  • A few movie trailers in and predicting a massive amount of flops.

  • The third batch of 2024 movie trailers I've seen on this channel, and so far, I'm not particularly impressed, though the previous batch didn't seem as dire as the first one, so maybe there's some hope for this batch. Let's see! Disclaimer: I'm biased more towards niche genre films, especially horror and sci-fi, and will go much easier on those than, say, general drama, romance, comedy, and the like. "New Life" - I think this is the third time I've seen this trailer, and it still doesn't leave me excited to see this movie, even if it seems like there's a small chance it would actually be something I might enjoy. Maybe the movie will be OK, but for me, this is a Trailer Failure! "Boy Kills World" - I don't know, this sort of thing on paper shouldn't really appeal to me, but there's something about the trailer that actually works for me somehow. Bravo! I usually watch movies alone, but I might give this a try if anyone I know is interested in watching it with me. "Lazareth" - Somehow, I end up watching lots of these post-apocalyptic dramas even though I don't really think I'm crazy about them, and this one looks like more of the same. It's got a soundtrack-bait Song and an actress that even I recognize attached to it, so I'm guessing there's a bigger budget attached to it than usual for this sort of thing, which is weird- a vanity project for the actress, perhaps? Whatever - maybe I'll catch it on a free movie channel some day late at night and realize halfway through it "oh, now I remember seeing the trailer, that's why bits of it seem familiar!" Maybe I'll even enjoy it. But, I don't really think I'll look forward to it, and I certainly won't credit the trailer for any anticipation I do end up feeling for seeing it. "Jade" - HA HA HA! Oh wow, looks like we've got at least TWO '70s exploitation throw-back films this year, along with "Snatched". Well, OK, then... this one looks like the more honest of the two about its cinematic lineage, and it's not my thing at all; the trailer doesn't help it any eitherl, and I'm really surprised to see this genre fall back into fashion after getting the stink-eye for being politically incorrect for the last 40 years, BUT whatever - I don't harbor it any ill-will. It's just really weird to see two of these films this year! Unlike... "Planet of the Apes..." - did the series of '70s films (and accompanying TV show) really NEED to be rebooted for the 21st century? I kinda feel like there's an alternate universe somewhere, where "Soylent Green: Part 15", "The Omega Man 24", or "Deathrace 2000: 37" or "Westworld Part 42: Return to the Planet of the West Worlds" fills this film's role. And in this case, the social commentary seems like a bit of an odd fit for the Current Thing, and I kind of feel like the film-makers have been flying on autopilot with these movies for years, if not decades... I'm not even sure if they understood where the original books, movies, and TV show were coming from. Whatever the case, the trailer looks competent enough, the CGI effects are effective enough, and I doubt this sequel will do anything to sink a franchise that has stayed afloat this long, but I present Exhibit A in the case of the Viewing Public vs. Hollywood Sequelitis.... "Alien: Romulus" - Oh, and there's Exhibit B, right on cue! OK, I'm one of the... what, six? people who actually LIKED "Prometheus", and I'm willing to give this movie a chance, even if the follow-up entry in this creaky film series fell a bit flat for me, and given most of the competition this year I might even be looking forward to it a bit, against my better judgement, BUT, I still feel ambivalent about seeing a trailer for yet another alien sequel, right here alongside that "Planet of the Apes" sequel's trailer, and no doubt another fistful of cautious, by-the-books sci-fi sequels (I know you're out there, Mad Max, Godzilla, and Marvel comic movie sequels, and I'm betting you're not alone! Selling this Alien sequel on the "strength" of being made by the guy who brought us an Evil Dead... sequel? Prequel? Reboot? Remake? doesn't help, either: "Coming soon: reheated leftovers, by the chef who brought you some reheated leftovers a few years ago!") I probably won't pay to see this, even if it turns out to be pretty good.... "Wake Up" - Oh, look: it's "Don't Breathe", with the serial numbers filed off! I didn't mind that movie, but I don't really feel excited to see it again. The novelty wears off, you know? "Cuckoo" - Well, far out: the first non-sequel trailer that I actually feel interested in following up with by seeing the movie! I hope they don't let me down when I see it.... "The King Tide" - Well, double-far out: another non-sequel trailer that I actually feel interested in! Again, I hope they don't let me down. "The Last Stop in Yuma County" - Well, three for three, and it's not even one of my favorite genres this time! The trailer reminds me of the sort of suspense thing that Alfred Hitchcock used to excel at, and as long as they don't stray too far from Hitchcock's playbook here, I'm sure this movie will work out just fine. I think I'll give it a try! "Poolman" - I kinda get some reheated "Big Lebowski" vibes here, and I'm just not feeling it. Next. "Arcadian" - A claustrophobic post-apocalyptic sci-fi horror move starring Nicolas Cage, who never fails to look half-crazy in everything he does? OK, sign me up! Actually, I already saw it a couple days ago and... well, it was OK, but felt like sort of a low-budget knockoff of "A Quiet Place" or one of the "Cloverfield" movies. Mostly harmless, and even has a few unique little charms of its own, but it's not really going to stand out on any list of top-ten movies of this sort. "Civil War" - I didn't know this existed until I saw a couple mini-reviews from viewers who saw the movie , in response to a trailer in one of the other batches I saw tonight which agreed unanimously that this movie was terrible. Maybe it is, maybe it's not - I sometimes find such unanimously negative reviews to be wildly off from my own impression on seeing a movie, but this trailer failure does nothing to convince me I'll like it much better than anyone else. Looks like it's aiming for being a "Red Dawn" for the 2020s, without any of the goofy charm of that '80s cult classic. "The Image of You" - Oh, look: a serial-numbers-filed-off de-make of "Fatal Attraction". No, thank you. "Blood for Dust" - Maybe it's an OK movie, but it's not my genre, and the trailer does nothing for me. "Bloodline Killer" - Looks like a slasher movie taking itself a little too seriously? No, thank you. Don't get me wrong, I loved the original "Halloween", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", and "Psycho", but this trailer is not selling me on this movie, and I doubt the movie itself can change my mind at all.... "Jeanne Du Barry" - Johnny Depp starring in a period drama? Weird. Not weird enough to interest me, though - next. "Bambi: The Reckoning" - Seriously? Weird, but this sort of "Evil Bong" or "Sharknado" humor is probably never going to be my taste in weird. I don't know, maybe morbid rubbernecker curiosity will get the better of me, and I might tune in on a free movie channel one day to see if it's even worse than I expect, and maybe even crosses that line twice into "so bad it's good" territory? I'm skeptical.... So, there you have it: 2024, not as bad so far as I feared, maybe a step or two up from last year, but it still looks kinda dire from where I'm sitting. "Alien: Romulus", "Last Stop in Yuma County", "Cuckoo", and maybe "The King Tide" might even have a movie or two between them that I might be willing to pay to see at home, though probably not drag me to a theater.. There's a couple movies that might be OK, but their trailers aren't doing them any favors where I'm concerned, far too many sequels, far too many entries here that seem suspiciously similar to better-looking movies from the past, and a couple real stinkers, if the trailers are anything to go by. 2024's trailers in general are not giving me the warm-and-fuzzies!
