With that in mind, have you ever wondered which car would be the best to buy to ensure you don't lose too much money when you try to sell it on in a few years? Well, we have, so we made this video!

    • Yep. Nobody is going to pay 60% after 3 years on an already replaced 4 cylinder diesel Defender. Hell you get >20% discount at the dealer if you push it for one with 5 miles on it.

  • Much of this data is highly speculative, given that many of these cars are new on the market. Projected estimates of value are... well... just that.

    • Also the value of the car after 3 years is only applicable if you are buying the car from your pcp dealer. It would be less if trying to sell this privately or part ex with another dealer.

  • Cool to see how values are different from one country to the other. In North America, a Jeep Wrangler is holding its value like crazy. Followed very closely by any Subaru you can find, especially the Crosstrek. Winters drive the AWD cars way up, here. The CX-30 is holding its value like in UK, however. Maybe a tad more in North America, especially in Canada.

    • Extrapolation - Depreciation is a factor of a percentage drop, year on year. Eg. 100 x 0.86 (14% drop) = 86 86 x 0.86 (same %) = 73.96 73.96 x 0.86 = 63.6

    • @@nathanielshaw5460 the optional payment figure is itself an estimation of depreciation, you may be in positive or negative equity come the end of the term if depreciation is better or worse than estimated.

    • They are going off the data provided to them and in the case of new launched cars, it's a highly complex algorithm that will project values to a high degree of accuracy. Without this, the manufacturers would have no way of knowing how to compute the PCP finance deals as without an accurate residual value to work to, it would be impossible to set the monthly repayment figures.

  • When the Macan first came out i was expecting it to drop in value like most high end SUVs and was keen on buying one used. But the cheapest one i ever saw was $50,000 and it had like 90,000 miles. The CPO ones are still in the $60,000 - $70,000 range unlike the BMW X3 or Mercedes GLC where CPO ones can be picked up for $30,000. Its def something I'd buy in the future, my then co-worker bought one when it was first released and said it was very reliable.

    • Typically more popular models will flood the second hand market in greater numbers, so....Buy a good but not so popular car, or from a company that had manufacturing issues to keep up with initial demand with a niche market for best value retention I guess. Think VW Beetle or the first BMW owned Mini. For a while you could sell second hand for basically the same as new. Or if you keep and maintain them for over one hundred years......Maybe our alien overlords will like the Nissan Juke and its design will finally have made sense.

  • Model 3's are holding their value way better than suggested here. 1.5 year old models are only 5k off purchase price on autotrader. This is for long range models with the standard range falling more but will certainly better than 60% after 3 years. 80%+ for a long range can be expected and 70% for a standard range.

    • When you buy a car on finance, after 3 years you can pay the final payment or return the car - they give that final value price at the time of negotiation, so you can use that as an estimate

  • Just an idea for a video. The cheapest way to have transportation for lets say 3 years. So maybe a honda jazz, buy then sell, or maybe a toyota yaris lease? Would be interesting. Include running costs as well. Like service, insurance, fuel, etc. How cheap can you get a new car driving experience.

  • Those resales are based on forecourt values or retail selling price, most people buying new cars and trading them in after 3 years are most likely going to trade them in for another new one in which case you won't get anywhere near the forecourt value. This if you bought the car for cash might be somewhat different if bought on PCP.

  • Well, back in 2017 did I find fully kitted out dacia cars from 2014 in sweden for a price of £1300 or there about. That is a 90% depreciation over 3 years. They are doing quite a lot better nowerdays
