It’s not even funny. Google assistant has been able to do so much more for the past 3 years at least. Siri is pretty trash especially when using CarPlay vs androids auto assistant and trying to be productive without touching your phone

You make all these features sound sensational, but Apple is basically just catching up with everybody else. None of this stuff is mindblowing at all. It’s about time that they make Siri somewhat useful.

A couple times when I watch Apple vids on YT, I hear my HomePod talking away to itself in the other room. Eventually I realised it was because of the YT vids saying si’ri, so yeah, thanks for the edits! Love it. Lot’s of cool stuff here, we’ll see what actually lands in Sept.
I've been super excited for these upgrades ! as a new again iPhone user after many years on android , one thing I've been missing badly is the better virtual assistant, and much better voice transcription and voice typing that pixel phones have. Hopefully the ai upgrades and siri upgrades this year will include better voice typing like pixel !

It is interesting how “AI” has now become an umbrella term for many different fields ranging from data science to machine learning to image processing, etc. in the media.
How would LLM based Siri work with their switch to on-device Siri? Wouldn't that take away the assurance of security that comes from knowing no information would be leaving the device during Siri requests? Or would they display an indicator for off-device Siri similar to the ones for camera and microphone operation?

Love it! By the way, Siri on HomePod Mini very very rarely activates when I’m speaking about her in conversation. She can usually distinguish between a command and being referenced in conversation.
That is true but not all speakers are updated and get activated. We just do it to not annoy people =)

HUGS sounds like the ML supporting it can segment the point clouds' depth (aka the 3D forms of people), mask them out the way stickers works, while object tracking the video movement

All others have been doing this before. That's why Siri is the most primitive. Apple only follows those that revolutionise smartPhones, unlike iPhones.

I'm thrilled to check out the new AI features, but I hope Apple doesn't limit most of the features for older iPhones, claiming that only the iPhone 16 series (with an upgraded neural engine) is capable of running them.

Wow, that’s all very exciting. Isn’t it just like Apple to enter a market where everyone else is making gimmicks, and actually make nice quality of life features? Still, I do hope to see things like AI enhancement of photos like googles, magic, editor, and something like circle to search would be nice as well
I've been playing around with 'Pi' lately, it's nothing short of incredible and if Siri matches (or exceeds) this, not to mention the functional integrational capability it could offer, then I think a whole new horizon will arrive for iOS.
I listen to audio books and msic when I jog. But almost always, when I say "Siri, play [I name an item in my music library]" Siri can't find it. I could be looking right at it on my iPhone. But when I'm jogging, this means I need to stop and mess around with my iPhone to find and start the music manually. If I'm not wearing my reading glasses--I''m usually not--I'm out of luck. I hope this uber-upgrade targets little failures like this.

None of that sounded useful, other than the ability to replace a tool that I already have (Bing chat / Chat GPT 4) with Siri, who I can access with my voice instead of the usual bookmark I have to click on, and, I suppose, the xCode assistant could prove useful. Though, I currently do not know what xCode is and have no idea when I plan on learning about it (as a studying developer).

Apple has always been using A.I. - the issue is in the implementation and a companies front facing use which includes machine learning which works behind the scenes in camera, photo and video editing. There are different types and the most thought of version is the language learning model but yes most could care less just give us useful working tools
‘On Device’ needs to include all HomePods / AppleTV / Watch (all gen’s with neural engine chips) and advance smart home / CarPlay capabilities as well as iPhone (iPad / Mac)! On devices already shipped!
They should add phone call screening like google does

Good point just like VR people tend to feel silly and uncomfortable using it, and just like VR in most cases its actually more awkward to use. Typing on a keyboard is easier than using Siri, because a Keyboard affords you time to think before you write, and correct any mistakes. where as voice control you kind of have to get it right first time.
The brand "Siri" is less than worthless. Apple needs to stop beating that dead horse. If Apple called it ANYTHING else people might look into it. Call it Siri and no one will even try it. It would be like Microsoft INSISTING on calling AI "Bob" instead of Copilot. What stubborn marketing fool is behind trying to prop up the collapsed and despised "Siri" brand? Can't they put Apple's crack team of pot-smoking marketing dudes on the problem of how to dump Siri?

