using shapes to define a character? yeah phineas and ferb did that to the extreme.
XD
I mean you're not wrong. I've never seen a single episode, but just from memes and the occasional clip I know that Phineas is the "schemer" always coming up with some crazy idea for how to have fun over the Summer, and likewise Ferb is a bit of a stoic who's always there to see things through. Their designs sell who they are really well.

One thing I would like to add, a good character design works in basically EVERY art style, not only in a single one, using that certain color palette, those clothes, that body type, and even the size comparison with other character in the universe, just watch at some The Simpsons intros, they change the art in a lot of them to things completely different and redesigning all character for fit in that art style, but even then that base for the character is still recognisable and tell what you need to know about the character.

One of the character design mistakes (I believe) are stereotypical anime face. If all of the characters have the same face shape, it would be hard to vary them. The reason why I like JBA and other old animes they have varieties of faces and identity. If anime faces varied, you can make all the characters memorable.
You're right. Animes like JJBA, One Piece, Demon slayer, etc has one of the best character designs in anime. Because the designs defines it personality traits while still maintaining it's distinct look.
There are also character designs that have this same face syndrome but can be depicted through their hair, which is possible to differentiate personality in a glance if done properly
Great opinion
The eyes. The eyes can totally make or break a character design. You can’t really put cute baby eyes on a reserved, introverted, cold guy and make it make sense.

I think it's funny in the case for Evangelion where Shinji's design is very simple but he manages to stick out perfectly.
That's part of what makes him so great. He's not a stylized or over the top character like most anime protagonists. He's just a kid in way over his head and everything about him reflects that. His lack of visual flair makes him stand out against the more vibrant designs of characters like Misato, Rei, Asuka and even Gendo with his iconic pose. He looks like a normal person surrounded by anime characters. Even comparing him to someone like Light from Death Note, Shinji never gets those moments of visual flair and stylization that accompany Light's more powerful moments. Both look like normal people but Shinji is treated as mundane visually. The story wouldn't work if he was anything else.
matching him to the fucking nuts environment of Evangelion in world full of colour he is black and white :)
Same with Akame ga kill
That's a sign of a great design. The Persona series has some really great design, especially in 5, where everyone can simultaneously blend into a crowd, yet unique enough to easily stand out to us.

In my opinion Good character design is a design that compliments the personality of the character. For example when I first sore Bakugo first thing I thought is he an delinquent
Why getting spoiled about a character's personality by his character design is good ?
@@user-hq4iv9we1t because it makes them incredibly recognizable
Well, it depends on what type of show you are going for. If you are going for much action, characters with standing out design work, because you can't really mix them and you get to know them even in fight scenes
@@Parrooo But why something easily recognizable is necessarily good ? That means if a charadesign doesn't reflect the character personality is bad ?
@@user-hq4iv9we1t because if you don't have a good visual memory, you may confuse with who the characters are, especially if there are two of them that look similar. Also, a good design makes the character more "special", along with their personality. Cuz while the personality makes the character's decisions, the design, as we said, makes their recognizability.
Dang, I wish I'd watched this earlier before designing a bunch of characters. My character design strategy was 'Make the cool guys look cool'.
Crazy Boris Productions There are two kinds of people; the people who do this, and liars.
Some of the designs I've seen of yours sort of actually fit what's described here, even if not intentionally. Take, say, Ocho and Apophis from Dungeon Dynamite. Ocho (is that how it's spelt?) looks like he'd be confident, care about his appearance and try to be the star of the show. Apophis fits the shape geometry decently as well, being very square to suggest the reliability and rounded edges, which fit to his more quiet and supporting role. This shape logic could be applied to Euler as well. In short, claim credit for good character design and run for the hills.
i've got no complaints about the characters, soo.... yeah. You keep doing you
Yours do communicate. The mark of good character designers is when you can convey the messages without intended to. If your mind can just feel the characters as they are, your doing it right
I was thinking to make the characters looks good, have possibly good persenality, and fit when placed together

when designing characters I like to follow an 80/20 rule, where 80% of the character's design makes sense and tells a story, and if I want, I can use that last 20% just to add flair and style that may not mean anything. Usually though, I chose something that seems in character for the person I've just created, so at least it still ties in and now you know this kid really like bugs or space or cats, etc.
This is good advice.
80/20 for main characters and a 70/30 for side characters. 👍

