  • Trent on this performance: “One of the greatest moments of my life was standing onstage next to David Bowie while he sang ‘Hurt’ with me. I was outside of myself, thinking, ‘I’m standing onstage next to the most important influence I’ve ever had, and he’s singing a song I wrote in my bedroom.’ It was just an awesome moment.”

I have to admit, while this is an excellent song of it's own merit, seeing Johnny Cash sing it the way he did - knowing his history - broke me. It's as if the song has come full circle, the way Trent intended it. It's the perfect evolution of this song: Trent as the young beginning genius artist, David as the middle-aged experienced artist, and Johnny Cash as the dying, understanding regretful artist. Each version carries it's own individual story, and yet they're all the same. By the Gods. It's Brilliant.

Spending my mother's money trying to make a Christian album and he intended to put this song on it. I waited until he got his "final cut" to explain who originally wrote the song and the subject matter (heroin)...lets just say he still hates me to this day. • @@yespleasevicar I assure you it's Reeves Gabrels playing. This video is from 1995 (Bowie's Outside Tour which included U.S. dates with Nine Inch Nails). Adrian Belew's final time touring with Bowie was 1990 (Sound & Vision tour). Both tours and both guitarists have Wikipedia articles. Gabrels and Belew are friends, btw. Also, I happen to be Reeves' wife.

    • @@susankastangabrels3014 Haha wow! I'm a huge fan of your partner. It was the Parker Fly that threw me to Belew, apologies.

  • My favourite iteration of one of my favourite songs. The perfect culmination of artistic ability on this version. Trent and Bowie are such an inspiration to me. I wish I could thank both of them for everything they did for me.

  • Trent can't believe his luck. keeps pinching himself, "is that David Bowie over there? Shit he nails the harmonies so well."
