Learn all of the materials involved in sketching and drawing and also some basic shading techniques and sketching concepts.
In this video, I start off going through all of the materials you're going to need for learning to sketch and draw. Once you have a better understanding of those, you can start drawing simple shapes and lines and practicing sketching with an HB, B, or 2B pencil. These are good pencils for sketching lightly but also allow you to go a little darker when needed for shading. I plan to cover perspective, values, edges, shading techniques, proportions, landscapes and many other topics of sketching and drawing for beginners and intermediate artists.

The whole perfectionist mentality is what was holding me back for sure. Once I got it into my head that nothing is perfect, and that my sketches and drawings evolve over the course of creating them, I found I became a lot more able to create things from my mind onto the paper. Thanks for the guide, I owe you a beer!
Much appreciated! Glad to hear that :) I've realized over the years that one of the biggest problems for learning to draw isn't technical ability, it's mindset haha. Have fun with it my friend. I don't drink but I'll drink something different :)
“It doesn’t HAVE to be PERFECT” “Get rid of the perfectionist mentality, get into training mode.” “Play around, have fun. Don’t stress, do your best.”(Schaefer, How to Draw, video #1) THE best advice. I appreciate you, brother.
Yes, THE best advice. Brandon Schaefer is THE teacher I’ve been looking for since I finally decided to try and learn to do something I never thought I could do. This IS going to be fun & I AM going to learn to draw! Yay!!
Shawn Daniels ~ to me, not amazing advice. for some people, like me, we can’t get rid or our perfectionist mentality. we can’t just not get mad and stressed.
Why do i have to think about Bob Ross? :D
I agree. I’ve been learning how to sketch in China by a Chinese woman who is an absolute perfectionist. It’s making me crazy! I don’t think I’m gonna waste anymore money with her.
Ye as a kid when i used to draw I would always sketch like this and then i'd get upset with myself because it looked messy. Then i gave up. So hear I am again realizing this is how you're supposed to be doing it xd
Anyone else get a random burst of inspiration at almost 3:00am and felt like learning how to draw?

Absolutely brilliant. That one piece of advice ‘don’t commit’ has transformed my thinking. I’m 55 and have always thought I couldn’t draw because my art teacher at school said so. I just drew a circle with shading and shadow and it’s made me so happy! Will definitely be drawing everything in my house and looking forward to the next in the series.
Awesome :) Glad to hear it! Have fun with it.
I just commented about this. I just sketched something with that thought in mind, and I was blown away at how good it looks.
I never even thought about not committing to the basic outline at the beginning. Just this one little thing has given me a lot more confidence in being able to improve my drawing ability. Thank you!
It literally CHANGED my entire understanding of drawing. I always committed to my lines and it always came out looking cartoonish. This tutorial is a god sent
"get rid of the perfectionism mentality" this line is gonna save my life. thanks!
It is a great line! I'm trying to apply to my whole life, not just drawing!
Agreed. Most underrated comment here. I am going to make that quote the next thing I draw. With some funky background. Been wanting to draw an enchanted forest for a while now...
It's taken me 3 days to even get pencil to paper... This is gonna be rough.

After several years of leaving my passion for drawing, here I am, an 18-year-old who's trying to restore his passion. It's so hard for me to go back to drawing after I have been rejected when I was in 6th grade. I was so easily discouraged. Yes, I still know how to draw but there's a feeling inside me that I was left behind. I want to start over again and learn the basics, yet it really is hard to start something. Planning to finish this whole series, watching your other vids about color and stuffs and hoping I could bring back my passion for drawing :) Btw, this tutorial vids are cool. Very beginner friendly
Just draw for yourself, no one else. And enjoy it.

