kzhead.info...
Bmw mini cooper s r56 N14 turbo engine with a horrible death rattle coming from the timing chain. Found the car to be 3 litres underfilled with oil, when topping up I found a piece of timing chain guide inside the cylinder head under the oil cap. This issue applies to the N12 N14 N18 engines too. This is a PSA Peugeot Citroen engine and is used in many of their models such as the 207 gti and many others.

  • I viewed a 2009 MINI yesterday that sounded like this. Walked away. A shame because it was otherwise mint and had been cared for. Chocolate engines.

    • If you don't know what you're looking for, it can be hard to tell the difference between the fuel injectors tick and death rattles. Unless if you've owned a Mini, it's almost impossible to tell the difference by just watching videos.

  • Yep - 62k miles clutch is gone but needs a flywheel too. 6 hours labour plus parts...stupid price to replace .. Only ever replaced one clutch in 40 years of driving until i bought a mini....

  • But isn't the real issue the amount of oil that the mini engine seems to consume? It's all well and good commenting that the engine was missing the required oil, but if all your life you've driven other cars that have almost never needed oil in between services, and then jump into a car that according to some reports the JCW (don't know about other variants) needs as much as a Litre of oil every 1700miles, surely that's something that should be said to every mini driver, at every opportunity as well as a big sticker on the windscreen that says 'HAVE YOU CHECKED YOUR OIL THIS WEEK?'

    @SeanHendy@SeanHendy3 жыл бұрын
    • I think this issue has been sorted in the newer models, surely the sensor would've told the driver the oil is low?

      @jimmynich4791@jimmynich47913 жыл бұрын
    • @@jimmynich4791 unless they've added a low oil sensor. There is an oil pressure warning light, but I can say with absolute certainty that the 2011 mini does not have a low oil level sensor.

    • @@SeanHendy That's crazy that it doesn't. I have a 208 gti and had a very bad oil leak a couple of years ago, literally anything I put in was draining straight out of the leak. If I didn't have the warning come on the damage to the engine would've probably killed it I think. I had an issue with the thermostat which drained all the coolant, I was expecting more problems after these issues but the car has been fine, was checked no damage at all. 8 years old now and they're the only times somethings gone wrong. A work colleague has a JCW mini that he hasn't had long he just spent £1400 on a new flywheel and clutch but he could've just been unlucky.

    • With absolute certainty my statement is correct. Another 3k miles and another 2+ litres of oil. No leaks no spots on the parking bay.

  • BMW/Mini has literally only listed a new part for the timing chain - so I suspect, the "old" one was too rough on the guides, hence you saw pieces of them getting chipped away and they would fail, not the chain itself. This has nothing to do with oil.. It's basic physics, if a hard, sharp surface grinds on a less sturdy one - the later breaks after time. It's like a catch 22 - we have chain problems -> use better metal - now it eats our "plastic" guides -> use better plastic -> now the chain is wearing again -> use better metal... And so on and so forth... There was a fine balanced working theory behind chain engines in the 80's late 90's, which was changed due to let's make engines cheaper!!! Yeah there you have it, chained engines are not reliable anymore, let's go for a timing belt change every 60-70k miles!!

    @drazman9@drazman92 жыл бұрын
    • Sorry to blow your theory wide open, but here it is. As someone who has had to have the engine opened up and the timing chain and guides replaced, the issue is as follows: The Mini has a low oil pressure warning system/light, but not a low oil system. When there isn't enough oil, the increase in temperature causes the timing chain to overheat and lengthen, creating slack. Enough slack for it to hit the guides at high revs. Enough contact and the guides break. I have closely monitored my engine ever since, and have heard the chain making contact with the guides a few times since. The oil consumption being the issue every time. It doesn't help that the dipstick markings and the ability of the dipstick to even measure the oil level is very poor indeed. I've even had the oil level checked and topped up by a mechanic, only to then go for a service a few weeks later (full oil change) and be told there was nowhere near enough oil in the engine.

  • I’m a Mini owner and ignored all of the warnings given by other owners. If you live in the U.S., please do yourself a favor and go for almost any other brand. From my experience, I would go for any other make besides BMW/Mini. They’re constantly in need of maintenance, and that maintenance is much more expensive than any car I’ve ever owned (regardless of the type of malfunction). If you are looking for a high-maintenance, expensive problem-child and you have the means to maintain it, by all means have at it.
