  • Try a tip over axle one without the chassis rails tri axle ones when up only have the back axle on the ground and two rails supporting the body they make you scratch you head when tipping lime or gypsum .

  • Must say I was a little nervous, artic tipper, rough ground, pulling forward. OK if he was not long loaded, but if any of that salt had settled towards solid, and some remained in the front, instant disaster. Been there and, nearly, done that. ;-)

    • Sorry for the late reply I’ve not done much tipper work but really want to get into it more. I know if your one never ground and the weight stays at the top you could tip but how else is he meant to tip this load of he isn’t meant to be on rough ground? I’m not being funny I’m just eager to learn.

    • @@Redtop1989 I assume that this 'one never ground' is a typo for 'on level ground' and, if so, there is only one way to be sure and that is when you see or suspect that the load is sticking at the front/top is to drop the body and get inside with a shovel and loosen it. If on rough ground even more so. I said before I had nearly done that and the reason I have never done it is because I followed my own advice above. But I worked at a firm which used 20 foot trailers and there was never a problem, then when they introduced some 30 foot ones several went over on their sides, so that made me extra careful. The fault was partly due to a lack of chassis strengthening at the base of the ram but also I am sure, because of over confidence due to the stability of the 20 footers.

    • @@davidmarkersnr.1888 yeah sorry about that typo. It explains a lot. I’ve just watched a video where it states it’s the loaders responsibilty also to try and make sure the load is even if they are loading it with a loader but obviously the drivers responsible if loaded under a hopper type of loader. Which leads to a question. If the lid is uneven would you pull up at the designated areas and get on top and shovel the load level before driving off to ensure your safe to tip at your destination? Sorry I have been driving for a few years just not this type of work and in my new job I transport plant machinery as well as started doing tipper work. I’ve only driven rigid tippers however I do have my class 1 and I could in future drive those which is why I’m asking questions

    • @@Redtop1989 Although a good loader with a machine should load the product evenly, ultimately it is always the driver's responsibility to make sure, even if only to respect legal axle weights. So that means doing it before you leave the site and join public roads. With artic tippers it is useful to know what type of delivery situation presents itself. If from a level concrete pad directly into a hopper, as long as there isn't a strong crosswind, it is pretty straightforward, but if you are tipping onto the ground which means rolling forward while the body is raised, as in the video here, extreme care must be taken. I have been retired over 17 years now and even before that it was many years since I drove tippers, rigids or artics, so at that time artics were more unstable having 2 less axles to support the sideloads imposed upon a long high vehicle. But even now, with tri-axle trailers and 6 wheel units, I would take extra care after seeing what I have seen. Best of luck with your endeavours, but I am not sorry I don't have to it again myself. ;-)
