Russian missile attacks have become part of everyday life for the people of Ukraine. Western air defense systems have helped Ukraine deal with
these attacks. But on the front lines the threat from ever larger and more dangerous Russian glide bombs is growing. DW correspondent Nick Connolly meets Ukrainian soldiers who are learning to live with this danger.

    • Well, it is true that Russia pretty much burned through much, even most of prewar stocks. In addition to their ongoing transfer to a full bore war economy, they imported quite a large number of shells and missiles from the NK's and Iranians. This has allowed them to continue the war at a high tempo that would have been impossible but for the weapons transfers...

IT cost about a million per missile , still is was a big deal , because Russia destroyed with just 1 million dollars 2.5 billions worth of Air defenses. with its entire officers operators and special forces protecting them. SO from 60 people ,high paid military officers got killed in a single iskander strike. Russian rocket artillery like Tordado -S ,which is the Russian equivalent to HIMARS ,also have been able to hit them too and with Hypersonic missiles too.

      @tihi1788@tihi17887 күн бұрын
    • @@tihi1788 You do realize that within these 2.5 years, Russia has destroyed 4 versions of the Ukrainian military to the point where not only is Ukraine begging EU nations to send back Ukrainians who fled at the start of the war and Kiril Budanov admits they are out of reserves, Ukraine is going to use prisoners as soldiers. Also NATO nations are being depleted of their weapons and admit that they do not have the manufacturing capacity to meet the demands of this attrition war. Essentially, Russia has demilitarized Ukraine and Europe. This isn't about land so much. It's about destroying a military threat and Russia is doing that at a pace it is comfortable with. • Главное помнить: Россия горела ровно столько раз, сколько раз были повержены её враги. В России главная ценность - это семья, родные люди: родители, братья, сёстры, дети, друзья. Сейчас мы не чувствуем угрозу со стороны Украины и запада, локальные конфликты возникали всегда и во всех точках земного шара. Большая часть граждан России продолжает жить мирной жизнью, редко чувствуя присутствие войны. НО! Но если каждый из нас почувствует угрозу родной земле, родному дому, и, в конце концов, родным и близким людям, то каждый возьмется за оружие и, если потребуется, отдаст за всё это свою жизнь (даже женщины, например, моя мама 1969 года не против воевать, если потребуется). И, поверьте, цена наших жизней для тех, кто всё это начал, будет очень велика. Даже если мы вдруг проиграем, даже если мы все погибнем, мы прихватим с собой столько врагов, сколько возможно, а возможно всех. Россия сейчас не воюет всем составом, всеми средствами и в полную силу. Мне 29, я мужчина, все мои друзья мирно живут и ни один не участвует в СВО. Россия не воюет всеми средствами, как это делает, например, Израиль в Палестине. Россия не воюет по принципу НАТО, когда всё вокруг бомбами превращается в пепел. НО ЭТО СКОРО МОЖЕТ НАЧАТЬСЯ. Не думаю, что кому-либо это действительно хочется, ни со стороны России, ни со стороны Запада.

    • There isn't a huge difference in cost between these Russian glide bombs and an American JDAM. The Russian kits are estimated at $20,000 while JDAMs are estimated at between $21,000 and $36,000. Main difference in cost is probably that wages in the U.S. are about 4 times higher than those in Russia. The Russian glide bombs have somewhat longer range (about 50km vs. about 30km) while the American JDAMs are slightly more precise, but that is mostly a reflection of the differing military doctrine than anything else. American doctrine focuses heavily on obtaining and maintaining air superiority, so by the time they're dropping JDAMs they don't really need to care about air defense or enemy aircraft.

They do one job very well: protecting friendly forces. That comes at a monetary price that is worth paying in asymmetrical warfare. But in old fashioned steel-on-steel battles, such as the west has not fought since Vietnam, quantity begets a quality all of its own, and monetary costs start to matter. Something that Russia and Ukraine understand. The west also understands this, and they know that high tech defenses against low tech weapons like glide bombs and shahed drones cannot keep up indefinitely. For the west, these weapons are a game changer, not in the sense that they cannot counter them, but in the sense that they must do so cheaply.

  • The biggest issue nobody is talking about is that Ukraine has lost its fighting spirit. Just the fact that they have to draft men into service is proof that not enough men are willing to risk their lives for their country. But it's a lot worse in reality: Those drafted overwhelmingly refuse being drafted. The worst they have to face is a fine. And don't get me wrong, I would do the same thing. I'd rather go into debt for the rest of my life rather than lose my life on the front lines. And most of those who go into service right now WILL die. This dynamic is not something Ukraine can survive. No country in a war can survive the unwillingness of its citizens to fight.

  • Its a cheap and still effective version of the US glidebombs. The russians probably have countless thousands of normal bombs of various sizes from the soviet era in storage and now modding them into glidebombs. The biggest one at the moment is 1500kG. Its a deadly bunkerbuster and can flatten entire fortified highrise buildings. And it seems they are working on the 3000kG version,although i bet those are only for specialy hard targets. Ukraine aswered this threat with stationing Patriot AA-batteries nearer to the front in order to reach the glidebomb cariers,but then those are also more vulnerable for attacks and they lost quite a few of this very expensive batteries in recent weeks,empowering the russian airforce even more.

    • Russia has a wide arsenal of PGM. They have LASER and satellite guided bombs, just like Paveway and JDAM. They haven't used them much, because their range is too short for such a contested airspace. The only thing new here, is their addition of a simple glide kit. They're having issues adapting the guidance calculation and the fusing, for the glide glide path, which results in a lot going off target or hitting at too shallow angle to detonate. But, they're learning fast and improving.

The US used Vietnam era bombs in Iraq with JDAM bolt on kits. The Paveway, the US' LASER guided bomb, is a bolt on kit (my dad worked on the assembly line for them at TI right after he got out of the Navy). The only thing 'new' for Russia, about these bombs, is the glide kit which is a bit more sophisticated than a simple GPS guided gravity bomb.

    • The actual story of the Space Pen is proof of just how well the American system works. First off, nobody uses pencils in space. Not the Americans or Russians. Before the Space Pen, they used grease pencils. Secondly, the American government didn't spend a dime on space pens. A private company developed a pen that worked in space. They gave hundreds of them to NASA for free on the condition that they could advertise and sell the Space Pen as the pen that astronauts used. Fisher Space Pen Company made a bundle of money selling these pens to kids who wanted to be astronauts and NASA got a bunch of pens for free. These days NASA needs to buy them for about $5 a pop (in bulk) since their original supply of a few hundred ran out. If you want to buy a Space Pen they are still available to the public, starting at $8. It is, after all, a product of American capitalism.
