  • I just finished reading the book this movie is based on and I am not sure why the movie did this change but in the book, the writer clearly states that the girl Hervé meets in Japan didn't have oriental eyes and that means she wasn't Japanese or Chinese, later as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that she was European! I feel like this detail made a very important part of the story.

    • Moral of the story, women weren't so oppressed historically as feminists shove it in our throats. Maybe women couldn't vote, but film shows that women ruled the social life at large, having great currency of power in forwarding someones career or ruining someone. It makes everyone dependent on them.

    • It's Hollywood's imperialist colonizer's agenda back then. You can't show a white woman with foreign men. It has to be a white man conquering the foreigner's woman. Sexualizing and exoticifying Asian women while desexualizing and emasculating Asian men.

    • Would you agree it's quite a realistic approach though? I mean, the movie never fails to affirm how much love Michael pitt's character holds for his wife. But love happens. One step at a time too, which was so familiar and relatable. You don't fall into the wrong with on decision. It's baby steps. He was intending to tell his wife everything. But couldn't bear it; he wanted everything normal. His mind stayed with the girl, and it wasn't something he could control anymore

She lifted herself out of that unhappiness and became a great independent young woman. Kathrin and Meghan are the beneficiaries of that.

    • I personally liked it. Many emotions were explored throughout, and the acting is top notch. I think the main things that are bothering people here is that they didn't credit the Japanese actress and that the movie is sort of glorifying cheating. I'm not so sure about the last part. The man, I can't spell his name, delivered by Michael pitt, is a trader. He works with people from different countries; like Japan. They have their own traditions. He adores his wife at home, but in order to complete the agreement and ensures his and the purchases' safety, he needed to have a sexual incident with someone during his travels. He did loved a girl there too. Was actually quite crazy about her. She was too. But he still stayed with his beloved wife, till her very last day. He grieved her death like no other. I like the movie. I'm not sure about you, but I hope you enjoy it. And I hope this was helpful. Also, very sorry for any grammar mistake. I wrote this while in a hurry and didn't edit it
