Charles Oliveira vs Dustin Poirier was a fantastic fight that ended in a swift submission, but how did Oliveira set the body lock up? Why was Dustin so eager for the knockout? Where do they go from here?

Crazy to think that the only one who completed 3 rounds with Oliveira at lightweight was Tony Ferguson
Khabib would destroy Oliveira 😎😎
Yeah but like you said, Olivera could've broken Tony's arm in the third after the triangle choke. He just choose not to as an act of kindness
Yes Tony is fucking though and very good, Khabib was lucky that he didnt fought him, also dont forget he is kinda old now :/ and Oliveira is beast

It absolutely amazes me how fearless he is
I just wish he would take less damage.
Look at where bro came from, almost nothing, people like this are built different and I have seen it personally💯💯straight killer
I can see the killer instinct in his eyes and I love it.

@@jameslee8670 How? Khabib takes him down and gets submitted. If Charles gets a guillotine like Dustin did against khabib it's over buddy. Khabib doesn't have the power to combat Oliveira and if he takes him down it's probably over.

Man Oliveira really showing his fight iq. That muay thai training has really come in clutch and using aspects of it to counter/disrupt the opponent's style.
The one thing I hate about Oliveira is his head movement is literally nonexistent and it seems like he gets hit with everything his opponent throws at his face.... so cringe to watch. But he's on a roll now and its working as of late, so congrats to the brotha for a nice W.
@@artofmartialcinemaamc5334 Yeah, he's gonna have to get Ronda Rousey's coach to help him move his head so that Gaethje doesn't take it off his shoulders

@@lalchungnungaralte9104 I have been watching Oliveira for quite some time now, and I do NOT share your optimism in any way regarding the "HEAD MOVEMENT!!!!" Lmao, that's one area he'll never improve in. He is a former Amateur Muay Thai competitor and has over 40 MMA fights, so if he's not "comfortable" with head movement by now, I doubt he'll ever be. But hey, ever since he got a new coach he has been looking better and better as a fighter overall, so anything is possible. I'm not saying he can't, I just have any reason to think he will until he shows it. I literally cannot recall him ever slipping a punch on its own without ducking under it for a clinch or takedown....
Saw this coming all day. Glad to see Oliveira prove the doubters wrong, and get a chance to fight Gaethje
I honestly don't think Gaejthe deserves it. What's up with this recent shtick that whenever someone loses a championship fight, they get 1 win and then another title shot.... now if Oliveira wants to fight SOON again and not wait for Dariush/Makhachev, Gaejthe is the default fight. Othereise Justin should rematch Dustin for a title shot.
Yeah yeah, you did.

Chandler's never been submitted in his entire career, which is incredible if you really think about it.
Just awesome to see a guy who quit on himself multiple times in the past, gather himself, beat all his demons and become a fucking no quit warrior. Congrats to Olives!👏

There was an angle where after Charles took the back, he first took care of Dustin's arm that was planted on the floor. Before he got the arm under the chin, he was also busy fighting Dustin's hands. Man, it just seemed so methodical - step by step. Beautiful.
rapisor Man has the most submissions in UFC history for a reason.
I love that we have a champ who has zero connection to Khabib's reign and has beaten the guy who many thought was heir apparent to the division. Yeah, his striking defence isn't the best, but he is very well rounded, especially for a submission specialist, and he knows what to do against someone like Dustin. Very few people have beaten Poirier at lightweight. Michael Johnson back when MJ was a serious fighter and before Dustin made all his boxing improvements, Khabib, and now Oliveira. Dustin has a champ's resume fighting all the big names, and Oliveira is one of the few to finish him.
I bet Khabib didn't want to fight Oliveira... he couldn't stick to the cage and smash him. Oliveira could cause Nurmagomedov a pretty nightmare I think...

Very impressed by how Oliveira used the clinch to affect Dustin's striking. After a few clinches and knees, Dustin adapted to defending the clinch. He did so by keeping his hands out and using them to chop away Oliveira's clinch attempts, and he was successful for a moment, but this disrupted his flow and affected the amount of power he was able to load up. Beautiful strategy from Oliveira. He fought the perfect fight. And MASSIVE props to Dustin for surviving those elbows 😬