I've always admired attack on titan for having very clear character distinctions without using bizarre details like hair and eye colors
yinny I love AOT
Now that you mention it, AOT does have very distinct characters
AoT is good at making variations of body shapes and faces. for examples, Annie and Hanji have aquiline noses which is quite rare in anime, and i find them appealing and unique at the same time
But then we have Nifa, but nobody talks about Nifa...
That was one of the first things I noticed in AoT! In so much anime the characters have the exact same faces, and their hair and eye color are the only way you can tell them apart. In Attack on Titan, the characters all have unique features
as a high school drama student, we have to consider character design a lot in terms of costume, make up etc, and justify them, and from what i've gathered, i'm not necessarily the best at drama, but a good character design is memorable, it's eye catching, it's different, and it has to symbolise something that the character stands for, whether thats a personality trait, a theme behind the character, what their motivations are etc. all these things must be took into consideration when making a character design
I feel like people dont apreciate enough the character design of edward eleric, fmab/fma. Its absolutely wonderful how not only you get to see him age and grow more mature and learn throughout his journey, you can also realise how his style changed when he got rid of the bright red coat, the shiny pants and the big boots making him stand out in a world where everyone prefers to wear desaturated color to slowly as he matures giving up on the attention he wanted and focusing on other more important things. I love fma/fmab's perspective of time and how the characters evolve with it
One aspect of character design you didn't mention which I think can be used to really interesting effect is posture. Some really good examples of this are Griffith from Berserk (always regal with a raised chin, open solders and and arched back) or Spike from Cowboy Bebop (slouched with eyes peering up and hunched, closed shoulders). What's interesting about this to me is how it's one of the elements of character design that can subtly change near instantly. In the final arc of the Bebop anime, Spike straitens up into an aggressive, defiant stance whereas at the start of the third act of the Golden Age arc in Berserk, Griffith can do nothing but slouch and withdraw, indicating a psychological change accompanying the physical trauma he suffered.
John McDaniel interesting observation
A principal of cartoons is the centre of mass line, if you look at Tom and Jerry the line was used to communicate motion however the same principle can be applied to stature and gravitas which is why Griffith always appears regal.
John McDaniel this is actually a very important aspect in my opinion. When space dandy was still airing (mind you this was my first anime) and I saw the way he walked and stood I knew his personality was in relation to Spike from cowboy bebop DESPITE not having not seen bebop at that time and only knowing of it from other media, and I was spot on in thinking so. Posture conveys the character's personality more so than things like clothes in my opinion, similar to real people. Someone can wear the same clothes but their posture will still distinguish their characteristics.
And Guts will almost exclusively stand, or sit, in either an aggressive or defensive stance. He can stand tall, with a massive sword across his back, ready to beat down demons and men alike. Or he can take up a stance devoted to shielding Casca. Another example is probably most prominent in the Golden Age arc as Guts sleeps with his sword, often perched against an object, seemingly protecting it.
I sit inside playing video games and drawing useless stuff all day and my posture is perfect come at me
90% of anime girls = clone wars troopers lol
yup lol
Dis not the Clones. They are cool
Facts
but even the clones have good character design. a rigidness that tells us that they are uniform, with the same shapes for every trooper, symbolizing an almost hive mind of perfect structure, with the square frames of their bodies showing that even within their ranks they are orderly without fail. The only difference between each trooper is the color of their armor, all leading up with stronger colors until black, signifying rank at first glance.

