Journey to the Deep with James Cameron - Nierenberg Prize 2013
On March 26, 2012, Ocean frontier explorer and Academy Award winning filmmaker James Cameron plunged 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) below the ocean surface in a one-man submarine to the Challenger Deep in the Pacific Ocean’s Mariana Trench, the first solo diver to reach such depths. On “Journey to the Deep” the 2013 Nierenberg Prize recipient shares his experiences and perspectives from his record-setting dive. [8/2013] [Show ID: 25110]

One thing I appreciate about James Cameron is his respect and intelligence enough to do this expedition the right way and put safety first. He did not let his ambition get the best of him like the experts at Ocean Gate. James used his own money and did not endanger other people's lives unnecessarily.
You forgot to put quotation marks around "experts"
@@mikemyers3403 yeah so called lol. the one smart one was fired for telling them the titan wasnt safe
Also Richard Branson was trying to beat Jim to the challenger depths in the same faulty carbon fiber tech that the Titan was made of and Jim straight up told them “you or someone is going to die if you go forward with this”
And you know why ? Cause Jim was a diver himself , that CEO of ocean gate was not , just a woke white man ….
He's a genius. Everything he does he does well, better than well.
This thing went SO much deeper than the Titan. James Cameron chose the right company to do exploring with.
Our prime minister sank a lot deeper.
Our prime minister sank a lot deeper.
That's why James his wife loves him so much
This may be nearly a decade old, but as a man with a passion for the seas and the history of various sea vessels, I now have even more respect for James Cameron.
Much respect to James Cameron. He did his research, respected the dangers of the deep sea and with his team, built a vehicle twice as strong. Getting to the bottom of the ocean and returning safely is an engineering feat.
It's exactly 7 miles from my house to the nearest grocery store and I use that reference distance to continually amaze myself about Mr. Cameron's dive. Wow! That's deep.
Wow, 7 miles nearest store? Is that normal in USA im courious, in my country is 50 m average
@@bruno2331 I live out in the desert. Closer in there are stores everywhere.
James Cameron doesn't do what James Cameron does for James Cameron. James Cameron does what James Cameron does because he is, James Cameron.
His name is James (James!) Cameron Explorer of the seas With a dying thirst to be the first It's him! (could it be?) James Cameron!
xXTheLastFa11enAnge1 Jaaaaaaames Cameron the bravest pioneer...........
jon skinner no budget too steep, no sea too deep! Who's that? It's HIM! James Cameeerrrrooon!
***** On the other hand he did make aliens and terminator 2. so he has found, and continues, to raise the bar.
+jon skinner and he made the abyss which is a top favorite of mine + Titanic which he also went down personally and video recorded the Titanic in person and avatar. haven't seen a movie yet I didn't like.
James Cameron .. great man ...congratulations ...You deserve all the awards you get, your intelligence and desire for exploration and discoveries lead you to excellence through creativity. Thank you very much, what an enlightening interview.
Mr Cameron is brilliant ! ❤ big round of applause for the pioneer of deep sea exploration.
"Science should be respected" James Cameron is very wise in his words
James is a legend. I remember watching the Titanic as a kid. The guy who made that amazing movie laid his eyes on the actual ship over 30 times. Unbelievable. Just as amazing of a movie director as he is a fearless explorer and risk taker.
Jaaaames Cameron..explorer of the Sea..he surely raised the bar..great work!
I really don't care what his "hidden motivations" were or how much money he has. I know two things he has for sure: one is a potent spirit of adventure, and two is unflagging courage. I know how much anxiety I'd feel slowly descending to the deepest part of the ocean, alone into absolute darkness with unimaginable deep water pressure bearing down on my untried little deep sea diving submarine.
+Greg Nixon well said indeed
+h irving That's really unnecessary.
real manly of you mexico..and really showing your high degree of intelligence..i imagine you are a welcome guest in all of the right places...
Greg Nixon Great honest and correct comment sir. Nice to see one like that once in a while on here
Greg Nixon id go and smoke weed in the sub 35000 ft
This is Absolutely Amazing! I’m here from the Disaster Oceangate guy who half assed everything, smh.
To think he could have died down there, risking his life for something he loves is a very manly virtue, good on you James!
The man was set for life, it showed true passion, what a legend
The guys life insurance companies must have been shittin their britches haha this dudes worth a LOT of money.
"manly virtue" guess you're american 😂😂🤣
@@Nezumi66 British pal. Don't make assumptions 🤣
@@daltonbailey1 why do u think it's a manly virtue considering the immense pressure down there. Do you think a guy is less manly if he feels scared at just the thought of going down there
This is beautiful footage and dedication, I am so amazed because this voyage was a treasure to us all and sea life.
Very well deserved....he is amazing for sharing his passion for this incredible adventures that are impossible for any other person in this world would ever experience!
Thanks for raising the bar Jim.

