The Uno Amalgam Returns to the Digital Realm! - I Mess With Games
It has been awhile since we went digital! Turns out there are far more Uno video games than I thought, so in this episode we're returning to the digiverse to add some of the most mechanic-heavy Uno versions to the Amalgam! Because there's so much to cover, this video is longer than average! Yay!
We're taking a huge step when it comes to progress in this episode! I'm really not sure how many more episodes there will be in this series. My estimate is... 6? Maybe less? But that's just the combination phase of the project! Don't worry, there's still plenty of Chemicards content to come! Thank you all for sticking around this long! I'm glad this series has been so well received by everyone, and I can't wait to make a physical game for you all to play!

It's crazy how Campaign for North Africa, The Desert War, 1940-1943 is finally getting competition for most complex board/card game, thankfully I don't think Uno Amalgam is going to take 20 years to beat.

I love how this episode introduced a bunch of mechanics to switch the top cards of the discard piles, but only 1 or two cards care about specific discard piles. Its hilarious.

Honestly the biggest impact this has is it's interactions with the topple rule - anything forcing you to interact more with the discard piles, esp in ways not just involving putting something on top, is a great way to accidentally knock an adjacent pile over

My small brain cannot comprehend how the Java Free Fall shuffle and reverse blocks would influence the Amalgam. What would be cool was if the reverse block flipped all the cards over to their other sides (without triggering effects) and if the shuffle shuffled the entire discard pile, putting a previously played card on top (potentially triggering effects).
Those sound like cool custom card ideas!

The triple play mechanic combined with anything that let’s you play multiple cards in a turn, such as the play 4 card, by moving a card away from the locked discard pile you open it (the card) up to be played on, the gold block card is also affected. And also the tilt card. And the card from the other free fall game. So really it does a lot.

Everyone takes a stack and shuffles it nicely. They then take a third and pass it left, and pass another third right. Then shuffle again. Repeat a few times and you get a pretty good mix. It also kind of adds to the communality of the game.

I don't have much to say this time other than that it's crazy that someone documented the card information for Rocked Sock'en UNO from UNO DirecTV Game Lounge. Cable TV game applications seems near impossible to preserve, so it's nice to see that this unique UNO version wouldn't be forgotten and it's mechanics would be shoved into this mess.

There's only a few videos of that game on KZhead. I'm very thankful all 3 of its cards appear in a tutorial screen. Because otherwise - only footage of the red card appeared on screen. But thanks to the tutorial - we have all the info.

An idea to implement Skip Bo, perhaps more interesting than the current solution. In Skip Bo, you can use a 1 card to start a new discard pile when one didn't exist before, as that starts a new stack. I think it would be fun to allow a variable number of discard piles in the amalgam like this. Preferably also with a way to eliminate a discard pile.

@@MassacresMansion I think with all of the discard pile shenanigans added, it could either be really fun or overly complicated. It's definitely worth considering, but also probably necessary to playtest. Also, having alternate ways to add or remove discard piles, and incentives to do so, might be necessary to complement this.
challenge mode could also be called "Golf Mode" as you want to get the least points at an end of a round

28:28 I remember this one. I used to play it whenever I can on my Grandparents' TV whenever I could, and I always picked Rockem Sockem Uno. It's ashamed that this not only didn't get turned into a physical Uno card game (because I think it could have been, or maybe not) but now it's pretty much unplayable due to the service's discontinuation in 2013 and it hasn't shown up anywhere else before and since. If this version hadn't been added in this episode, I would have made sure that it did, so I'm glad it did.