Agreed. How can a pretty Fashion Model like Kawashima stand out when the other girls all look above-average in terms of looks.
melody from hxh looks pretty atrocious
Tomoko looks pretty ragged from watamote
Isaac Argesmith She's adorable tho

There's but one example that comes to my mind when you say : "simple character designs make the characters unrecognisable." and it's the difference between *Misfit at Demon King Academy* and *Overlord*. Both animes are really cool, i enjoyed both of them equally. But *Overlord*'s character designs were just so much better. The ones from *Misfit at Demon King Academy* however, made me forget the names of ALL the characters in the series but the MC's one.
I’ve never thought of character design like this before... It’s so cool!! Thx so much for this video😄❤️

The worst part is, if he knew he was in a cartoon he would acctually say that.

I’m an artist and it makes me happy to see you looking into character design. I’m currently an animation student and, while there’s a lot of over simplifications and omissions, I can tell how interested you are in character design despite not having some of the technical aspects and it makes me happy.
AAAAAA THE CONCEPTS YOU TALK ABOUT ARE SO COOL AND YOU DO A GREAT JOB IN EXPLAINING THEM GOOD JOB!
No one: Joseph: Actually getting old in anime
only character that actually ages
He’s the only one who actually gets old, yet he’s still not f*cking dead.
You know what actually doesn't get old? Kayoin, Avdol, etc.
He got vampire blood
Lol but he is the only one that li- nothing nothing
As Gin-san once told me" a good character can be recognized by his siluete, nobody is going to remember a character with no especial characteristics"
Eh, I disagree. It's always about the *personality*, for me: just because I'll remember Anime characters with designs so "desperate" they look like clowns doesn't mean they're "good" characters.
We're obviously talking about design here And you don't need to make characters look like clowns to make them recognizable, Agent 47 has a pretty iconic and simple design
paradox Acres Do you watch Gintama? Because it was just a joke. one of Gintama's many self-depricating jokes.
@Soryuu Rengazan Meh, I'd argue Agent 47 is different because he's famous for being a *video game* character --which is a medium that's meant to be _played_ rather than (passively) watched like Anime or Film. So many video game (playable) characters are bland & uninteresting characters simply because they don't need to have any personality (which may actually make it easier for players to "feel" like said characters). I mean, I'd bet anything nobody'd actually like/remember Agent 47 if he started out as an Anime character.
@Dan Videos Ah, OK. Yeah, I've never watched Gintama so I didn't know it was a joke :p
Pac-man's design is so fucking simple yet so memorable at the same time, the same goes for a ton of video game characters tbh, Mario (his design is literally tied to the word video game as a whole and his mustache, nose and hat is literally just given to him so that his face can be read through those pixels ) , Sonic ( his design can be literally summed as blue hedgehog ), Kirby (his design is literally just a pink ball with a face),Kratos (his design can literally be summed up as a white masculine guy with red face paint), Etc.
now that I think about it, pac man has a good design especially for their time when making complicated visuals was hard. His biggest feature is his mouth. Without it, he would be an unrecognizable yellow ball. His mouth is an important part of the game since the point is to eat pellets, fruits and ghosts
@@Blockoumi ITS SO FUCKING SIMPLE YET SO MEMORABLE!!!
Thank you for putting out these videos I am planning on making my own story and I really appreciate you making these videos these are definitely helping me and giving me advice for many things
Which is where the issue comes in that the majority of anime characters these days seem to borrow from the same archetype. This often goes beyond merely their visual appearance but down to their personality. The most glaring example is the typical protagonist. Average male age 15-18 with medium build, short black or brown hair, tends to be below average in terms of academic intelligence. If weapons are concerned, then they are most likely a swordsman. The message is clear, they're supposed to represent the target audience reading/watching these stories, they are designed as such for the sake of relatability, but I kinda consider this a bullshit thing to center your protagonist, the pivot of your story around. Protagonist looking/acting like a Japanese pleb doesn't actually make them more reliable, when you think about it. I can relate to Yugioh characters just fine, even if I don't have their otherworldly mind crushing hair, I can relate to Johnny Joestar better than Kirito even if I'm not a blonde paraplegic in the 19th century. "Relatability" is something a character should act out, not a mere indication that they should be a mask for the audience to pick up and wear. What making a protagonist a "default" design ended up just making them drown in the pool of billions of other 15-18 years old short, black haired protagonist, making them unable to stand out. It's a "safe play" in the way that you're not actually accomplishing anything by playing this safe.
