Pinned post for Q&A :)
If 1935 military naval architects were time traveled to current day and could meet and learn from current day civilian naval architects. What area of technology do you think they would be most interested in?
Hi Drachinifel! My Grandfather is a U.S Navy veteran who served aboard the USS Galveston (CLG 3) during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He is turning 80 this year and I want to do something special for his birthday. I know he watches your videos so could you, during a drydock episode, give a quick run through of the USS Galveston including its: specifications, history, and how it was converted into a guided missile cruiser. (My Grandfather’s name is Al by the way.)
Drachinifel what would you think would be the perfect cruiser for the us navy in 1941
The French Navy has decided they don’t want the British to have all the fun for World War One and want to follow in the path of their forefathers and want to donate ships to the Royal Navy to make a “French 6th Battle Squadron” what ships would be best and would you choose if you had the option if there are any differences between best and your own preference.
What is the difference between Fast Battleships and Battlecruisers they seem to basically be the same thing with different names
Breaking news: *Local Destroyer literally too angry to die*

Death Korps of Krieg
I believe that they were actually MK10s not MK13s, but MK10s were pretty close to their unserviced use by dates & probably would have failed anyway.
Also See: KMS Prinz Eugen.
Confused Laffey DD-724 noises
The Asiatic Fleet's flush deckers are such a different world than what people expect of destroyers. In either of the other US fleets, destroyers would either be escorting cruisers or capital ships or sailing in packs, yet a single Clemson holding offshore was a show of force. Far from the constant vigilance of the brass, for a brief time those sailors experienced a life that few of their fellows could. For how much it is overlooked, the Asiatic Fleet is a fascinating subject to contemplate.
Would like to mention that after DD-224 was recovered her crew nicknamed her RAMP-224 with RAMP standing for Recovered Allied Military Personnel.
It's recovered allied military property!, RAMP-224
She was happy to be brought home, little did she know she was condemned to death. RIP USS Stewart and all those who sailed on her.
Japanese attack USS Stewart Stewart: No! US tries to scuttle USS Stewart Stewart : NO! US attacks P102 P102: NO!! US uses DD224 as target practice DD224: NO!!! everyone: WHY WONT YOU SINK?!? Ship: NOO!!!!
If they ever add this ship to Kantai Collection, they need to make that her official voice line.
@@filipinowhiteboy NNOOOOO!!!!!!
My father was on this ship in late 1945, during an “evaluation”. He was fascinated how little it had been altered, beyond the new boilers, drive shafts and standard IJN navigation gear. He was tasked with getting the system to work. Their problem was solved by a Royal Navy officer, who took her out of Kobe (?) without getting permission first ! He was dressed down and told to be more assertive. He saw it as a joke and referred to her as the USS Fubar. He stayed in touch with the RN fellow, as both were birders. They were often in the company of an Albatross, that followed Dad around for quite a while.
could u tell us more? i am curious why the IGN went through the trouble to fix her up ...just whya year later!
Rob, the Japanese couldn’t make good their losses. The Stewart wasn’t severely damaged and the IJN refloated it.
Hi cmdrflake ! My father (Gudmundur Fridriksson) was on this ship from Guam to California. Would love to hear more. Email bladamadur@simnet.is.
I feel like this destroyer should be the USS Monty Python - "I'm not dead yet!"
The British had HMS Black Prince, this would be USS Black Knight. "It's just a flesh wound."
Can't wait for the USS Stewart's biography. USS Stewart: Life as a Double Agent.
Those 4 stackers are nice looking ships.
How about a 5 minute guide on the HMS Campbeltown. She began life as the USS Buchanan, a Wickes class destroyer. She was transferred to the Royal Navy in the 1940 “Destroyers for Bases” agreement between Roosevelt and Churchill. In 1942 she was loaded up with explosives and the Royal Navy sent her, along with Number 2 Commando of British Army, to St. Nazaire on the French coast, where she was rammed in to the dry dock and eventually exploded, putting the dry dock (the only one in occupied France large enough for a battleship the size of the Tirpitz) out of action for the duration of the war.
The Essence of the Omnissiah was strong in this little ship :)
So the IJN left the 224 on the bow? How odd.
I want to know more about USS Marblehead and her career.
May I guess that azur lane peak your interest in Marblehead
@@mohdafnanazmi1674 slightly, but mostly due to what I had slightly read about Marblehead's multiple refits. I want to know what are the causes of these refits, apart from modernization and upgrading her firepower.
@@Hardbass2021 ahh the one about the id card being different from her look I actually read about it in a wiki but I am sure he can talk about it in more enjoyable in a KZhead video
@@mohdafnanazmi1674 yep. Drachinifel can inject dry humor at any information that he researched about his topic.
Pinned post at top of comments is for asking Drac questions...I would like to know more about her too.
I've been to Seawolf Park many time & been aboard both the Edsell-Class USS Stewart & the Gato-Class USS Cavalla many times. I believe that both vessels have been successfully restored after Hurricane Ike in 2008. Seawolf park is actually a pretty good WWII historical themed park.
I really like the look of the trunked forward funnels of the Japanese refit.
My father, Herman Deiters torpedo mate 2nd class served on a division ship of the Steward, the USs John D. FORD DD228. I would love to see a segment on the USS John D Ford dd228
Thanks for mentioning the sinking of my beloved HARDER in Dasol Bay. I was hoping at the beginning you would and knew you wouldn't disappoint. I sure wish someone would locate HARDER...
