In Gaza Protest, Columbia Students Occupy Hamilton Hall, Site of Historic 1968 Takeover
Support our work: www.democracynow.org/donate?c...
Columbia University students began occupying Hamilton Hall shortly after midnight Tuesday as the university moved to suspend students who joined Gaza solidarity protests, and renamed it Hind's Hall, after Hind Rajab, a 6-year-old Palestinian girl killed by Israeli soldiers in Gaza in January. We look at how it was 56 years ago today, on April 30, 1968, that the hall was also the site of the historic student occupation by students who renamed the building "Nat Turner Hall at Malcolm X University." We feature an archival newsreel about the 1968 occupation and our interviews with campus activists on the 40th anniversary of the action about how they were protesting Columbia's connections to the military-industrial complex and racist development policies in Harlem.

Back in 1968, I was a fat and self-conscious 13 year old who just wasn't aware of this event. The shooting of students at Kent State University did wake me up to the fact that my government was something to be feared. Since then, I was directed to the truth by a friend who annually visited Damascus, Syria to teach at the American University there. So, I've been pro-Palestinian for many years. I knew that things were getting worse and worse prior to October 7. The genocidal actions of the Zionist state were not surprising knowing what I knew already. But, the continued support of my corrupt US government revealed what I had just felt for years. Though I'll probably upset some fellow Americans here, I say with conviction that our government is a Fascist imperialistic oligarchy which puts big money over its citizens. I hope that the young people will not forget this and continue the struggle to finally make the US by the people and for the people. It never has been. And, it's about time that we live up to our Constitution.

Stop genocide 😢
Let's stop redefining words first.
The IDF is doing just that now, you clown by ending Hamas.
Agreed. This genocide, apartheid and blockade must stop.
That is what Israel is doing and why so many are getting triggered.
@@user-xu5vl5th9n You think that killing 0.2 % of a people's civilian population (behind which fighters are hiding) as collateral damage is a "genocide"? Do you want to mock the victims of real genocides? Or are you just a Natzi who wants to kill all Jews?
Stop Genocide and brutal occupation.

I never knew Juan Gonzalez was such a hero.
All the hate being displayed in Gaza, to genuinely believe that you're a chosen people and that gives you the right to commit genocide against an entire people, to drive them from their homes, commit absolute atrocities, and to further believe you're doing "God's work", is truly infuriating, heartbreaking, and shameful. That shame should be carried by anyone believing, justifying, and funding these war crimes. This MUST stop!
Zionists aren’t really very devout je ws. They don’t believe in the Torah as much as they believe in leveraging its social power to own Isr ael. They aren’t zealots, they’re just sociopaths who pretend to be zealots because religious justifications sound better than admitting that they like har ming Pale stinians for fun and for money.
Of course
Stop your antiemetic propaganda brainwashed hatred. You are part of the reason Biden will lose this election and Trump will win. You are so ignorant, and spread what so many now believe, you will elect Trump. I'm happy to say I've left the left. You are hypocrites to the max.
Those atrocities go back to 1948 and even before by the Western Zionists. 1967 was another horror show, now totally forgotten by the brainwashed who think that all started by Hamas on Oct 7th 2024. Teh Sixties were tumultuous but many good seeds for humanity were sown then. i supported the students in Columbia with thoughts. Worked 40 hrs a week while going to college at night. but without the internet those seeds soon went dormant and were not watered, instead were trampled on with greed, power and corruption. They are resurfacing again now, it just depends if they get smashed and bulldozed over again by the powerful. both parties support the Zionist Israeli government and many posters on both left and Right news outlets smear the university protests as being terrorists. Even Pelosi told them to "Go back to China" what the heck?
Exactly. Well said.

The students and protesters in 1968 became the fat rich cats in the board rooms of all the nations. These protesters will too.

The power of these protests should not be underestimated, dismissed, or villified. To STOP THE GENOCIDE, nothing else is left but protest. Great episode.

You’re amazing Juan. That’s one heck of a legacy.
The same people who protested the Vietnam War now fly the Ukrainian flag to show solidarity and support NATO. It doesn’t take a genius to look at the patterns of the US and NATO to make the immediate assumption that a lie is being told, war crimes committed, and the entire endeavor was manipulated to reach a financial goal. The degree of effort to sell the Ukraine war was unprecedented in my life time. The difference with the Israel/Palestinian conflict is that it has gone on for so long that a thoughtful person regardless of how naive they want to be can be presented with a long series of facts in regards to what has really happened over the years. I am glad there are protests. What those who fly the Ukrainian flag refuse to acknowledge is that the operation is just another genocide, this time through conscription of the natives, “fight to the last Ukrainian”, and a Blackrock land grab. The result will be a depopulated Ukraine owned by corporate investor firms. It is a new operation Barbarossa committed against the Ukrainian people.

But they are not saying that at all. They picked a side in a war and that has nothing to do with peace.
@skippygotrobbed ohh so you support land reparations for indigenous peoples? What 40ish states do you think the American people should relinquish control of to the indigenous peoples? Also do you think if like Israel they allowed indigenous peoples from around the globe to immigrate there and displaced Americans to house them there would be no violence? There is only one non hypocritical position in this conflict as an American.
@@Ashley-wi4ng There can only be peace or war. Why does the possibility of peace make you need to fight? If you are committed to war at all costs, I'm not sure there is any common ground for us to meet on. You really seem to need to engage in conflict. You cannot imagine that I am not on one side or the other. Why? I want peace for everyone. I'm not on either side, as much as that might go against everything you believe in. Because choosing a hill to fight and die on will never result in peace, only self-serving bs. You are trying to engage me in a petty war of words because I am speaking up for peace, not war. Sad.

Occupying in the name of anti-occupation. This all will end as fruitful as "occupying Wall St".

Hopefully everyone is safe. The passion is understandable but conflict very complex, it has roots that span to even ancient history. A more comprehensive understanding of the issue would lend itself to a more effective message and movement. As opposed to fanning the flames of discord and unrest. That is what the authoritarian regimes that act as instigators want, to destabilize free democracies. They don't want a movement that applies focused pressure to those who can actually effect change and begin to diminish barriers to effective diplomacy. Young one's, you already have the worlds attention now, when you make voices heard, do so peacefully and speak to those who don't. You also have minds with amazing potential, use it to it's fullest potential that's more effective, that way when speak you can be heard. Not give it over to our baser insticts, it will be less effective. Let's be clear this would NOT be better under trump, he doesn't care about Palestinians. Remember the Muslim bans trump called for? The root cause of the conflict is not Biden or the current administration. 'So what is the root cause?' Good question. I already know, but you have to find out. It's not a mystery or a riddle, VOTE BLUE 💙!!!

Frustrated with my country’s complicity and my generation’s indifference or active support of the zionist state. I am a Christian. Not of the radical evangelical variety. All three grew up to be principled adults who wouldn’t hesitate to speak up against racism any prejudice or injustice. I would say to people of my generation please listen to your children, if you don’t understand or agree with their stance, ask them to explain. They are our hope. Mathew 9:26 27 (King James version): Jesus said “Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not." : : "There are none so blind as those who will not see.
