On March 26, 2012, Ocean frontier explorer and Academy Award winning filmmaker James Cameron plunged 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) below the ocean surface in a one-man submarine to the Challenger Deep in the Pacific Ocean’s Mariana Trench, the first solo diver to reach such depths. On “Journey to the Deep” the 2013 Nierenberg Prize recipient shares his experiences and perspectives from his record-setting dive. [8/2013] [Show ID: 25110]

  • One thing I appreciate about James Cameron is his respect and intelligence enough to do this expedition the right way and put safety first. He did not let his ambition get the best of him like the experts at Ocean Gate. James used his own money and did not endanger other people's lives unnecessarily.

  • NOT THE FIRST ! This was done by two insanely brave men in 1960 - Trieste was the first manned vessel to have reached the bottom of Challenger DeepThe Trieste is a Swiss-designed, Italian-built deep-diving research bathyscaphe ("deep boat") with a crew of two, which reached a record maximum depth of about 10,911 metres (35,797 ft), in the deepest known part of the Earth's oceans, the Challenger Deep, in the Mariana Trench near Guam, on 23 January 1960, crewed by Jacques Piccard (son of the boat's designer Auguste Piccard) and U.S. Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh achieving the goal of Project Nekton. .

Cool to see how our oceans looked back in the 70s and 80s !! Or maybe sad to see how they look today. because it is not that long ago. stay safe 😷👍🏼

  • I like James Cameron but sometimes I want cuss him out whenever titanic comes on tv and my old lady insists on watching it every single time ...like maybe if she watches it enough the titanic might just miss that ice berg at some point. But then I remember it's not James Cameron's fault she likes to watch the same damn movies over and over again. I eventually found away to enjoy seeing her watch it for the 1500th time by telling her that if that were us on titanic I would not hold her hand until I froze to death like di caprio ....i always tell her I'd steal her life jacket and push her over the side before she could snitch on me lol

  • It's just a shame Mr Cameron didn't get involved with ocean gate, or at least offer his advice, probably would have been ignored unfortunately 🙄

  • James Cameron would never approve nor sign anything until it is rigorously tested and certified when it comes to any unknown exploration, deep dive or space, which proper and right way to go. Ocean Gate did everything completely opposite in order to achieve some kind of imaginary "first place" in innovation, while it was complete stupidity to allow such an experimental submersible to operate for regular paying customers. Thx for sharing this vid!