Here's all the Japanese uno versions i could find info about. "Uno Pokemon Black and White." (Team Rocket Wild Card Rule.) Only players with a yellow 1 cards in their hand can play cards until your next turn. If a player doesn't have a yellow 1 cards their turn is skipped. (Master Ball Wild Card Rule.) When played, you can pic any card from the draw pile except for the Team Rocket card and place it on top of the discard pile. The next player must follow what that card says to do. "Uno Pokemon X and Y." (Pikachu's "Thunderbolt" Wild Card Rule.) Discard all Yellow cards in your hand. (Meowth and Wobbuffet's "Trick Everyone!" Wild Card Rule.) Make all other players take turns drawing 1 card each. They are not allowed to immediately play the drawn card. "Uno Pokemon Sun and Moon." (10 Million Bolt Wild Card Rule.) Everyone takes turns discarding all yellow number cards in their hand. If the player holding this card can't discard yellow cards then they choose a color and discard all card of that color from their hand. "Uno Doraemon, 2016,." (Secret Wild Card Rule.) Choose a player, that player must show you one of their cards. "Uno Doraemon, 2024." (Recital Wild Card Rule.) Everyone except the one who played this card must put down their cards and cover their ears as fast as possible. The last player to do so draws 3 cards. "Uno Sanrio Hello Kitty." (Red Ribbon Wild Card Rule.) Discard all red cards. "Uno Kiki's Delivery Survive." (Old Monster Wild Card Rule.) Give two cards from your hand to another player and choose a color. If you have less than two cards that you can give, then you only choose a color . "Uno My Hero Academia." (Death Pattern Mokuso.) When played, touch another player, that player must draw 5 cards. "Uno One Piece, 2003." (Shanks Wild Card Rule.) When this card is played, the player may ask another player to show all cards of the same color as stated by the play, this can only be cancelled by playing a 1 number card. (Uno Uno no Mi Wild Card Rule.) play with another action card copy the effect of that card. "Uno One Piece, 2012." (Shanks Wild Card Rule.) Give one of your cards to somebody else. (Blackbeard Wild Card Rule. ) Everyone other than you must draw 2 card. "Uno One Piece, New World." (Fire Fist Ace Wild Card Rule.) Play with action cards to double the effect. (Hancock's Mero Mero no Mi Wild Card Rule.) Only players with a 1 number card in their hand can play cards until your next turn. If a player doesn't have a 1 number card their turn is skipped. "Uno One Piece 2016." (Law {Shambles} Wild Card Rule.) Choose a color then choose a player, everyone excluding the player you choose discards all cards in their hand of the chosen color. "Uno Haikyuu" (Weirdo, Quick Attack Wild Card Rule.) This card can be used on anyone's turn, if you play it on another player's turn you can choose a color. The original player then discards a card. Also this card cannot be discarded on top of a Draw 2 card or a Wild Draw 4 card. "Uno Dragon Ball Super." (Beerus and Champa Wild Card Rule.) Choose a color, you can give all cards in your hand of the chosen color to the player next to you. "Uno Naruto." (Yellow Flash Wild Card Rule.) The person who plays this card can return all yellow cards in their hand to the draw pile. Then choose a color and resume play. These are the only versions i couldn't find info on. "Uno Monster Dream Company." "Uno Detective Conan." "Uno Spin One Piece." "Uno Moomin Japan." (Couldn't find info on the english version either.)

I choose to believe the "touch a player" portion of the MHA card allows other players to attempt to evade your touch, turning the game into tag for a short period.
Not something for the amalgam, but as a possibly amusing aside today I found a Lord of the Rings Tarot deck from 1996 at a thrift store which has rules for a game with the cards. That game turned out to be Uno in all but name. Well not exactly Uno. It is missing the skip, reverse, draw 2, and wild draw 4 cards. But it has playing cards matching suit or number if the card on the discard pile, uses the major arcana as wild cards, and even has a player with only one card left have to say 'one ring'. It does have some interesting things with it. Cards are light or dark, and players get points for being the most light and most dark each round. Plus there is the one ring, which can be taken by players to make themselves the ringbearer for extra points. Not Uno and not Mattel, but still an amusing coincidence finding it on the same day as one of your videos.

Fun thing is that Challenge Uno ruleset’s actually how I was taught how to play the game. Game ended altogether at the threshold, and the winner was determined by the lowest score like in Hearts in my version, but yeah.

It might be smart to have a separate pile for redecorated cards, akin to how Magic has commanders that let you cast cards from exile (AKA, Banished or out of game zone) with certain restrictions. Basically, "exile" your newly colored cards, and set them aside. Sucks if people jump in, though

I love how the format of this series has really settled into a nice groove over time! Very satisfying to see these re-occuring segments like Uno Note and Clarification Time and such in every video now. Feels formulaic but in a way that's fun to watch for me lol.

Very excited to see this come closer and closer to completion. Hopefully someone makes a Monopoly Amalgam that combines a lot of the rules. Maybe some from Empire or Crooked Cash. Maybe even Cheaters Edition? (This is just speculation. I just rewatched Valefisk’s Ultimate Monopoly video and thought that it still lacked some challenge. Probably someone else’s problem tbh)

I grew up with the GBA UNO Skip-Bo combo pack! Since I really liked UNO as a kid, that's the one of the two I played more, and I would always bump the starting cards to 15. Glad to see I can now do the same thing in the Amalgam! >:)

I say change the lucky tooth and other cards to be the card that's place in front of you and use MTGs tapping mechanic to track the amount of turns it has instead of flipping.

