32" tires on Land Rover BEFORE and AFTER 2.5' Lift (LR3)

It was time to upgrade the stock tires. I went with the largest I felt would comfortably fit. 275/65/18 tires (roughly 32 inches). It was too tight before the lift, but after the lift it fits nice. A small bit of rubbing when turning sharp in reverse, but a okay when moving forward.

  • Nice looking rig, we do off road recovery in the area where we live and after running around with me My wife is looking at these things as her next build as it provides all the creature comforts for the kids and she really enjoys doing the recoveries with me. That being said I like the look yet drivability that this truck appears to have, can you share the wheel specs (offset/backspacing and such) as well since it looks like you did your homework and had minimal trimming to do after the install.

    • Hi Boston, thanks for the good words, and LR can be a great mix for Offroad and comfort in my opinion. As for the specs I am running, the rims in this instance are BMW 162. They are staggered. Fronts are 18x8 with 34 offset. Rears are 18x8.5 with 37 offset. Rims are 18 inch. The tires are 275/65/18 Falken Wildpeaks. As for offsets, I like the stance better than factory, could it be even better, likely but I selected the BMW 162's because I like their look and they were a cheap. They were within the offset ranges I was willing to accept and they have been great thus far. Good luck in your Off Road Recovery. I have to say that sounds like it could be a fun and rewarding job!

  • How are the bags holding up? I was reading that the rods extend things further than what the bags are used to and what they have molded to over the years. That causes them to leak pretty quickly. You might have newer bags, or he might be wrong! Curious to hear how it's holding up. Looks really good.

    @Ryansrangereport@Ryansrangereport6 жыл бұрын
    • Well it has so far only been a month since I installed the lift, But so far so good! no leaks, no lowering over days of being parked. No issues. But I do know what you mean about the concern when the bags get old. They get used to being in just one position. But so long as your bags are in okay shape from a flexibility standpoint I would think there is possibility it would be less of a concern. The reason I would think that is the lift changes the resting position of the bags so that the previously rolled section will move to the outside and allow the part to become straight where it previously was flexed. Thus that should be easier on the part of the bag that would be the most worn out by time. On the flip side of course if you bag is really brittle, the interior portion will now become the bottom flexed portion. I would think this would be one of the last parts of the bag to go bad. But if you are border line, that inside portion will now become the bottom fold and the most stressed portion of the bag. So in short, I do buy into the concept that old bags can leak/crack. But if playing the odds I think the risk is greater on lowering your vehicle, and less on raising it. One way you can check is just put your LR in offroad height and inspect the bags. Or leave it that way overnight. That is the position it will be at when your lift is done. So if it is okay at Offroad height test you should be okay. (your mileage may vary) Good luck!

  • Could you put those tyres on the standard rims?

    @user-yv8kd2jo2x@user-yv8kd2jo2x5 жыл бұрын
    • Yes, Technically they are still 18 inch tires, so they could fit on the stock rims. But they would likely increase the rubbing during turns as they stock rims have a lower offset. Which means they would be sunk deeper toward the center line of the vehicle. It also runs the potential of not fitting on the car if the tire is too fat as it could rub on the shock itself. I didnt check that clearance myself on the stock rims since I knew I was using different rims, so it still could be fine on that front too, but it is something that is worth measuring if you are upsizing your tires. (just to be clear, the above are just things to consider. I am not trying to discourage you from doing it. Could be great, just need to measure first once you pick your final tires size. I personally cut off just a couple small pieces of the rover to clear these wheels when turning. On stock rims it would likely need less cutting on the outer bumper which I did, and more trimming on the inner wheel well, which I also did. :) ) Good luck!

  • Did this significantly change the gear ratio such that the truck seems to drag more on acceleration? Reason I ask is I put slightly larger tires on an older 4Runner (I own an LR4 as well) and I could tell it did not want to accelerate like before. Not a big deal but still very noticeable.

    @mateostyle@mateostyle5 жыл бұрын
    • Yes, totally. The acceleration has been affected. But only really noticeable at higher speeds. For how it feel is in the LR3 it is very minor from stop (0 mph) up to about 45. So basically no change in the lower gears. But After 45 it starts to feel more sluggish, and as for highway speeds its takes longer to build and reduce speed, because not only the effective gear ratio changed, but also the increased rotational mass that has to be slowed. Now is it bad enough for me to want to put back on the smaller tires... no. But yes, you can feel the difference on the top end.

