Liz Truss on who really runs Britain | SpectatorTV

It's now 18 months since Liz Truss left Downing Street. She has written a memoir, Ten Years to Save the West, which records her political career since first becoming a cabinet minister. In her first broadcast interview to promote the book, she tells Fraser Nelson about why she thinks the OBR and the Supreme Court should be abolished; how Donald Trump is better for the defense of Ukraine than Joe Biden; and why she didn't listen to her husband when he warned her that her leadership bid would all end in tears.

  • So basically we don't live in a democracy where who we vote for make the key policies, it's done by others who aren't elected, so what's the point of voting for the party you feel has the right policies for you when their hands are tied and they can't change a dam thing!. Which is what I got from watching this!.

    • Yes thats about it in a nutshell its common knowledge to any child given they start asking the right questions. People vote for 3 reasons only for their own interests or to stop others against their interests. A small few actually think that their vote counts like the nutshell you state above they either find out or not just like fractional reserve banking or entities based on maritime law.

    • I totally disagree with your view of the Civil Service! Having worked in various Departments for 51 years, we followed at all times the ideals of public service. You should remember the ethos that governs the Service that it stays fair and impartial and outside politics. It is the duty of the Service to give advice and to warn where necessary but not to try to change or obstruct the decisions of Government. Where problems have risen, it’s been in my experience where Governments have appointed people from outside the Civil Service to senior roles within the Service. Your experience, I accept, might have been different from mine but I am proud of my colleagues over those long years of service who worked selflessly for various Governments both Labour and Conservative. Trashing the British Civil Service seems to have become a fashion these days and it’s not maybe surprising given the last 14 years; but I think our reputation will outlast the current administration :-)

    • I went in with the dream to change the world for the better and then I got to the UN. It is the epitome of hypocrisy and double standards. All your good ideas are poached by seniors and they are loyal only to sponsors. The system is rotten, but it benefits the few wealthy and they will pay any money, sell their soul or pay for the demise of others to ensure that system never changes. If it does change many luxuries they provide for the common man will be gone. Prepare to grow your own food and farm your own animals. Most people don’t have the stomach for a total system overhaul so make the best of life while you have it and not get your blood pressure up.

    • We do live in a democracy. The problem is that people think the cold war propaganda of the west is what democracy is. Democracy is totalitarian, it has always been totalitarian and will be totalitarian because that is the central theme of it's political formula. De Jouvenel goes over this, Robert Michels goes over this, Carl Schmitt goes over this, even Marx gets this aspect correct. This is all old knowledge that everyone should know by now, however people like Liz never seem to have actually read any political philosophy in her life or if she has, she didn't internalise any of it. Her entire worldview seems to boil down to slogans from the last 20 years. Look at her talking about Quangos. She doesn't have anything to say about them beyond "they're unaccountable activists". If you want to know about Quangos (Or NGO's as we now call them), Read C.A Bonds nemisis, or Francis Saunders CIA and the cultural cold war. All the foundations and institutes are fronts for the US state department, CIA or both. Liz talks about them as is they are just a collection of uni students protesting their cause to the government and not state funded organisations. Her takes are very surface level for someone who led the nation and it's not surprising that Rishi was able to coup her out of government with a fake financial crisis.

  • Honestly has to be one of the best PR cover ups by the treasury claiming the mini budget was the reason for crashing bond market and hence rise in mortage rayes. Basically we owned 60% of the worlds LDI’s which were sensitive to interest rises since the interest you have to pay back on LDI’s matches the current interest rates and given inflation at the time of course interest rates rose. Pensions were also heavily invested in LDI’s. When interest rates rose the BOE decided to sell/short its LDI’s shares hence crashing the bond market, also made worse by the strengthening US dollar and asian markets taken advantage of UK owned LDI’s. The timing of all this was coincidental and the treasury used her mini budget as a scapegoat and how the hell they got away without an investigation is beyond me. Thousands of people have lost most of their pensions and rises in mortgages leading to people loosing their homes… Also what is annoying is that the OBR said there was a £70 billion blackhole of missing taxyoayer money when there wasnt when she announced her budget trying to make her cuts seem unaffordable. To those that say her tax cuts were unaffordable, although she cut loads of tax the plan was to freeze goverment spending indefinitely. Currently with Rishi even though he brings in more tax revenue, he had also spends more. If you look at the figures we actually would have already been better off with Liz tax cuts due to less government spending compared to now.

So the problem existed when Cameron-Clegg came into office and nothing has been done to resolve the blob issues and Truss admits they made it worse. So why did she not get on a platform years ago and shout about this. So the longer this discussion goes on the more and more right the analysis of those regularly abused by Tory politicians. People like me who complained about the EU and its effects on democracy and at a Bruges Group meeting soon after he took over the Speccie editorship he seemed not to understamnd the point. So UKIP nutcases were right and those oh, so clever chaps in Whitehall were wrong. Still no explan ation why we cannot use work permits instead of "immigration" which is permanent right to abode, regardless of official status. Increaded immigration makes the countryt poorer unless the average earning sof them is aboiut three times current avderage UK income and that must take accoiunt of all dependants of anyone with a work permit. The idea there is an adverse relationship between controlled, lower immigration and GDP growth is barmy. Just mad.

  • Liz Truss still doesn't seem to realise that she was brought down by a rather arcane technicality in the financial markets, which caught everybody by surprise. (I mean everybody). Who knew that the defined benefits pension industry had structured their portfolios for maximum profits, using massive leveraging on their gilt holdings (with fancy derivatives to offset risks), called LDI, but which could not handle a spike in interest rates over too short a period, which in turn led to a cascading gilts market, owing to the margin calls and forced sales of their gilt holdings? This was the "crash flash" of the rather boring gilts market. Thank God, the BOE stepped in to save the economy. Question: have the defined benefits pension scheme portfolios been restructured to eliminate this risk, or is the time bomb still there?

She refers to “the left”, but I think she means the public/private partnership or managerialism as described by James Burnham (in the managerial revolution 1941). Whereby, the traditional capitalist entrepreneur is replaced by the asset management fund. Which has a symbiotic relationship with Government (buying rubbish government bonds and in turn expecting to be bailed out if they ever face problems). Because she doesn’t have the language to describe it, it leads to her saying things like “lefty bankers” etc which the public just laugh at.
