    • Yes! I’m 45, we were taught so little in school. First half of the semester was the dawn of civilization to the colonialism. Then it was the revolutionary war to WWII. We had maybe 1 day on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr & Rosa Parks. It was pitiful & yet another injustice in not giving a voice to the oppressed. I studied history in college. American History 101 was colonialism to industrial revolution. One semester for hundreds of years of history. Then History 102 was WWII to current. It feels like it was designed to skim over ‘uncomfortable truths’ & to jam so much content in such a short period that you get no depth on anything. You just memorize dates & names for the tests & don’t retain any of it. I’ve learned over the past years that it’s our job to educate ourselves on history, race, systemic racism & inherent privilege. I was pulled over by a cop but I never feared for my life during the stop. I grew up poor, survived 25yrs of violent abuse & have had chronic health issues that have prevented me from doing many things. But if I were black or brown these same issues would have been much, much worse & my options to escape, survive & receive medical help would have been much further from my grasp. We need to completely change our educational system along with the many institutions that do not work as they should. Until then, its our responsibility to learn about our country’s history & how it has effected minorities to this day. Hope you have a great weekend.

  • If I hadn't served in the military back in the 70's I would be in denial now like most in rural eastern Kansas are today. Many here are controlled by conservative media and false patriotism being used to manipulate them against people portrayed as rioters when most are simply risking their lives to protest how they are treated. And if you try to talk about these important things you'll get just a couple reactions: rage and the quoting of talking points they've learned watching conservative media. They want to believe they aren't racist but they want other races to stay away and not disrupt their lives or question what they believe.

As an adult I'm constantly thirsty, wanting to learn, and most everything I'm educated on has been self taught. This helps explain the total lack of knowledge certain people seem to have about anything going on outside the country. I come across so many adults that have no idea, and I can't understand, w the access to knowledge and information we now have, why people would not choose to educate themselves..maybe it just doesn't even occur to them.

  • add a feature where you can specify exactly what kind of companies you're ok with having your info "companies within 5miles" "only small businesses" "only eco friendly" etc etc. this makes it even MORE valuable to FB, and work better for us. and then make them ask/beg for our data, like it's worth something, and not just given/stolen for free for decades.

  • If I'm not mistaken companies don't have honor the "opt out" selection. There is a list of companies that voluntarily abide by it. Others can choose to ignore it. Also It's funny it's always concern for "small business owners" whenever there is a change proposed that will hurt big businesses even more. Like minimum wage. Suddenly small businesses are held up as the reason to keep things as they are.

Only decades later did I find out the schoolbook's horror picture of how slaves were packed into ships was actually from a local shipowning company and that my country profitted hugely from this activity.

    • In my history class we learned about a lot of that actually, we learned about how the Natives were also enslaved for a long time, how slavery took a part in the first few hundred years, and all that kinda stuff. I do know that most classes don't do that though, as this year is the only year I've learned about it.

I grew up in Washington DC where most public schools are filled with black educators so a lot of my teachers really put in the work to teach us about slavery and racism from as early as 4th grade. If it wasn't for them, I would not be as well aware and informed today. I am happy to have had that environment to really learn and understand Black American History.

  • The statement made in this video about history is so true. As an Irish person, our very history and relationship with the British is taught very differently in history lessons in school. The kids in the UK are not taught about all the horrible things the British done to the Irish during the "Plantations" and the aftermath of such, i.e the "Famine". Caused by the potatoes plague the native people of Ireland were left with no food, but all the time food was being exported from Ireland by the wealthy British planted land owners. All this time the natives are starving to death, but can't have any of the food produced in their country. It verges on genocide.