    • Far Reach Engineering thanks for clarifying 🙏🏻 I understand that wheels such as these almost always require a lift kit and seeing as almost any overland vehicle is equipped with both it seems as if the decreased safety is negligible. But I would be grateful to know your opinion on how Discovery handles such modifications compared to other vehicles in terms of safety, e.g. Defender, Land Cruiser, etc.

      @hxkdneuxbxjdidndnxj@hxkdneuxbxjdidndnxj3 жыл бұрын
    • @@hxkdneuxbxjdidndnxj That is a difficult question to compare, as there are many variables in various models. And I think addressing some of the variables is more important than the specific model. 1. Lift height. The higher you lift any vehicle the higher you lift the center of gravity (CoG). And the CoG is what matters. A mild lift will have little effect. A significant lift, Like 12 inches), will have a much larger effect. 2. Width of vehicle. If you widen the track of the vehicle it increases the rolling stability of the truck. Thus wider rims and tires can actually make the truck harder to roll. A mild lift with wider track could actually be safer if done correctly (note this LR3 has a widened track with lift). 3. Tire choice. Tire selection is your direct contact with the ground. Squishy tires that increase roll will also decrease safety because of lean angle and weight transfer. This can be addressed with tire pressures and stiffer tire compounds and plys. I will leave the variable list here, but most trucks can be modified to be good overlanders that handle strong off camber angles. Mods to have a price, but they can be done safely when considering the options.

    @micahjohnson4851@micahjohnson48512 жыл бұрын
    • Hi Micah, for me, no reprogramming was necessary. After adding the rods, I started it up and let sit until it set the suspension height. To me it seemed like it created a new base value. After that it was all done and I drove it like normal. Basically install. Turn it on. Wait a while. Then go like normal.

      @geralddumasal7563@geralddumasal75635 жыл бұрын
    • I follow you now. When installed the fronts were basically at the stops. While I didnt test it on the road I would expect to still be able to move forward and back, but turning would rub heavily. So it would not be ideal, but it wouldnt be dead stuck if that serious situation came up.

      @FarReachFR@FarReachFR5 жыл бұрын

    • @@FarReachFR What do you mean "special lug kit"?

      @sarcmtngoat@sarcmtngoat5 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks for the reminder, I need to post a video on the kit. In short, the lug nuts on a Land Rover wont work on BMW wheels because the way Land Rover attaches wheels in a different way. You would think it would be really basic, but Rover uses a lug that covers the entire thread cylinder. while that is pretty cool, it has a adverse effect in that if you try to bolt other wheels to your Rover, they wont fit. BMW also has unique lug nuts. Where most cars you put nuts on studs, BMW actually has you use bolts than screw into the hubs. Once again pretty neat, but makes it so you can not interchange many rims. Combine those two problems into one car when you try to bolt BMW to Land Rover you have double the issues. Luckily, I found a third solution that bridges the gap by using a unique lug kit that is matched to the Rover pitch and matched to the BMW conical bolt sections. It is simpler than it sounds, but it took some research to get the right ones. So if you want to bolt BMW to Land Rover, I have a kit that will do that easily.

    @amana1480@amana14805 жыл бұрын
    • Correct, both rims the old and new are 18 inches in diameter. The TIRES though are larger. The old tires were 29 inches in diameter. The new tires are 32 inches in diameter. (thus the 32s.) The new rims have no impact on diameter but they do have a better offset that allow the bigger tires to more easily clear the struts and give a broader wheel track. Plus I just like how they look. :) Thanks for asking the question!

    • @@FarReachFR Thanks for your reply. Will the wheels being further out have much affect on the wear/stress at the wheel bearings? I think the wheel bearings are a pretty poor design on these cars? (I have the same car)

      @amana1480@amana14805 жыл бұрын
    • Aman A The technical answer is yes. but the real answer is no, not really. This is for a couple reasons. the 1st is that while moving the offset or wheels farther to the outside can technically increase the leverage or force on the bearing, that does not take in to account that a greater offset is often tied to a wider rim. And the wider rim then generally cancels out the change because it recenters the force on the rim and makes it centralized again. In essence making it a non issue. (also even if that was not the case and widths were equal we are generally talking about a difference in millimeters (not inches or feet) when it comes to offset changes so the technical yes is still a relatively small change overall).