To those complaining about the glove grab, are we gonna disqualify every fighter who does minor infraction of the rules? If that is the case, every eye pokes should end the fight as the other fighter gained an unfair advantage. Groin shots? Nope that is an advantage, fight must end now because it is unfair. Ohh accidental headbut? Nah man that is unfair to the other fighter so DQ. UFC used to be "There is only one rule, there is no rules!" Herb was there, and he did not see it. It was not significant enough to be called. Why do we want to cuddle fighters instead of letting them bang? What then if Charles got DQ? All of MMA would complain that Dustin is just a paper champion, and he did not won the fight, like what happened in the Sterling vs Yann fight.
Your right on most of that but I'm intrigued if glove grabs we're illegal back in the day . Like you could throw 6 hooks to the balls but could you grab shorts and gloves
No-one would be disqualified for grabbing the gloves. The points will be reduced but not directly disqualified. Herb Dean should have warned olivera but didn't. Herb Dean keep making the same mistake again and again and let's fighter grab the gloves
They dont even do anything about eyepokes is so bull5shit. Dc stole the belt from stipe with eyepokes
Poirier said nothing happened, there is nothing here to discuss.
Definitely not disqualified but the fight should have been stood up there. Oliveira may still have won but he may not have. What we do know is that foul directly led to the win
Ppl wrote Charles off like he was just a placeholder for Dustin’s belt… I’m happy for mr. olives!
Charles is something else, something newer than before. It's like he takes attributes from everyone he fights. He stole Tony's chin durability, Michael Chandler's freak athleticism, and now Dustin Poirier's heart. He just keeps getting better with each fight.

The glove hood is 100% why Dustin was as gassed as he was in the 3rd. I was sooo mad
It wasn’t the multiple knees and kicks straight to his body in round 1? Stfu and keep coping
I really don’t think Charlies intention was to grab the glove there. My thought was that he realized it was in there and then instantly shifted to grab the side of the wrist. Dustin, as shown in the Conor fight, would’ve instantly reacted to the grabbing of the glove and didn’t mention it at all post fight
If you want toi grab the wrists like you do in nogi, with these kind of gloves, you kind of always looking like youre grabbing the glove
Maybe cuz Dustin didn't realise? What a stupid comment. Watch that shit in slow Mo. His knuckles was perpendicular to Dustin's arm. That's not how u grab wrist. That's a lot shit of rationalisation. Charles cheated to win. Like a scumbag. That ain't changing.

A few things with the grappling werent accurate in this breakdown. Firstly we can’t really tell if his fingers were in the gloves or not. He could have just been grabbing the wrist. You’d be surprised how hard it is to pull your arm out of triangles and omaplatas against jiu jitsu guys as there legs are also really tight around your arm. Also Dustin didn’t just randomly decide to roll over. Charles forced him to by putting pressure on his shoulder (through the omoplata). He didn’t really have a choice so its more of a sweep really.

