Corals have long since been in the news for being at risk of bleaching. At Georgia Aquarium, a team of biologists are helping restore coral in the wild-by cultivating them in the lab.

Ygor Martins I wanted pet coral
@@biovorebarrage6860 so did i, i was actually thinking about buying a tank

I didn't even know coral nurseries we're a thing until just now. These people are doing fantastic work, and I want to thank them so much for protecting the environment.
It's their job, they're supposed to do this.
+Yo Mama its still amazing though... I imagining what would be like if I worked with them, witnessing the incredible life of this corals would be awesome enough and also be able to help in the conservation of this endangered corals would feel really great..
coral nurseries dont help much, because the new coral will die just as fast as wind coral
Andrew Buist thank you, I raise coral in my 300 gallon tank
You can grow corals at home which is a lot of work and a lot of money xP reef tanks are what you can do to grow them yourself but heads up it’s crazy expensive and it’s a good market for an experienced reefer or if your a beginner reefer try zoas and mushrooms
When she said “as a biologist you must get used to failure,” I just laughed thinking of all the experiments I’ve failed in college so far
Lindsay Dale I hope you are gonna make more of those failures in master and phd study.
Same for chemistry ^^
MrDjafal1 I hated when you’re almost done with a long lab and mess up one of the last steps, and have to start from the beginning
Lindsay Dale nah I was thinking of my life
Ohh same :")
did they just call a smol coral "baby Groot"? that is just the most precious thing ive ever heard

I like kim. She's doing a job she loves and is helping the environment. Smart, kind, dedicated, really a good example for everyone.
Your question is very counter intuitive.
Wtf? How is that counter intuitive? Are you 12?
I also like how she really seems to care, the line "I want to be able to look at my daughter and say that I tried" says a lot about her values as a person. She's truly someone to be admired!
she is helping the enviroment? if u put coral in a dying reef it wont help because it will just die with the reef. And coral requires lots of energy to grow, energy usually comes from fossil fuels, which ruins the enviroment even more. so it is very counter intuitive.
kim kardashian too
Coral: *is dying* Scientists: Fine. We'll breed them ourselves.
Brenton Taylor that’s the general human solution

How to grow coral: Step one, grow coral.
Step two, observe the growing coral and awe.
Reef hobbyists: You guys are getting paid?! I would love to have my hobby full time.
@@buffpathfinder3607 A lot of reef hobbyists that are successful with their corals can make a bit of money back by selling frags.
You just realise the gravity of human destruction when you hear biologists ‘working to make wildlife self sustained’.
@Val Brooker People should check up on survivorship bias. You dont think scientists are well aware of the requirements corals have, or that their observed data is true/relevant/something that should be taken into consideration more than "stuff existed before, it will continue to do that"?
@Val Brooker How do they fare in more acidic oceans? Because what are your merits and sources to be a arbiter of truth and lies (and the warmer claim).
@Val Brooker To check if a claim is factual or just the comment from a overcertain individual. Is to check the merits of the sources/proofs they have provided. And you have provided absolutely zero sources. The co2 lags claim might be answered by this video kzhead.info/sun/rbVsgN6RjGOEank/bejne.html
@Val Brooker To be fair, the reason we need to breed Elkhorn and Staghorn now is because there was an epidemic that wiped 95% of them out and although they are recovering in some places, that's not the same for everywhere and in some places it's much slower than optimal if at all.
And as she said, it's relatively hard for them to reproduce with the small population size. If you look at historical records of their populations and look at them now you will see the huge difference. They literally use to dominate the shallow reefs but now they are rare and endangered
I love how she refers to the tiny coral as "him." Technically I guess that's the correct way because he's an animal, but it's still super cute!
Didn't ask for their pronouns first How can they assume? Triggered!
Corals are hermaphrodites, meaning that they have both male and female gametes and can produce eggs and sperm. So technically the pronouns would be "it" but "he" does sound better. 🙃

