🌈 2017 BMW 1200 GSA gas cap won't open due to an unknown issue, seems mechanical like the solenoid is not working or the mechanism is worn and sticking. I have tried lubricant with no luck. After finding out BMW wants over 400$ for just the part I took matters into my own hands and fixed it. saving me over 600$ after labor.

  • Interesting solution. I have a brand knew '22 GSA and the gas cap stuck on mine. Rather than eliminate the electronics I spent some time investigating what was going on and I found two things both reported by others. First, that little pin / plunger assembly gets dirty, especially if you are riding in a lot dirt / dust. You can feel that if you manually try to move the plunger back and forth. I've used a combination of break cleaner and WD40 to clean mine. The second issue is if you tighten up the two top screws too much which is pretty easy to do when you add that extra ring for the tank bag (I haven't done that yet). One of the solutions to getting your gas cap open is to push down on it before trying to open and that helped me out although with a plunger that is dirty (or has too much pressure and can't move) that may not work. In any case, whatever works for you. And, it would likely be cheaper to do what you did and then purchase a locking gas cap if you wanted it!

    • thanks for your input, I tried lubing and tightening bolts, but the prob just kept getting worse so I took drastic action. I'm happy with it now. Its a bad design if you ask me.

    • In my 2022/2023 R1250 GSA the gas cap have stucks after 2 weeks brand new, on-road use only. The dirty doesn't explain that. I use to push down the cap firmly while pull the lever. Is working for now, but I have concerns about the gas cap getting older. More strange is that I left a R1200GS 2018 after 4 years since brand new, 40k km ride and never had hapened. The system is same.

  • It’s an extremely stooped design to begin with. When mine decides to kick and I’m past warranty, I’ll yank that pin right out, too. Thanks!

  • I have a 2019 always find dust and tiny stones under the dust cap, I think it’s a design fault! Hand the cover the hole into the tank the fish out the dirt from around the metal mechanism you pulled out. There shouldn’t be any dirt getting in there in the first place. Keep an eye on it whenever you fill up. And when you close it lift the tab all the way up push down on the edge of the cap beside the tab and release the tab. 🍻

  • I had a similar issue today , managed to get it open by removing the top section of the outer circle which is held in place by the 2 screws and then found that I couldn't get it to close , finally worked out that it will only operate if I have turned the ignition on and opened the cap within 10 seconds of turning it off, obviously some sort of safety system, so if it won't close after you've filled the tank , turn the ignition on and then turn it off again, also a good idea to clean the little pin with a drop of GT85 using a small artist brush , hope this helps someone but have to say I like what you did , it's great to stick two fingers up to the big corporate boys who would rob us all blind given half a chance . Also hope you checked your service book to see if they ticked the box in your service schedule to say whether or not they had changed your 2019 air filter 👍🏻 . Thanks for posting .

    • that's how my issues started it just got worse and worse. I never tried lubricant but as you have seen in my video the lock pin bent and is not replaceable. The only choice is to buy the entire assembly. My advice is don't abuse the gas cap. LOL ride safe.

  • Thank you very much for this video. My 2017 1200RT keyless gas cap was opening intermittently just before the warranty ran out and I wasn't quick enough in getting it addressed. My question is: can the fix be done simply by yanking the pin out without the extra dismantling etc? Thanks!

    @mountdore@mountdore8 ай бұрын
    • probably, i took it apart to try and fix it but once i saw this pin bent I knew it had to come out, you might be able to pull it like a tooth with the right tools, good luck ! I have had zero issues since doing this fix.

  • You could have just filed the tang off that sticks down into that sliding lock bolt. 2 minutes same deal, No more lock.

    • no that would cause you to have no clip for the snap to catch on. and cap would be open to air.

      @FrankBartalotta@FrankBartalotta9 ай бұрын
    • @@FrankBartalotta I think hes talking about the bit that goes directly down into the locking mechinism not the part that catches and stops it opening. I was thinking the same thing as mines just got stuck. My bike is still under warranty though so I may try with that before I go chopping bits off!

    • Indeed, keep is clean and very lightly lubed with thin lubricant and it might not stay locked when you need to fill the bike up. In short, it is a crappy design. If BMW ever designs an airplane, I'm not getting on it, that is for sure.

In fact, there is still a reason why I still have an 1986 R80 G/S Paris Dakar and 1990 R100 GS. I can get those going anywhere.

  • Too much electronics in BMW bikes, they need to back peddle a little and go back to key start and a key to open the tank. This is an Adventure bike, not a city bike so keep it simple BMW. The dealer told me to keep a WD40 on the bike, not acceptable BMW, get rid of the problem as customers pay a lot of money for a GS.

    • I understand your frustration. It can be disheartening to see mistakes being made in any industry, especially one that you're passionate about like the motorcycle industry. It's natural to feel like these mistakes might be specific to the MC industry, but it's important to remember that every industry has its share of problems and shortcomings.