This is the proper way of deep diving, not what Ocean Gate's Titan! I am astonished what an excellent and knowledgeable explorer James Cameron is besides top notch film director! Incredibly talented and valuable person worth every penny, respect!
Outstanding you tube and presentation! Congrats to Mr. Cameron and the teams that elevate exploration and science of the ocean!
Thank you for raising the bar Mr. Cameron.
Great and fantastic human endeavour to spend one's fortune doing! Fantastic people to donate their fortune to reward and support public interests like this! Restores one's faith in mankind absolutely! Thanks!
Brilliant film ty James for doing this and sharing the experience with all of us... blessings James and ty for being you int his world... mgf

HAAAAA
cant imagine the horror and fear of going down there alone! what a feat from james this is. really awesome!!!
Great presentation. Amazing accomplishment.
wow! my respect to this man.
Omg i love me some james i just got goosebumps just seen this
I think he understands that it's odd we know more about our moon, but we really don't know anything about our own oceans? And to take that passion and sense of adventure and turn that into a life's work is very impressive. Kids take notice! Let this be your admiration
The moon is easier to see once you get close. And there's fuck all on the moon. So they should spend a lot more time in the oceans.

NOT THE FIRST ! This was done by two insanely brave men in 1960 - Trieste was the first manned vessel to have reached the bottom of Challenger DeepThe Trieste is a Swiss-designed, Italian-built deep-diving research bathyscaphe ("deep boat") with a crew of two, which reached a record maximum depth of about 10,911 metres (35,797 ft), in the deepest known part of the Earth's oceans, the Challenger Deep, in the Mariana Trench near Guam, on 23 January 1960, crewed by Jacques Piccard (son of the boat's designer Auguste Piccard) and U.S. Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh achieving the goal of Project Nekton. .
We can all Google. But he was the 1st to do it solo. Can only tell people to see the dok about the Trieste, and if you still can buy a copy of the series made by Jacques-Yves Cousteau - the UnderSea World. Cool to see how our oceans looked back in the 70s and 80s !! Or maybe sad to see how they look today. because it is not that long ago. stay safe 😷👍🏼
Earlier this year Victor Viscovo became the first to summit Mount Everest and submerge to the lowest point in the ocean. And the hits keep coming.
I Strongly suggest skipping this one completely, it’s no documentary. it’s about Cameron and some others who seem to want their 10 min of fame
Saved my time Thankuu
From directing Piranha 2, to this chicken skeleton expedition - Cameron has come full circle.
this is amazing
This is amazing.
Here because of the OceanGate.
Duke #Marine #Megafauna explanation of James Cameron expedition lecture Week 6, for the win! I wanted to learn more about the submersibles and the deep sea ecosystems and I wasn't disappointed. Thanks UCTV!
I wish James Cameron would explore the Place where the Bloop, the Upsweep, the Train, Or The Julia sounds were heard.
He could produce classic pieces of art and then he becomes an engineer and talks like an engineer, sounds crazy sometimes when you watch his movies and then his scientific side of things. This man is crazy.
You mean crazy brilliant!
James would have been the perfect choice as director for the movie The Meg. He's made The Abyss, is an overall great director and is very much like the character from the Meg novel.
Wow that's BEAUTIFUL..Really appreciate the work done behind the scenes to make this happen, James. Great Effort. It's on par with Niel Armstrong's moon landing, without a doubt!! Best Wishes 👆👍🎉👉16:52
Jaques Piccard and Don Walsh did this in 1960. This is tourist stage stuff nowadays, like climbing Everest.
A wonderful program! And thank you for this! But what's with those enormous chairs!! :P
Steven Spielberg where ya at boi
I think James Cameron is the greatest of them all.
How many other people have went down this deep rabbit hole watching sub videos after the titan disaster
Yeah Mr. Cameron! Yeah science!
Cameron really out there for Avatar 2 😭♥️
James Cameron is awesome.
Came after ocean gate incident
Deep tour of 12k meter to reach Titanic was failed .. but this man reached 35k meter deep ... the guts he has🙇..
What are you talking about? Titanic: 3.800 meters Mariana Trench: 11.000 meters And the difference is, he got the money for it

