  • I think maybe a stream flowed over a deposit of malachite, grinding the rock into sand or silt. Humans maybe came across this by accident in the river bed, and found it could be used as a pigment. Someone built their campfire on top of the malachite sand, and later when the fire went out they found copper metal in the ashes.

    • Fascinating theory! We thought a similar thing but from the information we found, a fire would not be hot enough to melt Malachite. We haven't tested it, so all bets are off :) Cheers!

    • @@mindex_ Is there anywhere in the world where a lava flow could have engulfed a malachite deposit during a volcanic eruption? I understand that the ancient Egyptians discovered glass in the desert made from an asteroid impact. Maybe somewhere an asteroid impact hit a surface malachite deposit en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libyan_desert_glass
