  • I absolutely ADORE Jack Black in this movie. Even though he is such a distinctive actor and you think "oh damn, Jack Black!" at multiple points, you are always one hundred percent convinced that he actually is a teenaged girl. What a performance. Also, the best plot twist would have been if Alex was gay and married to a complete bear at the end.

    • @@strawberryfox8819 idk, i don't think it was strange (aka sexual) tension at the end? at least, i didn't get that from alex's side (especially considering he's had 20 years to process whatever he may have felt for bethany, so it wouldn't mean anything more than a childhood crush means to any of us). bethany just seemed a little disappointed since they had a nice connection, but tbf it literally had JUST happened for her, she didn't have as much time to process things. but either way, teens have crushes on adults sometimes, it's not creepy or wrong. it's pretty normal. it would just be wrong and creepy for the adult to like them back or pursue/encourage it in any way, which obviously did not happen here. alex looked back on the thing with bethany with fondness and appreciation, hence naming his daughter after her. but it wasn't creepy because all it ever was, was two teenagers who kinda liked each other, since they _were_ both teenagers when they met, it _wasn't_ an adult x minor thing (and actually, alex might never have even liked her back tbf, it might have been 100% one sided on bethany's part, it's never really made clear which was a good idea on the writers' part imo). it was a nice moment in the movie, and it's weird and disingenuous to phrase it like you did when that wasn't at all the vibe of the scene.

  • I actually view this an outright tribute film to Robin Williams as well as a reset. Robin Williams was well known to be a huge video game player, his daughter is named Zelda. In a way, choosing to have Jumanji evolve into a video game doesn't just work for the story, I view as it a slight nod to that aspect of Robin Williams. The scene where they outright bring up Alan Parrish and Alex states "This is Alan Parrish's house, I'm just living in it." is the pretty obvious wink and double entendre of saying a thank you and giving respect where it is due to the original. That line actually made me cry when I first watched it, I had to pause and take a moment then try to collect myself to jump back into the fun. I won't spoil it, but the character they bring in for the next one might just be my favorite cameo role ever.

  • To be fair, the original game also made it so there was a need for more people just to up the chances of survival. To get Alan out, unless Sarah got extra lucky, she wouldn't have survived the game alone while waiting to get a 5 or an 8 (if she had kept playing). More players meant more chances of both surviving and getting the numbers they needed. Same with Alex in this one; he could've maybe gotten out if he was extra lucky, but he had more chances with more players.

  • Just to parse the ending, Judy and Peter joined Alan and Sarah’ already-in-progress game. Thus once Alan won, everything went back to how it was at the start of the game…in 1969. Had these 4 kids joined Alex’s in-progress game, they would have no memory. But because Jumanji morphed from a board to video game, they started a new game. Had they perhaps “loaded” Alex’s old saved game, then yes, old rules apply and only Alex remembers. But they came in on a “new save,” if you will.

Spencer was physically fit with his knowledge, Fridge was knowledgeable about animals because he thought football was the only thing he was good at, Bethany was cartographer with not traditional good looks realizing she could do more, and Martha was a badass fighter because she didn't realize how much physical activity is important.

  • Regarding the timeline, i would point out that in the original Alan aged in the game at the same rate as the real world - when he came back out he was the same age as Sarah. In this game, Alex isn't aging at the same rate, so I think it's fine that it's different. The rules are already different.

  • I have a theory about the ending of this movie. However, first, in the first Jumanji film, there was a glimmer of recognition from the other two children when they were "first introduced" after the game was finished. There was something in the smile of those kids that seemed to say "I remember you". Secondly, the ending of the first Jumanji movie had the time reset all at one in a big bang of magical energy. This ending had them exiting the game one at a time starting with Alex. In most media regarding magic and time travel the main people who use magic for the time travel are protected from having mind altering amnesia about past events that now never happened. Since the other four were still in the game when Alex left and therefore altered the timeline in that action all at once I believe they were protected by the magic of game to where the other reality where Alex was missing for 20 years was still in their memories.

