This is where advanced US engineering shines on the battlefield as its technology which creates first advantage in combat. Training, experience, morale and so on follows.

  • I still have some fins from the last javeline I fire in Iraq in 06. Had a sniper shooting through a keyhole and I couldn't get a shot on him. The javeline went right through the keyhole and sheared the fins off. I kept 2 fins front and rear, sent a fin and casing pieces each to the gold star families of the fallen soldiers the sniper connected with, and pieces of the casing to those that were wounded.

    • The IR detectors can be cooled and uncooled types. Later in the video he mentions that the thermal sights on the command control unit is cooled to lower temperatures. (Also the one in the rocket aswell) The cooling of the detector is used to maximize the difference between the temperatures, what makes the detection unit very sensitive but the very cold detector inside can be then detected with another IR device.

  • With all that you failed to explain the one thing that I wanted to know. After the booster motor what is the propellant they're using to propel this thing? I don't see smoke so maybe they're using small liquid propellant tanks? Or maybe a smokeless grain propellant.

    @patman0250@patman0250 Жыл бұрын
    • Probably commercial high performance solid propellant. The launch motor propellant contains lead B-resorcyolate which means this weapon will cause lead exposure, particularly if fired in an enclosed space and failing to evacuate afterward.

      @Tattlebot@Tattlebot Жыл бұрын
    • I guess it's a low burning speed propellant. It's more like the sustained flight motors like used in many missile systems : the first load is really powerful and "brute force" to increase speed quickly, and the second one is more like a slow burning thing, just to maintain the "cruise" speed. We have this on ERYX missiles (the French AT missile / it has short range though, only 900 m max). Sorry if my english is crap ^^

  • Interesting how locking algorithm works. Is it something similar to how computer mice tracks movement? Seeker just constantly looks for its saved locked image of a target? Meaning it can miss if something will get between missile and target during flight? Obstacles that will cause not certainty in tracking target?

    @Stinngerr@Stinngerr Жыл бұрын
    • The missiles flight only takes a few seconds to reach its target. Not two or three hours, really don’t think there’s time for anything to get in its way to break the missiles concentration, LoL.

    • The missile has a perspective from high up in the sky, so it is highly unlikely that anything would get "in a way"... What could it even be, a helicopter? Or perhaps IR smoke all of a sudden? Sure, I guess there is a one in a million chance of that happening. Javelin is not 100% fool proof, you know.

      @joojoojeejee6058@joojoojeejee6058 Жыл бұрын
    • Technically yes, the seeker keeps a profile of its target as it travels in mere seconds. It’s not necessarily akin to a mouse tracking movement, but more of a tracking similar to a motorized security camera. The profile can be disrupted by infrared cloud or incendiary flares. Yes Javelins can be defeated this way. It is part of the training to launch these system as unpredictably as possible. It’s fairly easy against tanks as those system have no countermeasures to detect an incoming threat as the missile doesn’t not give off a radar signature as it only uses cameras and sensors to reach its target. Because of its self targeting, the whole system is fire and forget. Anything to disrupt the shape of the target is enough to stop them, but it’s very difficult to detect them incoming.

      @takel9879@takel9879 Жыл бұрын
    • @@user-ev4pb9xj7e these systems can be defeated when the profile is disrupted. The main advantage of of this system is that it’s a closed loop PID system that doesn’t not output any tracking signature, everything is calculated internally. Because of this, the entire system is fire and forget. To defeat this system, the target will need to be obscured with an infrared jammer such as an IR cloud or a lot of flares. Tanks do have these systems, but the reason why they aren’t effective is because tanks (even US tanks) are not equipped with active radar detection and will not be able to react in time. Targets will need to have detect the Javelin team well before launch if they want to counter them. A proper counter unit will often patrol with the tank as it can provide as a quick reaction force to repel any anti-tank crew. Because Russians don’t follow the same techniques as the US, it’s essentially like shooting fish in a barrel.