Thank you for bringing this lesson down to the utmost beginner level. I am 64 years old and am starting to learn to draw. i’ve been drawing for 5 years but i decided to come back to the basics for a refresher. i feel as i got deeper into art i happened to forget what i learned in the very beginning. some things stuck better than others. it never hurts to come back and relearn some more:)
Whenever I asked other artists how do I get better at drawing, one of the worst pieces of advice I've been given was "Just draw/just practice" Well, I've been "just drawing" for about ten years and I'm still at an amateur level. What I meant was HOW do you practice? What techniques do you incorporate? What are the steps? To me, it's just a condescending way of saying "Figure it out on your own."
Read drawing books, go to the library if possible. No need to even buy books. Read them, draw everything in them. Draw your surroundings. Learn to render form and light through shading - put the techniques in said books to use. Start from simple objects and build to complex. If you did anything else for 10 years, do you think you'd improve? It seems you should start evaluating what you're doing and try different things to solve the problem. Find ways to solve the problem. The internet is an amazing resource for books, videos, articles and all kinds of things on drawing. I'm sure you can use this to your advantage. I hope it goes well and you find what you're looking for. To be honest, this is my method, I did all of these things I mentioned above including drawing from life and my surroundings.
@@SchaeferArt I appreciate your advice. And I'll do my best
There is not a clear way at all. That's why they say "just practice". You need to find what you suck at first. It may be perspective, values or rendering. Read about the topic that's the most hard for you and just practice that, NOTHING ELSE. Then when you're decent at that fundamental, switch it up for another. The fundamentals of drawing are like a wheel, you keep rotating them and going back to them.
SchaeferArt what is the best approach to help a 6 year old who loves to draw?! The school has an after school art program but it’s really pricey so I’m looking into other ways I can nurture this ability!
@@MercyAlwyz23 The local library is amazing for that. Some libraries even let you sign up for free. And maybe draw along with your child too, they will love that.
My teachers never told me how to draw, specially the arts teacher, she always assumed that I know how to draw. Here I am struggling to make a fucking comic from 0 in 48 hours. "Don't be commited" is the best piece of advice I've ever heard. Wnen I wanted to learn to draw a year ago or so, I watched some russian tutorial (I'm from Ukraine), and the first thing they said that needs to be learned is to draw a decent circle. The way they presented it was so that you must commit it. I drew few dozens of circles, could not feel the improvement and gave up on that. Now you say to do the very opposite thing, and I drav a decent circle on my first attempt. The first thing I needed to learn was to scetch stuff, not to make commited lines. This is incredible. Thank you for making this masterpiece.
I think there's a place and a time, but you have to be more confident to commit. And to be confident you need a lot of practice and failing and trying etc.. HOpe that makes sense.
Thanks for this! I've wanted to learn to draw for a long time, I'm someone who loves learning new skills all the time and learning to draw is actually a bucket list item for me. I'm a professional photographer, strangely I can't draw to save my life but I have the eye so I'm convinced I can train myself into it :) There are a lot of concepts in visual arts that I'm already familiar with bc of my line of work so I hope it won't be overwhelming

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I've always wanted to learn how to draw, but I stopped doing it a few years ago. You gave me the courage to pick up a pencil and practice. Yesterday, I ended up drawing a harp (using a decoration I have on my desk as a reference). It turned out really good considering it's my first time and I had a lot of fun. You have a new subscriber!
My notes: 1. Don't be committed... draw multiple lines and darken the most appropriate shape. 2. Its not gonna be perfect when you draw it the first time... so do not commit. 3.Find the light source and how many light sources , where is light coming from... that will help you make the sketch 3D.... making shadows. 4.make the arrow from light source. 5.Get rid of the perfectionist mentality and get into training mode.
Thanks for sharing these, probably helpful for a lot of people :)

@@princess7jasmine art, animation and graphic designing are booming in demand.
a freaking art class for free😭😭❤️❤️
Freedom!
Thank you 😭💖
coming to this tutorial 9 years after upoad. thank you, this is something ive always wanted to better myself at and ill be binging your videos
I've been drawing stuff on my own for many years, never had any kind of "training". So far this stuff is easy and comes naturally to me.
It’s amazing that this video is still helping people after 7 years
*Videomaker says: don't stress and just have fun* *You start stressing and realising what disapointment you are* :)
Saloejka not to mention the non understandable : make sure you ... and then it's all out of understanding.

