posts. I also watch the Rail-fan fixed-camera posts, and particularly enjoy LaGrange because of the tricky road vs rails combination there, alongside the one in Virginia whose name escapes me just now ... this getting older business leaves me searching for names, etc that seem to hover just beyond my memory's grasp! But i did want you to know that you have fans in Canada, too! And as for this Christmas visit from The jolly old guy from the North Pole, my mother saw fit to name me Klaus when I was born in Germany, and when she moved us to Canada changed that to "Claus" ... and you can just imagine how THAT went over with my classmates! Fortunately, I was able to use my second name, though my "full name" remains on my passport, and I get to enjoy the silence when a flight-officer looks at my ticket and calls out , hesitantly "Claus"?

  • There were TWO Southern Pacific autoracks!!! What a lovely memory. SP ran two blocks from me for decades. Those tracks are now a local short line, the New Orleans and Gulf Coast, they were once SP MAIN LINE to it's eastern terminus in Algiers, Louisiana a couple miles down the road.

  • Holy crappola, that manifest had 7 powered units and its probably only half way through town so there could be some helpers at the end. I love long trains, especially manifests, so much variety.

  • That second train was incredible JT!!! In all my 66 years, I've NEVER seen a slug before. Never even knew they existed, so was a huge plus to learn about those! Also the NYC car that was in that train also. Wonder how old that was? Great train action and in the midst of all that chaos going on in that town that day!! Thanks for hanging in there for so long to catch those trains coming through. Until next time!!

    • Just a heads up for info- when Conrail was dissolved in 1998, the assets were split between holding corporations and then leased to NS and CSX. To keep equipment separate, equipment acquired by CSX was lettered NYC. It’s likely that car was purchased by Conrail. NS retained the PRR ( Pennsylvania RR) and CR reporting marks. I think as of 2021 all of the equipment now has CSXT reporting marks .