Thats why JoJo is great, less edgy more romance to the era they were made in, such as Josuke (Part 4) during the whole "juvenile delinquent" buzz.
> below average intelligence That's why I love Lelouch.
Freshly Memed Jotaro was still great in his Part 3 design
I’m making a manga as a fun side project and I tried to make the main character,Sayuri Fujasaki’s design intersting: Sayuri wears pink cat stockings and a striped tie instead of white socks and a black tie. This way you can tell she isn’t very rule abiding but due to the fact the accessories Sayuri is meant to be cute you can tell she isn’t a delinquent. Her shoes are white instead of black and Sayuri drew hearts on the back with a permanent marker.Sayuri drawing on her shoes can also tell you, along with a backpack with drawings and doodles she did herself are meant to show off Sayuri likes art. This is just her uniform by the way Sayuri has an assassin outfit too but I’ll stop at that
Also almost every anime girl is basically a upside down triangle with colored hair and maybe abnormally large eyes
funny how Luffy has a very simple design compared to other OP characters and yet stands out the most
well oda is a design genius , onepiece has the most diverse cartoon character lineup of every existing comic
ulf ulf ulf One Piece is a mastetpiece
It's rare to have a protagonist that's so visually _unappealing_ -- I mean Luffy's dressed in rags, he's skinny as a twig, and he always has that goofy grin on his face. He looks ridiculous, but that's what makes him so unique. Saitama is the same.
but luffy also looks adorable in a way like a child, with lots of charisma and sympathy , that like out of a text book for animated characters
Yeah, but those "good" traits personality-wise are paired with "bad" (or ugly) traits appearance-wise. But that's what makes him such a memorable character.
God damn, I love your videos! I'm having to pace myself and watch these one at a time! Between your love of the medium you discuss and your experience in said medium, your insight is amazing! Also, your voice is silky sweet and provides a wonderful deterrent to reality, please carry on!
watching this a year or two after the first time i saw it, still one of the best if not the best video on character design that i've seen thus far
lets be honest, jotaro wouldn't lose in the game "who's the protag"
I mean, you *could* mistake Speedweed for the main character if you haven't seen the show. I know my friend did.
i want to mistake speedwagon for a protag because *he is*
Jotaro isn't the protagonist, Polnareff is
Kobe Sedg actually most people who see him at first glance would assume he is just a brute or bad guy so probably not
Kobe Sedg Unless if Yugi is involved. He could win literally any game of who's the protagonist with that hair.
Looks at jo jo design...looks at emblem on hat " he is wearing literal plot armor"
wait until part 6 lol
That kind of plot armor won't save you
it's not an armor, it makes jotaro's bad luck delays until part 6

Love your videos!! There are so many KZheadrs I admire so so much who produce super fun videos (Jack Septic Eye, Clleen Ballinger, The Try Guys, Good Mythical Morning, etc.) but it's not often that you come across one that makes really amazing quality work. And as someone who's studied animation, I love how you bring attention to what an incredible art form it is!
So much useful info * ^ * But most of all, thank you for making me discover such unique shows and art styles I had never seen before!!
how to draw a good character design: step one: draw a ripped dude with a pose that's 300% breaking his back step two: congratulations! you've just created a jojos character
You also need to add a really handsome chiseled face close to Handsome Squidward face, wacky unusual hair, and a bright neon background with the Japanese word “menacing” or fabulous stands also posing in the back.

Yeah, Jojo's author sure knows how is done. He has his style but he also has STYLE. I can never forget those first 3 arcs. Man! I wish Battle Tendency would've lasted more more more! (I also think the landscape has a factor here)

Well, araki artstyle tends to change between different part. But they all are great imo
I'm not gonna lie, I was just listening to this video in the background while drawing but actually picked up way more factual and beneficial information than if I actually took the time with my undivided attention towards watching this. Great video!
