Subsequently and exhaustively imitated, the language of the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt is immediately recognisable, speaking with the ‘still small voice of calm’ amid chaos and confusion. Born in 1935, Pärt reached compositional maturity in the late 60s with a series of works which painfully juxtaposed modernist dissonances with diatonic islands of peace, often Christian in message and raining down criticism from Soviet authorities.
At this point the evolution of his style produced an unassuming piano piece, Für Alina, which holds the key to the next 25 years of his music. For it he developed a ‘tintinnabuli’ technique where melodies move step by step around a central pitch, producing a soundworld timeless yet original and distinctively new.
From the technique grew instant classics of a genre at one remove from the slick certainties of US minimalism: Fratres and its many arrangements (eight of them represented here), the Cantus in memory of Britten, Tabula rasa for a Baroque sized concerto grosso ensemble and more. Then, having emigrated to Germany, Pärt applied the technique to the Christian texts which were always his rock and inspiration: first the St John Passion in 1982, followed by a sheaf of vocal works such as the Magnificat, Stabat Mater and Maria Antiphons which have become standard repertoire for choirs around the world.
In the last 20 years the harmonies in his music have filled out and become accommodated to a Romantic richness of expression even in sacred works such as I am the true vine and The Woman with the Alabaster Box, but there remains an individual simplicity to Pärt’s idiom that resists easy classification while continuing to affirm beauty and touch the souls of listeners.
All the works mentioned here are included in the box, in widely praised modern recordings made during the last 20 years, and the set is accompanied by full booklet notes.

The book, Cloud of Unknowing, and The Book of Privy Counseling are true guides in that direction. May your prayer life deepen until the Experience of God is with you in all hours.

  • Its magic, but i expected to visit a so called martinee concert in salzburg austria and the four seasons should be the highlight of this concert. As i arrived in the so called mirrowroom of salzburg they announced that the composer was sick for four seasons and instead should be tabula rasa from arvo pärt which i dont knew. So far this concert of arvo pärts tabula rasa was not from this planet as all people went out after this concert with tears and i felt 3 days like in heaven so i will never forget and say thank you for this present yours robert from austria

  • I can't possibly express how much I love this. I had never heard of this composer until I saw him mentioned in a new novel by one of my favorite contemporary authors--- EVERY OCEAN HAS A SHORE by Jamie Langston Turner--- who created a quirky character who is a minimalist and says she enjoys music by Arvo Pärt. She is sometimes overheard humming unusual music with only a few long-held-out notes that seem to repeat and go up and down... at least, that was the impression it made on her unimaginative boss when he heard it. I was intrigued by the idea of "minimalist music" and wondered if this Arvo Pärt could be a real composer, decided to look him up on KZhead, and clicked PLAY expecting to hear something weird and tuneless. You can imagine the shock of delight when instead I was greeted by the ethereal beauty of Spiegel im Spiegel. I am captivated. This will now play as the perfect soundtrack for the rest of my reading of this wonderful book. BTW I highly recommend any and all of Jamie Langston Turner's novels.

  • You get this feeling with some of Part's compositions which you also get with some of those by John Taverner. That they have been around for ever and they are inextinguishable. It is a classic case of someone making exceptionally beautiful and spiritually profound music having done a lot of study and research and learning about past composers. Having learnt so much about medieval choral and devotional music he was able to move the tradition forward in a way that is devastatingly good and right.

  • "The sound was up and down, sometimes disappeared and other times came with the wind of the air. I stood in front of the shelter, the day started faking, a few tiny human’s figures moving against the dimmed sky over the riverbend. Occasionally a weak sound of knocking came a few seconds after their body movement, as they were knocking wood piles of bridge into the river. Everything looks like a cartoon and not real - except that piece of music that is continuously playing inside some part of my body, strong and clear sometimes, weak and fakeaway other times. At that moment, everything around me was frozen, stopped; I was full of tears; I suddenly felt as if I was alive. I didn’t remember how long I stood there, until a group of young inmates and villagers waved arms to me as they walked back from their work. I did not tell anyone my experience and I couldn’t find what, and how a piece of music struck me in that remote isolated village. ..... " quote from " a story of a musician" by Jerry Nie, rmt

  • Arvo Pärt follows the line of development initiated during the Middle Ages and without abandoning it grows into contemporary music. This capacity of synthesis preserving beauty perhaps belongs to our confused times. Pärt transcends time, is at the same time baroque, minimalist, medieval, contemporary, classic. I believe he will be, in the future, a Master. Thanks again Brilliant Classics for producing and uploading this marvelous music.

  • I've been watching a tv show recently that is very ugly and has been distressing & depressing me. I decided to stop watching due to the negative effect it was having on my mental well-being. Two minutes into Spiegel im Spiegel, I burst into tears. It feels like a cleansing; I can _feel_ the healing and re-centering taking place in my heart. This is music to make you whole.