me in a nutshell
"what a disappointment"
I’m the definition of how to fuck up a perfect oppprt called life.
Just wanna say that his voice is incredibly reassuring and really gets me motivated to draw and to be okay with the inevitable fact that its okay to mess up.
Even a simplified fast sketch to make a point is brimming with depth and life. I feel the same childish intrigue to learn more as the first time i'd seen a magic trick. Looking forward to further improve my skills with your videos :)
Anyone else starting over from the basics?
M too.. Starting frm cypher.. After Med school i can draw my thoughts...
Elnlightening...
I am just a beginner so yeah summer is pretty boring for as I don't have anything to do so I thought why not learn how to draw.
Used to draw alot when I was younger. I was really great at it, but then I stopped as I got older. Started focusing on a career, starting a family ect. Lately though, my creativity been coming back and I've been doodling more, especially since my daughter has stumbled upon my old sketch pad. She's been drawing more too. So going back to the basics.
Me because my spark of creativity just came to me i still improved but i felt like i never went over the basics it just got to me and i realized that weakness (realized i suck) so i want to start over
him: *talking about what you need* me: *here with my pencil and sketch book ready to draw knowing I’m going to mess up: 👁👄👁*
Wait you actually have a pencil? I draw with a pen
Messing up is part of the learning process. And it is often fun :D
The more you fail my friend the more you learn and the more you become successful
I draw with drawing tablet but I suck
@@williamdawhaleshorts8053 We all suck, it's alright.
Incredible!! Been wanting to learn since I was a child and always thought you had to basically be a natural at it. It's beautiful to see the science of it, as a programmer I love the componentization of each stroke and how it contributes to the overall picture or vision. Going to start sketching everything in my house lol
Hey man. Just wanted to say thank you for this series. It helped a lot in getting started. Drawing can be scary if you're in the wrong headspace and this made it easy.
I've always used different forms of art as an expression of myself my whole life. A couple years ago, after several medical problems, I had a stroke. I was only 48. I've been terrified to begin again for fear of what I might not remember. This online tutorial was amazingly effective at getting me back to holding my tools. Also, assuming I know nothing, I don't have to feel stupid if I can't remember something I learned in freshman art. Thank you for a place to begin again.
If your drawing doesnt looks good, remember that. "Every line you draw, wasnt a waste. It only makes you better and lets you improve."
Finally a good video with advice and a good tutorial! I've been trying to find something like this. Even though it was created 8 years ago, it is still great!
I came back to drawing after years of losing my passion, I'm so happy and I'm gonna start learning again. Thank you so much for this tutorial I'll love you forever
Awesome, have fun :)

"It doesn't have to be perfect, get rid of the perfectionist mentality"... I have replayed that line more than 20 times.. It still hasn't sunk in. xD

@@pad1944 You can imagine how powerful it is for that many people to repeat it that many times! You can imagine how many peole '' PERFECTION" has stopped. These words are powerful , These words are transformating lives ! Not just in drawing.
its more videos and people like this that we need in the world really enjoy wish this dude the best
Thank you for saying it doesn’t have to be perfect, to mess around and play with everything, and don’t stress if it isn’t. So needed to hear that.
It's all about enjoying the process, learning more, and having fun!
[Sees comments about transition at 7 min mark] Me: pffft it's just a video transition [7 minute mark arrives] Me: whAt EvEn Is rEAlIty

Well get used to seeing me around your comment sections. I got a long road ahead and lots of questions when I get the materials ready. Thank you for actually explain this. Seems like one of the hardest parts of starting is even knowing where to start or what to even learn.
+Sir Saki Right you are.
11 months later, any progress?
ItachiShakur_ Made some progress here and there. I've been working on the basics for the longest time, mostly drawing from the shoulder, and getting down basic shapes. Not gonna lie, I've been hoping off and on over the 11 months since I posted this. If I'd done to working every day I'd be MUCH farther along.
Sir Saki tomorrow im gonna go buy a sketchbook and some pencils, should i just work on sketching shapes first?
I suggest learning to draw lines and curves and at lest one or two sketches daily. When I practice, I try to do at least 2 hours of practice and I'm proud to say that I've been able to do that pretty well. And if there's anything I can say that I've been able to actually pick up, its having fun drawing for the first time with what I try to sketch. Before I'd just get upset but now I can smile and laugh as I learn. So yeah. Sketches, line practice and maybe pick up some pins as well, And I recommend going to drawabox.com. That's where I've been going for a while now.
I started watching this series because I really want to improve. I wouldn't say that I am horrible, like I know the basics and I hope that I learn some good techniques and tips. So far it is great! Also with digital art becoming popular nowadays it would be good if you made a video on digital art. Anyway it is a great series:)
Thank you, hope it goes well. This video and series isn't that great to be honest. I have better videos on my channel now.
Watching this transported me to my freshman art class all over again. Trying to pick it back up. Thanks
