  • Xavier University had this speech at the commencement for our graduation and it truly changed the way I live. It was like everything I had learned from the ethics and philosophy classes and the books I had read all clicked at once and this speech revealed the hidden truth to life. I know he said that it’s not a moral imperative to think the way he was about those situations, but I disagree, that became the moral foundation of my entire life. It completely solidified the point of all the moral lessons I had learned and it was as if the underlying truth was there in my mind being exercised daily, but had yet to be pulled forward into consciousness and that speech did it for me. I can still remember laying awake just going over it in my head that night and this episode just took me right back to the day of graduation.

  • A famous professional angler named Hank Parker talked about retiring from the sport. It was a Wired2Fish episode, in which Hank said it took him five years, to begin to enjoy going fishing for it's own sake. As opposed to going fishing in order to try to win a championship (Hank explained it wasn't until he started to fish with non-professional anglers, that he understood that professionals were so unusual in how they approached the sport). That competitive motivation just never switched off inside them, long enough to figure out, how to just go fishing. And not turn it into a game, which they had to be the winner of.

    @academicmailbox7798@academicmailbox7798 Жыл бұрын
    • And that reminded me too, about the way George Best a professional soccer player once explained it. George was forced out of his sport for multiple reasons. He said that he had enjoyed life in the fast lane. And after he departed from professional sport, he learned how to enjoy life in the bus lane.

      @academicmailbox7798@academicmailbox7798 Жыл бұрын
    • There were many things that Hank Parker explained that resonates with Jocko's description of a heavy weight, mixed martial artist (being the one guy in that sport who was able to put all the ingredients together). That is how Hank described his own success as a professional angler. There was another side to it as well. Hank said that many of the anglers over analyzed results where he did not achieve their targets (Hank said it was when he learned how to be satisfied, he had done everything he could have done in a day's competition fishing, he became a better competitor). And that also related to Jocko's argument about knowing one's strengths or weaknesses. Hank said this about fishing too, that the competitive angler should understand their strengths, and their weaknesses. To learn how to tailor their fishing strategy around 'a best fit', based on such an understanding of one's own capabilities.

  • You have no idea how much I needed this today, Sir. Past two days have been real "test days" and I've been walking around ready to explode. As you were reading the excerpt early in the video, I could see myself in that scenario and was actively getting more upset as you read. Then the punchline hit, and you instantly deflated my hot air balloon...

  • I think with that case at 46:14 it's more that they lied to themselves about wanting to be a SEAL. If they really wanted it they would give it their all, and when the motivation runs out discipline is what takes over because you'll use it to do things you don't want to do in order to achieve said goal. I used to be one of those people, I lied to myself about wanting to be a 75th ranger, I didn't actually want it, and when I realized this (albeit mostly at a late point at the later part of being 27 I'm now 29 years old), it allowed me to pivot my focus into what I actually wanted which was to be a gamedev, rich, and a set of other goals.

    @ollicron7397@ollicron7397 Жыл бұрын
    • I think where a lot of people make mistakes is that they say want something but they don't realize the sacrifice it takes to get that. For example, a lot of people say they want say The Rock's body. But do they want to go to the gym as often and for as long as he does? Is that even possible with their jobs, family, etc? Do they want to eat his boring diet? Some people want to start a company get rich. Do you really want to work 15-hours day? I could on. So the message I got from this podcast make sure when you say you want something you are prepared for the sacrifices you have to make. Also, know your personal strengths and weaknesses to know if it is a realistic goal.

Came here for the Bud Anderson WW2 and Topgun flying stories, but then we get war veterans discussing deep universal spiritual matters that are something I also very much struggle with, the disgust about what people are doing on this planet vs deliberately choosing an empathic, compassionate outlook on people and what they do despite what's going on on this world.

Secondly, force back my natural impatience, and become THE most courteous driver I can possibly be. My success rate is directly proportionate to how many songs either by Led Zeppelin, Elvis, or by The Doors I listen to prior to engagement.

  • Awesome "pep talk". I always enjoy the media you put out, even though I don't always agree with all of your views/opinions (and how friggin' boring would that be if we all agreed on everything anyhow, eh? Probably lead to a pretty stagnant society too). I do think that in regards to unreached potential, it's not always that you have wasted your time or your life. Sometimes not reaching your potential is massively influenced by a combination of doing the best you can in the circumstances you have been in/are in and the way you were raised/the people and environment you were/are surrounded by. If you don't have good supports, in the way of basic necessities, family/friends, or opportunities, then it can be difficult to "fully" reach/realize your "potential". Maybe you have a genius level IQ and you are born into the lowest caste in India. Maybe you are a creative genius who is born into squalor and poverty and you don't even have access to the internet or basic necessities. No one is likely to ever notice that you even exist. There's 8 billion of us, so sometimes, you just have to do the best you can in your small little corner of the world. In regards to lying to yourself... reminds me of a song. The lyrics feel very familiar to me, lol! I'm sure I'm not the only one.🤘 🎵🎵I gotta tell myself / another lie / 'cause that's what helps / to get me by / 'cause I'm in hell / this is my / goodbye farewell.🎶🎶 kzhead.info/sun/e7d6dKpvZ6RjlHA/bejne.html

  • The "Esteem" tier of the hierarchy is way more subtle than wanting a big reward or promotion. It can be as simple as not being completely invisible at a new job. Soldiers, for example, have to wear the same uniform, have to have similar haircuts, get issued identical gear. They belong as a soldier, belonging tier accomplished. The next tier is how to stand out as a unique individual within this group. It doesn't have to be rank, it can be as simple as earning a nickname, or a reputation of some sort, maybe a specialized skill or position.