That sort of sounded like "No ship left behind!" She was a prisoner of war and had to be liberated. (and sunk but...)
MY LIFE FOR THE CLEMSON SWARM!!!
Breaking news the destroyer decided it had enough and suffered a fatal case of scraping
Its surprising that this ship isn't featured in one of the "ship girl" gatcha scam game franchises like Azure lane or Kantai collection, but I guess they have enough semi-famous named destroyers in the IJN.
Muzzled. shiratsuyu, ayanami, fubuki, hatsuharu to name a few
Completely random aside but Kantai Collection doesn't have a real-money gatcha. The only in-game thing for sale worth buying is slots to hold more ships, and the franchise makes most of its money on merchandise.
With AL, the oldest USN DDs that I'm aware of are Farragut-class for now. None of the ships in-game that were in the Asiatic Fleet (Houston, Marblehead, or Langley) make mention of it and the story overlooks the Second Sino-Japanese War in favor of the Sakura Empire's aggression exploding into existence with Pearl Harbor.
The way things worked out she should have been recommisioned the USS Cat of 9 Lives.
Finally the notification worked
ARGHHH it is now 11:30pm so I changed to this video BUT I MUST WATCH
Loved the Stewart story. How about an hour devoted to the armed merchant cruisers HMS Jervis Bay and HMS Rawalpindi?
The torpedoes that didn't explode, are they the ones that wouldn't explode when they were supposed to?
The one time the torpedoes not exploding was a blessing not a curse.
Yep
They were the infamous Mark 14, but they had no trouble exploding with the proper amount of impact. It was the pistols in the warheads that were defective, not the warheads themselves. It was only by shear luck they she could take a hit directly on her torpedo racks and not suffer a devastating and probably fatal explosion.
@@sarjim4381 It was rather more complex than that. Check out Drachinfel's video on the topic for full details.
@@Temp0raryName I understand the myriad causes of the unreliability of the Mark 14 torpedo when it was fired from a torpedo tube. My point here was none of those causes was the warhead itself and, given the right physics of incoming shells, they blew up just fine.
Ive visited the uss Stewart DE-238 in Galveston pretty fun experience
Thanks for video!
USS Marblehead, joint stupidest and most intriguing name of a ship ever.
Named after Marblehead, Massachusetts, which was in turn named by settlers who couldn't tell the difference between a granite ledge and a marble one.
@@deamon002 -- This leads to the question of why so many American cruisers are named after obscure towns in Massachusetts.
Nothing stupid about it, it's named after a city, which was common for USN cruisers.
@Raging S Marblehead is also where John Glover's regiment came from, the guys who handled the boats that got Washington's army across the Delaware River to attack Trenton on Christmas 1776. The guys manning the row boats in the famous painting are Marbleheaders.
Please review some of the Dutch east indies fleet
Two videos 15 mins apart?
Redoing older videos before he started using his own voice
Third still gets you on the podium....
Great. Now hopefully someday we will retake the Pueblo from North Korea, put her back in service just long enough to sail her home, and paint a giant middle finger to communists on her stern as she stands out to sea. Pueblo is the second oldest commissioned ship in the USN after Constitution, because the Navy refuses to strike her from the list until she is either recaptured, returned, or destroyed.
thats fuggin awesome!
I'd like to see a story on the USS Piedmont, AD-17 Destroyer Tender that served in WW2. Korea, and some time in Vietnam. finally sold off to Turkish navy, she served as a supply and support ship until scrapped.
And here's that Stewart video lmao
I believe that after she was recovered she was nicknamed RAMP-Recovered Allied Military Property!
My Grandfather was on the Stewart.
They should have preserved the poor vessel to bad none of the Clemson or wikes class ships were never preserved
"She could not simply be given her old name again, so she was renamed USS Agincourt"...
14 4-inch guns then? :)
An ocean-going ship doing "Sand Pebbles" duty in China before The Second Great Unpleasantness.
Where is the Cleveland class cruiser episode. My dad was on cl65
Ok so what’s in Galveston Texas ? The newer Stewart?
How about May bing to post war ships and include auxiliary ships
Can you do hms M33 please
So how many rockets were fired at a target , not firing back and possibly not moving ship to get those 18 hits? Wargaming DD captains want to know! Please advise.
How about a USS Marblehead review?
the music link doesn't work
Too bad we have no examples of the Clemson class other than a few hulks. It would have been nice to have one a a museum ship since the Clemson class was so iconic, but by 1945 they were completely wore out.
It's really hard to understand why an inoperable 1920 vessel was towed all the way from Guam to California only to be used for target practice, surely there must have been plenty of target stock on the west coast anyway.
With docks full of ships to decommission, even if many would ultimately be scrapped, finding a spot for her was probably considered a waste of effort. Between her state of disrepair and the general attitude at the time of seeing these ships as little more than military hardware, if she hadn't been filled with holes then then she probably would have been sent to Operation Crossroads.
❤️ arrr they going to charge us with salt of the earth and battery Russell de Porter...
This is the only ship I know that’s been captured and used by an enemy
USS Stewart thinks she's a 19th century frigate - like something from an Aubrey/Maturin novel
The Japanese kept the hull number, why?
I wonder if 224 held a grudge against the US for abandoning her lol
_USS Stewart Ersatz Stewart_

Why do you say 'occupied' Korea. Chōsen was a Japanese colonial territory, just like Taiwan. You probably wouldn't say Palestine was 'occupied' by the British?
