The Melville family chose Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park as their safari destination of choice for their family visiting from the UK. "We wanted to give our sister and her boyfriend an African safari experience." Surely they were not disappointed!
"Making our way out of the park on our last day. There was a white Toyota that overtook us and went out of sight around the corner. As soon as we came around that very corner, the sight of a massive bull elephant greeted us. It was strutting along the road in the direction of the Toyota."
Elephants often walk along roads due to the ease of not having to make their way through the thick bush. Elephants, being such large creatures don't appreciate disrespect. The key is to give them their space and they will react less aggressively. However, what transpired next with this bull elephant was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
"The elephant approached the tiny white Toyota, and we all held our breath. Expecting the elephant to damage this vehicle in some way. Suddenly the passenger door flings open, and out comes a man running! The vehicle was filled with shock, and shortly after, bursts of laughter broke out. At this point, we could not believe our eyes."
Humans intrinsically have one of three reactions to fear. Fight, flight, or freeze. Clearly, the gentleman chose flight as his preferred method of handling the situation.
"With the man's sporadic decision to abandon his vehicle. We turned to the elephant and were unsure who was more surprised-the elephant or the man. The elephant displayed signs of shock and confusion as to what had just transpired. Eventually, the elephant decided it may be best for him to move off."
"After what felt like a lifetime, the running man appeared out of nowhere, got back into his vehicle, and was on his way again. Perhaps his bizarre decision saved his life and his vehicle."
The African bush is a place of surprises, and no day will be like another. Fortunately for the Melville family, the elephant moved off, and they were left with laughs and a story that will only be believed when watched.

The man was a complete twit! The elephant wasnt even being that aggressive. Its about the most stupid behaviour I have ever seen in a National Park, I dont blame the guys filming for laughing so much. If the elephant had have killed him then the elephant would have got hunted down by rangers probably, so he also put the animal at risk with his dumb actions.

He wasn't the driver. Judging from the tail lights, whoever was driving had his foot on the brakes and I would assume was thinking the best strategy was to stay completely still. His passenger apparently disagreed and abandoned him to his fate.

he was sitting on the left, being the passenger seat, as this happened in South Africa. we drive on the left side of the road. My guess - the driver - seated on the right closest to the elephant, probably didn't drive off and the passenger guy lost his nerve.

Story told me by an expat worker in Morogoro, Tanzania, as he heard it. Fella saved to buy a brand-new Honda, then spent days driving all over the country to show it off to friends and relatives. Was driving back at night through Vic Falls n.p. when he ran into an elephant. Enraged tusker proceeded to destroy the car...with the owner in it. He couldn't get out because the door quickly got jammed. Eventually the elephant stormed off and the guy somehow managed to drive it the rest of the way home. He kept it and it became a local tourist attraction. "See the car destroyed by an elephant!" I don't know if he charged for a look-see or not.

I don't understand why people go to see animals in the wild. We're not prepared for emergencies. Those people that are laughing could have been in the same situation within a blink of the eye.

Wild animals shouldn't have to deal with annoying humans coming around and harassing them in their homes. If you have ever driven through Hluhluwe in particular, you would understand just how aggressive their Elephants & Giraffes are, and it literally feels like the car is not moving at all. @@kumarsubramanian6281 yeah when doing training we saw a dead rhino, it was killed by an elephant on musth. Next night our Landy broke down and the same elephant came very close to us. Needless say that I was scared. Thankfully the elephant walked away after 30min and we were able to hop onto another Landy. When we left we saw a pride of lions less than 30 meters from where we got on the vehicle.
