  • I think a larger launch pad area would help you get better spin; it doesn’t have to go far to end up on the grass, which adds friction and therefore slows your spin. A hard metal wire, placed vertically and inserted in the center underneath could also help to guide it straight upwards (much like the Estes rocket launch pads)...

  • I enjoy living vicariously through you. Back when I was young in the 1990s I got into fireworks making. Primarily mortar shells, with rice hulls, iron filings, then I started making color changing stars in a brass tumbler affair. I was making my own powder with charcoal grape vine too. By the time I started making 4" shells, I had a haunting feeling ( while pressing wet powder into cakes in a metal pipe with a hydraulic jack) that I was also pressing my luck, so I stopped. Lots of fun though!

    • @@CarlosRios1 i learnt about operating systems, and managed to make one that implements ps/2, gdt, paging, acpi, pcie, usb and has a nice windowed gui with uefi as a bootloader. im also incredibly proud of myself, i wanted to do something like this for 4 years now but i've always been scared off. now i made my own path that goes parallel to the most people's and it worked out.

  • Next year: a plane where the entire frame and body is made out of different kinds of fireworks (maybe allow the cardboard boxes to help make wings so it can actually fly) - either powered by electric RC motors or rocket motors, with a remote switch to set off all the fireworks while in the air.

  • The best performance I got from a spinning winged firework was one that had the good heft and looked well made. Get a good model propeller and balance the prop with an engine FIRMLY glued to each blade tip for balance.

  • I love watching this. I'm so happy to see your excitement in pursuing this hobby. I'm a 73 year old engineer and 35 year member of the PGI (Pyrotechnics Guild International). I started making my own black powder when I was 12 years old. Watching you is like watching myself through a time machine. You should investigate joining the PGI, they can provide a wealth of knowledge. Oh, and quit buying those expensive motors and make your own...it's really easy. Keep up the good work, have fun and be safe.

    • check out my comment about that failure of the engine. its probably because its a large diameter estes. those larger BP grains are more likely to have thermal expansion contraction issues or mishandling during shipping, retail, or consumer handling. it creates cracks in the grain. the burn follows the cracks and increases the surface area being burned exponentially as the grain is consumed. instead of going woosh its more likely to go POP. CATO - or catastrophic take off in rocketry - often occur for this reason in BP engines.

  • I used to use my slingshot to launch what were known as "Ground Flowers" into the night sky. Normally, they just skitter along the ground, changing from red to green to yellow/white while spinning around in circles. However, once launched, they assume the characteristics of how UFOs are supposed to be seen behaving. They really become a lot more fun, my way.

  • Some other time I'd personally love to see giant versions of those snake-growing things and those "snap" thingies that explode with a loud snap when you throw them. Not as cool to look at, perhaps, but those were the only things I was allowed to use growing up. Lots of nostalgia for them.

  • The plastic body ones (I think they called them "Buzz Bombs") have water proof fuses. So lighting one and putting into water (be quick!) will pull a column of water up with it when it goes off. Great at night BTW.

  • Years back I had so many packs of Ground Bloom Flower fireworks. On the pavement of my nearby school, I found a used "Plane Flying at Night" firework and realized that it is a larger Ground Bloom Flower with cardboard wings. I disassembled it and traced the flattened-out cardboard to scale with the Flower firework. After a few fails I figured out the correct angle to fasten the firework into the reusable wing. With dozens to shoot off, most were the usual take off into the night sky. BUT, some did some cool things like hover twenty feet up and bob up and down. Some started off slowly gaining height and then rapidly took off. Then I became more creative and added a Jumping Jack or two, or Lady Finger firecrackers.

  • It might be more successful using staging. One first stage rocket engine taped together with the second stage. The first stage engine has an ignition charge & no time delay rather than a standard ejection charge for a parachute.