To be honest, I much prefer Siri than Google Assistant. I only use it for basic stuff like setting an alarm, or creating a note or reminder. These things, which I actually use, just work. Googles Assistant got this basic stuff wrong or with typos in my notes etc so many times it really frustrated me. Much prefer Siri to just do the stuff she does well, than have Google Assistant do everything but in a crappy way. Does anyone have any thoughts on that? Would love to hear your opinion in this :)

Can’t say for sure with Ajax, but “SIRI” is a strictly “Apple” service, just as “Cortana” is set its parent company…so, yes…Siri will only be on the iPhone.

During iOS 15.x.x, as a rideshare driver…every time I said in a regular low toned voice, “hey….” to anyone who was named “Steven” (or similar name), Siri would activate, yet I practically had to yell “hey siri” when trying to actually activate it. Had to change the voice too (to the Australian male voice), as the female voice kept sounding like it was complaining or being condescending. Lol.
I would love to have AI-feature that would allow users to take a picture of food and it would gestimate the caloric intake if eaten.
siri used to be the most advanced voice app of any smartphone, but since progress is slow, sometimes you have to just sit back and analyse the market.

I think the biggest opportunity that Apple faces is to finally make voice to text a reality. The error rate should be reduced to zero when making the conversion. More advanced function, such as asking the AI voice interpreter to change the first word in the third paragraph from, for example, competitive to collaborative, Would cement Apple’s leadership.
I dunno. I use Siri all the time. It takes time to train it though. Looking forward to something far more robust.
You forgot to mention the 15 dollar monthly subscription that will shortly follow the release of these AI features.
I understand bleeping the word "Siri" but if you set your Siri to listen for just "Hey Siri" it will not respond to the word "Siri" when spoken alone. It will need both words. And maybe the improved Siri will be able to make better distinctions, like only responding to your voice instead of voices of others.

honestly i hope that iOS 18 has a lot of features, especially after iOS 17 was a pretty disappointing release. Then I hope iOS 18.1 is like a slight optimization update, and iOS 19 has no new features, but works on optimization, specifically fixing slight lag in animations more than battery life tbh

Will they be compatible with the special features that he was referring to that will only be available on the iPhone 16, which will make people to upgrade. Im sure the iPad will follow the following year where you need to upgrade again for those special features.

I can’t be the only one who couldn’t care less about AI. In fact, I’m sick of seeing it everywhere. If it makes Siri better, cool, but it’s things like Google AI being shoved in my face when I try to do a simple Google search and Microsoft making a Copilot keyboard key. I hope Apple’s implementation won’t be as intrusive. All I care about are the actual feature additions and improvements in iOS 18. If AI enhances a few things behind the scenes, that’s fine but I don’t want to see it in my face like so many current implementations are.
I just have to laugh at the people that think a computer is going to make their lives so much better. Same folks that have to check to see if siri locked the door on their phone from ten steps away.

Exactly. If AI can improve Siri that’s fine but don’t pretend it’s the next best thing since sliced bread. Companies are always trying to make voice assistants seem more important than they are, like a solution looking for a problem. The fact is, for many people they’re an afterthought, a seldom used gimmick. The only time I really use Siri is for hands-free use while driving and it already seems to work well enough for that. I get that it’s more useful for some than others, such a people with disabilities, but I’m just tired of the AI hype. Just make it a footnote in the change log and focus on more useful features and additions, not AI gimmicks.
No way 200 billion perameter model on device , even m1 pro versions. 14 billion model size can be fit best on under 32gb ram desktop and 2 billion size on mobile can be good to go but it will be very tight.