I agree the original was better (other than Empire Strikes Back and Addam's Family Values can you name any other sequels that were better than the first one? True question: I'd love to hear people's ideas for sequels that were better). I appreciate how they dealt with Alex's return to his own timeline. I really appreciated the ending in this one. I like that it’s sort of an alternate take on how jumanji works, the characters are great, and tbh I don’t mind the way they resolve the time discrepancies. It’s not a time travel film so I don’t think it’s unreasonable to just hand wave stuff happening almost the same. I also think they all kept their memories because they physically went into the game whereas in the original the game manifested in reality. Plus it seems like time works differently within jumanji to begin with.

Because we follow Alan and Sarah back to the 60s, jump to them being married in the 90s, and they end up switching up the timeline EVEN FURTHER by introducing themselves to the kids BEFORE their parents died, i.e. before anything happened with the game. And encouraged the parents not to go to where they had their accident! So...that ended up a whole logistical mess that always bothered me as a kid 😂 In this version, it makes sense because they were still IN the game when Alex's timey weirdness happened, so they weren't impacted from it.

(I’m not sure if someone else in comments said this already. Getting ready for work so I can’t check.) It may be based on who ‘won’ the game as to who remembers. In the original, Alan won and since Judy & Peter were from the future, they didn’t keep their memories. In this one, Spencer ‘won’ (as he put the jewel back). Since he was from the future, he kept his memories (obviously his friends did too since they were from the same timeline. Just like Sarah remembered.) Theoretically, Alex maybe shouldn’t have remembered but he probably needed to make sure the game ended up at the school so the kids get it (for the space-time continuum.) Judy and Peter technically never needed to find the game in the new reality, so they don’t remember.

  • This is a movie that I’ll gladly rewatch when it pops up on the channel guide. It always makes me laugh. Lots of well-deserved Jack Black kudos in the comments. Great casting overall. I also enjoyed seeing Karen Gillan as Ruby Roundhouse… acting without all Nebula’s blue makeup and cyborg enhancements.

  • I know it's unlikely but please consider Zathura, it's so underrated and is keeping with the themes established in the original Jumanji but with a scifi twist.

  • i do really wish that the sequels went into why the jumanji game is what it is in the real world. like, why is it wandering around and getting people trapped in the game? my favorite theory that i've thought of (and i'd love to know everyone's thoughts on this) is that the actual land jumanji was so corrupted/cursed/taken over by evil that it would always attract people with a drive to "win" in the face of a challenge (hence it always being a game) to help push back against the evil powers taking it over. like maybe there's a well-intentioned but desperate magic-doer who opened a "portal" (the game) to find help from other worlds (earth), and maybe you have to willingly start the game yourself rather than just getting sucked in at random because this supposed magic-doer is still not desperate enough to just force random innocent heroes into her world to save her beloved land. idk my head runs wild with theories but please PLEASE reply with more because this shit drives me bonkers and its SO fun to think about different possibilities behind the existence of the game. then again, maybe the reason for the game's and jumanji's existence is solely due to something in the real world... hmm (also does anyone remember the scene in the OG jumanji movie where two boys originally buried the game, but like centuries before allen found it? i wonder if that adds anything to the conversation...)

  • I think in the original the whole thing was once you beat it, everything returns to as it was, while in this version they just get sent home from where they started. Regarding timeline stuff, the kids from the original were still born so I notice it doesn’t get rid of the existence of some kids, but it can add on to it, thus why Alex’s kids exist. That’s just my thought process though

  • Excellent point about gym teachers not being valued enough. I hated sports at school, and yet I can't think of ONE bad PE teacher in all my school years. Not one. They were understanding, they pushed us but not beyond our limit, and managed to deal with students in pretty chaotic situations. I always remember more academic teachers fondly, like the one who made me love writing, or the one who made me love ancient history, but thinking back... all my gym teachers were very good!

    • I cant relate as someone who had a horrific bully of a pe teacher who should never have been teaching young children, an incompetent guy who spread harmful health information, and two extremely apathetic woman who ignored bullying and didn't get that having health issues means maybe I need a break when I say so (once claimed running might help my migraine) and to be allowed to go to the nurse for my meds!