Don't know about a crown or a belt, but he is good at wearing other peoples arms around his neck, getting choked.
Well that's what happens when you fight a cheater. Charles was going to get finished if it wasn't for that egregious glove grab. Wicked breakdown dude. You didn't really cover much of round 2, the absolute grind olivera was putting on poirer in that closed guard was insane, the forearm to throat pressure and hands over the mouth followed by heavy bows. Completely throttled poirer's spirit.
Ya you could see his will fading while he was just smothering his face
Did the same thing glover did his last fight with that dirty grinding grappling
Lets be honest he only had that position because when Dustin went to yank his arm out, Oliveira grabbed his glove which stopped Dustin’s arm with his elbow right over Charles’s leg which is super dangerous, herb never calls it so Dustin attempts to roll and that gets him stuck on the bottom. @ben esterberg well you can clearly see the grab. Whether it changed anything except tossed 2nd round we'll never know.
@@r6201sk Well clearly it didn’t, Oliveira took Dustin’s back in the 3rd based on a pattern he found in the 1st. Dustin just got sloppy 🤷
@@r6201sk Fighters are willing to fight through eye pokes and groin shots. It does not seem like Charles grabbed the gloved intentionally, as there was not much arm there to grab (he had his legs squeezing Dustin's arm). Herb did not call it. There are rules, but it is still cage fighting. In the heat of the fight during a scramble, Charles was grabbing what he could of that arm.
Charles Oliveira was the underdog against Kevin Lee, was the underdog against Tony, against Chandler and Dustin, And he will be the underdog against Justin, Islam, Dariush, Conor, CM Punk...etc. Time to put some respect on his name
He was actually the favorite against Chandler
He was the betting favorite against Tony and Chandler you bum. If you're going to spend your entire existence commenting on KZhead, at least know what you are talking about. Broke and Dumb are not a good combination.
He never ever will fight Conor,or lets say Conor never ever will fight Charles
I’m tired of seeing your terrible takes in every mma comment section. Take a hint dude it’s not to late to get a new account and start ova
@@12345Yeah He wasn't the betting favorite against Tony.
Great breakdown as usual! Could you please do a breakdown of doms fight against Pedro, that would be awsome
You nailed it!
If weasle doesn’t point out and breakdown the wrist grab that allowed to put Dustin in a exposed position, I’ll be convinced I was the only one that think that cheating was important to the result of the fight.
Its a big nothing burger. Watching the fights without commentary i didn’t even notice it it was that small
Getting locked down in guard off the glove grab drained Dustin… Seemed like Charles’ determination was super human… With who Dustin has already fought and the way division is stacked… to get back to another shot looks daunting…. (Islam,Dariush, etc.) Charles stole all the shine with that performance… Damn he’s dangerous!
Love your breakdowns!
You are by far the most educated snd well rounded commentator on this sport man, thank you so much for your contribution to this community.
Poirier needs a win to get his confidence back…let him fight Conor again
😂😂
I have heard people say that heart is like KO power some people have it and some do not, it can be improved but not created; I am not sure if I fully agree with this notion but Charles' current makes think that a good deal of his previous issues were mostly related to that horrendous weight cut he had to make to be at 145, whatever the case no one can say he is a quitter, what a career has had, 11 years fighting some of the best fighters of two very deep divisions.
He had a bad case of arthritis when he was younger. You can still see the effects of it on his body (his calf’s to be more specific). He was halfway paralyzed from the Max fight at featherweight due to those health issues. But there’s no denying he’s overcome that physical disadvantage. And the lower weight cut has def helped him tremendously
dudeeeeeee.... amazing breakdown...
You called it in your pre fight video about Poirer pulling back leaving the hips exposed.. well done Weasle!
I thought Dustin was too one-dimensional on his attacks. He didn't even utilize leg kicks or mix it up, this in my opinion ultimately cost him the fight since he became so predictable. Oliveira vs Justin would be very interesting, as Justin has the defensive wrestling and the variety of strikes to keep the fight diverse in terms of attacks.
I’m waiting for that Nunes breakdown lol
So Olives secured a top mount by grabbing Dustin's gloves and took his soul in the process.
Great breakdown and analysis i love watchimg these it really shows you each technique and the reason for using it. Dustin could comback and get the win weve seen him do it before but charles is definetly a worthy champ who deserves it. 💪🙌Great fight. 2 great fighters. I think if these fought ten times it would be different result every time. Charles technique is so nice to watch he is like a wizard in there. He just glides about, his shots are straight down the pipe. feet always under him, High tight gaurd, and pulls his gaurd back right after shots and in combinations, beautiful shot selection, always in control of his own thoughts and doesnt do anything out of panic, He causes guys to panic because they cant fall back on anything because hes so well rounded and they do what he doesnt and they act unordinary, Probably one of my favourite champs ive seen throughout history not one weakness.
I think taking that money fight on Conor is a mistake on Dustin's part. He should've just went on to the title early he probably be a champion right now and then went to Conor's money fights after so that way he wouldn't worry chasing the title sine
But whose to say Conor would've still been around to fight Dustin again? Exactly Conor could've fought som1 else lost or took another hiatus. That's why he took the Conor fight again for that reason. There's no guarantee that he would've fought Conor again. He might've not gotten another chance to do so and Conor's star power is going down each time he loses. So him skipping the trilogy would've been a dumb idea financially.
He got 2 money fights with Conor, and also has the 3rd one secure in the bag that they can pull that out any time in future. Also, fighting with Oliviera back then didn't guarantee he would win too, so, I would say it's not really a mistake if his first priority was the money.
He actually only got 1 money fight. The first fight against Conor didn't bring him any more money than he normally gets because he did not have the leverage to negotiate for it. Conor saying that fighting him is a red panty night only applies to champions and people under altered special contracts. You need to get a piece of that PPV pie if you wanna make it a real money fight. So the 2nd fight was about legacy and the 3rd was about money.
Was
The “fools gold” comment didn’t age well. Dustin looks foolish
In lead up to this fight dustin said that is his fight with khabib , he was impatient n ended up giving his neck whereas he could have just he could have taken some ground n pound lose the round n carrying on fighting in the later rounds , that's y I think he stayed on the ground in the 2nd round n ofcourse Charles wasn't going to let him escape
Difference here is charles very much is slicker then khabib in bjj and it showed dustin made no mistske this time.
Great breakdown man, too bad you can't send your videos to these fighter's trainers it seems like they could use them sometimes! I wanted Dustin to win this fight but I knew Charles would beat him, styles make fights and Charles jujitsu was too much for Dustin just as I suspected. I do think Justin has the best shot out of all of the lightweights at beating Charles but I think I still give the slight edge to Charles in that one too, he's really found his fight rhythm!
Nice analysis!
