In a lecture titled "The Amarna Sunset," Aidan Dodson, Professor of Egyptology at the University of Bristol, explores what we know and can infer about the period of less than a decade that spanned the triumphal ‘durbar’ of Akhenaten’s Year 12 to the point at which Tutankhamun’s Restoration Stela marked the eclipse of the heretic king’s vision. In doing so, Professor Dodson considers the evidence for the identities of Smenkhkare and Neferneferuaten, who ruled alongside Akhenaten during his last years, as well as the parentage of Tutankhamun.

  • Excellent lecture covering the main points of contention concerning this fascinating and shadowy period. There is something, though, that I would have liked to have seen addressed which was not and that is the name, "Smenkhkare". The cartouche containing this name is preceded by "Sa Ra", (son of Ra) indicating that it is a "nomen". (birth name) However, the name "Smekhkare" is not a personal name but a royal title. It would be like a modern family naming their son "Defender of the Faith" and therefore indicates that something curious was going on. My own supposition is that if Smekhkare was Akhenaten's brother then he would probably have been given a birth name containing "Amun" and that he changed it to suit the changing times but the issue could be seen in a number of other ways. There was a king with the prenomen, Smekhkare, in the 13th dynasty and he may have been an interim ruler drawn from the military, something that seems to have also happened in the late 18th dynasty, if you consider Ay and Horemheb. Although this seems like a minor detail it is potentially significant and it would have been interesting to hear what Professor Dodson's thoughts were on the matter.

  • If I were to die tomorrow and, after crossing over to the other side, was asked what mystery I would like to know the truth of, two mysteries spring forth in my mind. I'd either want to know how the pyramids were built or the whole story on the Amarna period. The Amarna period is the frontrunner.

  • Thank you! There is so much we may never know. I would like a modern pathologist’s opinion on Younger Lady. She has the face of someone who died peacefully. I just can’t see someone looking like that with the injury happening at time of death. After death and before mummification, yes.

  • Whomever Smenkhare was, seems Horemheb didn't care much for Ankhenaten, Nefertiti, Meritaten, or Smenkhare, Ay certainly didn't care much about Ankhesenamun, and luckily Tutankhamun's small tomb, like he, was forgotten about after the first raid, not long after his burial. Ramses IX raided every known tomb in the Valley of the Kings

  • Anybody know what has happened about Zawi Hawass's claim that he would identify the mummies of Nefertiti and Ankhesenamun last October. It is now four months later and I am not aware of any announcement or even the courtesy of an update if perhaps expected DNA verification hasn't been forthcoming ?

  • The fact that the TA 2 ink sketch of Semenkhare and her wife Meritamen was not cut yet in Relief should make it clear that the drawing should be dated around the last year of the royal family living in Akhenaten. The Durbar scene was carved in year 12, and due to the pestilence, nothing was done for a few years.

  • The DNA study, published in 2010, quite precisely demonstrates that the parents of Tutankhamun are a full brother and sister, who are the man from KV55 and the KV35 Younger Lady. There was nothing in that study that suggested KV55 could be Tutankhamun's uncle! 50% of Tut's DNA came from KV55 and the other 50% from KV35YL, which is consistent with a parent/child relationship. The people with whom one shares 50% of ones DNA are very limited to...each parent, a full sibling, and ones own child. But never with an uncle, unless that uncle is an identical twin of the father.

    • I have heard the explanation that what appears to be the DNA of a child from a full brother-sister union can also be explained by cousins who were the product of a few generations of inbreeding which certainly was common during dynastic Egypt. For example, Pharaoh Ay is possibly/likely the father of Nefertiti as well as the brother of Queen Tiye. So brother-sister Ay/Tiye's children (Nefertiti/Akhenaten) married and were possibly/likely first cousins who themselves were born of inbreeding. To clarify (since a few comments below misinterpreted my statement), I am not claiming that the parents of Ay and Tiye had children TOGETHER. Since many scholars believe Ay and Tiye were siblings, then their children FROM DIFFERENT UNIONS, Akhenaten and Nefertiti, were cousins who married and then birthed inbred children.

      @brenspin@brenspin Жыл бұрын
    • @@brenspin No. The DNA of cousins does not look like that of siblings. Using your example, Ay [if he really was a brother of Queen Tiye] would have DNA that was 50% different from that of Tiye. Besides, the DNA of Tiye would be recombined with that of Amenhotep III and the DNA of Ay with a woman of unknown parentage--so it would be impossible for the DNA of the children of each couple to be indistinguishable. Going back to the DNA of the oldest couple in the 2010 Cairo study, Yuya and Thuya, these share almost no DNA--so where is the inbreeding there? Amenhotep III and Tiye might have been related, but they also don't share that much DNA. The real inbreeding of that study only begins with the KV55 individual and the KV35 Younger Lady, who really are a brother and a sister and the parents of Tutankhamun. Anyone who says any different hasn't done their DNA homework well enough. Tutankhamun only has one set of grandparents and they are Amenhotep III and Tiye. Forget about Ay as far as he is concerned.

  • Dr Dodson I could be wrong but I think your position on the Younger Lady is that she is Nefertiti? But that cannot be if the KV55 Mummy is Smekhkare because the DNA suggests they are the parents of Tutankhamen. It’s possible but v unlikely. Is it not possible the YL is Merikaten and she and Smenkhkare are the parents of Tutankhamen. Will there DNA work as multiple cousins although in fact they would be uncle and niece? Thanks 🙏

  • If Nefertiti would have been the daughter of Ay, then surely Ay would have had her buried as a king, which would have certainly improved his own standing? And if there would have been moves by her to improve relations with the non-Aten priesthoods, surely that would also have made them more likely to accept a kingly burial for her?

  • I propose that Kiya was Akhenaten's sister. Akhenaten's grandparents were Yuya and Thuya. His mother's name was Tiye. The name Kiya fits this pattern of names.

  • Akhenaten's ascension to the throne occurred in the wake of destruction, and sickness (that took, or crippled, his father at the end of his rule), probably in the mid-12th Century BC, not the 14th Century, or even later. He was a contemporary of Zoroaster, or Zarasthtustra, who also founded his version of monotheism around the same time Jews were adopting the practice (begging the obvious question). This was also the time of the Fall of Empires, the original Trojan War, the end of the Mycenaeans, the arrival of the "sea peoples", and Isaiah's "A Tale of Two Clocks" (apologies to Mr Dickens), a tumultuous century that began on the heels of an earlier apocalypse, in the closing years of the 13th Century.