Amazing work, I’m a student getting my undergraduates degree in marine biology, and we do a lot of work like this, we recently in the beginning of august collected the spawning from A.PAL because they are endangered. For my thesis I will be looking at micro-fragmentation on artificial substrates as a way for reef restoration. I’m currently working on my proposal and January next year I am to begin my work......I’m excited........Great video!!!!!
This sounds as a dream! I do an ecology/conservation degree and really wanna switch to coral restoration thing.. How does it go now?
How are you at designing a coral reef using a iron barge that can be placed and sunk at predetermined area, it can be arranged, it would get you started in farming
Home aquarists have been doing this for decades. Nice to see that the scientists have caught up.
I'm actually glad that youtube recommended me this
What they should be doing as well is breeding a variation of the corals that can withstand the harsher conditions of the future. It seems like corals can't naturally adapt fast enough, so we should definitely help them...
Lardah420 that sounds like a bad idea lol atleast in the wild
Like what Combed Autumn said it would be a bad idea. If corals were bred for one factor in nature another influence can cause corals to die off again. We should just let nature thrive in their own. We have already made bacteria resistant to our medicine and they did that on their own.
It’s an interesting concept, but there are so many thousands of species that it would be almost impossible to do that with the majority of species. Not to mention seeing corals in spawn in captivity is incredibly rare. It is highly dependent on perfect conditions and lunar cycles. Captive spawning of corals is almost unheard of, however I’ve personally witnessed my anemones spawning and I know some species of tridacna clams have also spawned.
Genetic engineering but you know ppl havr a negative stigma towards it
Sure, it's better to risk whole ecosystems bringing new species to uncontrolled habitats than try to preserve our natural patrimony 😂 sorry, there is no easy fix
I used to dream into becoming a marine biologist. The ocean ecosystem is really intricate and elegant. I might actually consider getting it as my minor in the future.
Not gonna lie, the backround music sounds like minecraft music😆
Been doing this for 2 years now. Really hope more people would involve themself in this
mohammad faiz yeah I hope so

"Love working with corals" shows a rock anemone #truereefer
the editor probably didn't know the difference.
Hahaha, I saw that too! 😂
At first i strongly agreed with post but i think they were referencing it as under phylum cnidaria which was discussed in beginning and includes both anemones and corals
This is so fascinating. I sincerely hope we can use this process to restore coral reefs all over the world.
Thanks Kim for everything you do. You're very admirable.
This brightened my entire month I had no idea this was going on. Thank you for your service!
Way to go for saving the Earth!

This video is underrated, love the things you do!
Thank you! That was wonderful to see. I have loved keeping reef and fish tanks for decades. Someday I would like to visit the Georgia Aquarium. I've seen it so many times by remote viewing. I really appreciate the videos on KZhead and the research you're doing.
True climate heros at work here 🤗 no blocking roads, railways or waterway. The intelligence and persistence of these amazing people has produced the most inspiring work for our reefs. Love this video
Growing new coral colonies (correction: "Attempting to grow...") from fertilized embryos was one of my jobs as a research assistant at James Cook University, Townsville, Australia in 2000. Needless to say, I had no success after one spawning event and soon left to work on infectious diseases. I am now a science teacher and will show this video to my students today. It is nice to see that perseverance and ingenuity has won out in this field. Also reassuring that it took 9 years to establish this technique - so I don't feel so bad about having no luck in the few months that I spent attempting to do this all those years ago. Thanks for the video.
Excellent Research on Coral. I request you all team to keep researching to give world a fine theory and results.
So much respect for this woman, her team, and all the amazing work and research that’s been done.

GD that cracked me up. I can just see him on the shore, all beaten to shit, gun drawn and chest cartoonishly pointed at the sky as an oil tanker runs adrift a reef.
Never thought I’d sit and watch a Blind Date show for Corals but here I am.
This is the most informational and professional video made compared to all those fake reefers out there who is fragging corals for the money and trying to catch the KZhead fame, likes and subscribe bs. The cool thing is that you are breeding corals and have a purpose for it unlike some people who are fragging corals for the money. 😁
Wonderful work guys! !

In the mean time you can begin a saltwater aquarium. It's a great hobby, but can be expensive.
This is gonna sound stupid, but Hehe I already have a mini saltwater tank with some corals and a clownfish!😆
Coral nurseries are awesome! I didn’t even know you could do this. I see this with potential to be a fad and thus maybe bringing attention to coral restoration?