Going to the moon is already been Concorde, so I’m of to discover our deep sea. JC you are a real life Rambo.
I’m doing a school project about this and I hope it helps me😬
James Cameron should make a movie 🎥 about the Lusitania, he pick the characters similar to Jack and Rose scenario 🌹 . That would be excellent coming from him. What a guy 🌹💐👍 Kudos from Alaska. What a beautifully designed Neon green submersible 💚💚💚❤️
I'm here after the 5 billionaires turned to fish feed after they paid quarter mil dollar to get that full experience of the titanic ship
2 billionaires*
And one of the passengers was a young man who was only 19. He only went because his dad pressured him into going and he didn't want to disappoint him on fathers day, trully tragic
Came here to watch this after Ocean Gate’s Titan sub implosion.
Thanks to Auguste and Jacques Piccard...
Raise the bar
I like when he says that Abyss is his third film :)
Fabrice D* Ahh yea he done that piranha film?

big deal, I've dived to the bottom of my pool with zero help.
Irish Nurhd 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
What sorts mysteries did you descover (lol)

James Cameron! Science!! YEAH BITCH!!!
wow
How big a deal is James Cameron and what he achieved here? Well, he's the ONLY person EVER to have a Rolex specifically designed and named in his honour! Not Paul Newman, not Steve McQueen no-one else, ever! The dude has balls of steel and a grasp of technical shit that most of us couldn't fathom (pardon the pun) after 20 years in college! Diss this guy and you expose your own limitations!
+Douglas Morton That's actually not correct. Don Walsh (the first man to reach Challenger Deep) in 1960 had a Rolex designed for him by Rolex (GMT Master) as an award for his accomplishment.
That's intriguing, who has heard of Mr Walsh though and GMT Master doesn't exactly cry out that it was named in honour of one person....
52 years before. fifty two years. thing about that
@douglasmorton632 Rolex made a milli and vanilli watch. Not really a high honor.
All I got is he's a genius. He must have a huge brain!
Show! Don't tell! A film maker of these accolades should never need reminding of that!
+The Creepy Night Shift Guy This was sort of a boring speech aswell because he's basically just talking about people he know.
You really have to wonder what guarantees, or at least makes the odds in the favor that the Challenger sub will hit the bottom and not tilt over. The ocean floor could have had some tilt to it or objects. Is the sub bottom weighted? It's such a narrow thing one wonders about the odds of it not tilting over after hitting the floor of the ocean....
Was thinking the same thing! Would love to know the answer... truly mind blowing
If you have nothing to look at! look at the real documentary! The IMAX one I think! A wonderful one!!
Computer problem somehow reminds me of the 1202 alarm on Apollo 11.

Next goal, dive in a sub to the ocean floor beneath the ice on Europa :-)
Deepest man alive James Cameron
Not true actually. Victor Vescovo is with his DSV Limiting Factor. He barely beat James in the same area but a little deeper
No budget too steep, no ocean too deep.. who's that? OH IT'S ME.. James Camerooonnnnnnnn
if I had the money I'd do the exact same thing. would spend my life searching the depths. I'll go to the Challenger deep. unless any exploration companies are checking these comments plz get a hold of me for a guy who's willing to push the limits.
I just watched the full movie and they never mentioned how long it took to reach the bottom
I serched it and it says that it took 90 minutes
Nasar Ali 150meters per minute. Just figure out how deep the thing was.
Notice how the Russian Mir -2 isn't getting any love even though James Cameron used it to safely dive to the Titanic?
Awesome ~}[]{
I heard Idris Elba is playing James Cameron in the Netflix adaptation.
I like James Cameron but sometimes I want cuss him out whenever titanic comes on tv and my old lady insists on watching it every single time ...like maybe if she watches it enough the titanic might just miss that ice berg at some point. But then I remember it's not James Cameron's fault she likes to watch the same damn movies over and over again. I eventually found away to enjoy seeing her watch it for the 1500th time by telling her that if that were us on titanic I would not hold her hand until I froze to death like di caprio ....i always tell her I'd steal her life jacket and push her over the side before she could snitch on me lol
Video freezez so frustrating...

It's just a shame Mr Cameron didn't get involved with ocean gate, or at least offer his advice, probably would have been ignored unfortunately 🙄
open the door and have a little swim around :3
Has anyone actually seen the footage of the bottom of trench??
radicalronin I know I e never seen it either , how strange
Ocean Gate's Titan disaster brought me here.
James Cameron would never approve nor sign anything until it is rigorously tested and certified when it comes to any unknown exploration, deep dive or space, which proper and right way to go. Ocean Gate did everything completely opposite in order to achieve some kind of imaginary "first place" in innovation, while it was complete stupidity to allow such an experimental submersible to operate for regular paying customers. Thx for sharing this vid!
