Gold Mafia - Episode 1 - The Laundry Service I Al Jazeera Investigations

2024 ж. 13 Мам.
6 159 345 Рет қаралды

Undercover reporters pose as gangsters with up to a billion dollars of black money that need to be cleaned. They gain remarkable access to members of Africa’s Gold Mafia and film closed door meetings with crime bosses.
A senior African ambassador offers to launder $1.2 million using the cover of his diplomatic bag.
Criminals offer lucrative deals to clean over $100 million through government gold export schemes. At the centre of it their operations is southern Africa’s biggest laundromat, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.
Gold Mafia, a four-part series by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit looks at how society’s obsession with gold underwrites a global shadow economy. The undercover team infiltrates the rival gangs that turn dirty cash into gold, which is then sold around the world.
Through thousands of confidential documents and exclusive interviews with whistleblowers from within the criminal organisations, investigators obtain the blueprints of billion-dollar money laundering operations that service the political elite. And the investigation leads to the highest offices of southern Africa.

    • The illiteracy in the comment section is disheartening. when a country is sanctioned, they have to resort to other means to sell and bring foreign currency into the reserve bank. When Iran was sanction and could not sell its oil, Norwegian and Greek smugglers were brought in to smuggle the oil out of the country and bring in money to run the country. How do you expect Zimbabwe to sell its gold when it is sanctioned? The investigation does not show that the money is going into the ambassadors pocket or the president's pockets. yes the smugglers are stealing from the government but to talk of corruption when the government is only trying to sell its gold and bring money to the reserve bank shows that many African commenting in the comment section below are illiterates. they simply do not know how the world works. Zimbabwe has to sell its gold and smuggling is the only way and that is not corruption as it is not going into private pockets. the guilty here are the smugglers who are exploiting the situation to steal from the government. Lets see what the remaining episodes hold.

  • Not that long ago I've been doing research about gold producer in the world. The biggest 3rd is Switzerland, UK, and Hongkong. Then I dug deeper to where this three countries get their gold from (because you know, there's no way Switzerland, UK, or HK own their gold mine). But they tend to ship their gold to one another (for example Switzerland get it from HK, UK gets from Russia and Switzerland) but Hongkong gold majority came from UAE. Then at last, I finally get to find their major supplies, which is came from DRC, Ghana, Uganda, Mali, SA. I'm glad you cover this story. Just kinda sad we can only see it but can't make differences.

  • This documentary is a thorn to the heart. To also think the late SB Moyo was a shareholder of one these gold smuggling companies and his then wife now widow is the head of the Anti corruption Commission in Zimbabwe. The syndicate runs sooo deep then. It's just painful😖😖

I'm very heartbroken to see these heartless people enriching themselves by exploiting poor Zimbabweans and Africans in general. Thank you Ajzeera for this documentary that exposes such evil activities, please don't stop here, help Africa prosecute these evil people.

  • The Western sanctions on Zimbabwe are contributors to the problem. As a South African, I believe the same is happening here. Africa is a very rich continent but the ordinary people dont benefit from the mineral wealth. Very good documentary.

I remember when we were kids he orchestrated a big scam called the 'goldenberg scandal' that cause Kenya to lose an equivalent to 10% of our GDP then. It's heartbreaking to see that he's still free to mastermind other scams all over Africa thanks to our weak systems