For the toe hold mechanic, and mechanics like it, you should probably make a pass through all the rules later to reword "choose x cards" to "choose up to x cards", to reduce ambiguity about whether or not a player can be picked for the card effect. Or, alternatively, maybe the final ruleset can include a line like "whenever you pick x cards in yours or another player's hands, and that hand has fewer than x cards, you just pick the available cards."?
Don’t worry, all of the keywords and terminology will be dealt with in the next phase of development.

Uno actually WAS on the original gameboy. Twice, in fact. But only in Japan. How did it work? Shades of grey/white/black. And I think color support was given when you played on either Gameboy Color, or Super Gameboy. One of the two, I'm not sure.

I don’t know if you have plans for this but I think adding a few « colour cards » that are just a solid colour with the colour blind identifier could be added so people can use them to remember what colour things are, this mainly for the redecorate card and any cards that behave similarly but it could also be helpful when cards don’t show what colour the discard pile is as you would have to pick up the cards from there to find out if no one remembers which could disadvantage that player having a card you just put in front of the discard pile or something like that would help people remember Sorry if this is a bit long

So as you might remember that I've been around since the start of this whole thing at the very least. However due to personal reasons I was forced to not have access to internet for a few months which put me woefully behind in this whole series and I'm am now FINALLY caught back up to current videos officially after watching the majority of the playlist from not being able to sleep and the rest after I woke up from a short rest. Thank you so much for this project I wish I could help more but I'm definitely going to be trying to get the basic version, if there is a deluxe version and the TTS regular+deluxe potential for sure I'll be there as a big fan of uno and a collector, oh and any expansions of course

Woo! Finally caught up on the whole series in time for the new episode. Overall thoughts on the series: it’s really fun seeing all the wild and wacky versions of Uno and really cool seeing how you’re finding ways to combine them, and the synergies different types might have. I’m not sure if I’ll ever play the final product, since I don’t think anybody I know irl would be interested in it, but I’m still looking forward to see what this all looks like at the end.

I think having some cards (with little sliders to help indicate the current option) to help determine the starting number of cards, number of draw when Uno missed, hand size that gets you eliminated, what game mode is being played, etc… would be helpful to players. I know this is almost like a BUG, so I understand if it won’t be included.
Perhaps this could be a deluxe feature!
All right. I rewatched the video a second time. And I'm sorry for being so wordy, but I have quite a lot to say :D 10:10 I'm honestly impressed. I thought that the "Redecorate" and "Double Cross" cards would have to be excluded from a physical game. I didn't have any suggestions on what could be done. But that's a neat idea you got there. 10:50 I mean, the original intent was - the card doesn't yet trigger. You just add a copy of it to your hand, to own two copies in your hand. Which is why my suggestion on how to implement it was "seperate the card from the rest of your hand, to indicate you have two of them". But you don't actually use it until you use it, you know. 11:55 you made it more balanced, and possible in a physical form. I like it. But it's important to note that normally in Uno, any "Draw" effect has you add cards to your hand, and also skip your turn. And while "Lucky Croc Tooth" reflects draw effects, it actually does NOT negate your turn still being skipped. 12:07 you mean BLACK WILD would be its own Black color. As you have Wilds of other colors, too :P 12:25 I don't remember what character in story gave you that card, but I think it was a sumo fighter, or something? 13:07 well, in the case of Toe Hold card, given how extremly overpowered the true effect is - why not use the "Description of the inventory item" for it? Cuz it is an official text rule in the game, even if it differs from gameplay. In that case, the 3 locked cards are only locked for 1 turn. I mean, I do like it lasting for more than one turn, but, ya know, the option is there if you want it. 13:48 you're more curious about how all these cards fit together, than you are about the pirate gorilla on the box art? :P Anyway, as the name Undercover suggests - you are an undercover agent, and you travel the world, meeting a variety of interesting characters. Like, the clone card was obtained from a Mad Scientist character in Transylvania. While "Highland Two-Step" was gotten in Scotland, and is just a celebration of their traditions. Yeah, the themes are still weird. And the story is even crazier. 13:54 specifically - two opponents. You can NOT choose yourself. It's an important distrintion, because the "Wild Horseplay" card in Uno Horses DOES allow you to pick yourself as one of the targets. Thus, the rule needs to specify that. 14:01 I see you skipped the "Green Sleep" card. But it would be implemented similarly to the " 3 Game Suspension" card. Just have the player not be able to participate in the game for 3 turns, but still be able to be targetted by Draw effects. That would work, in my opinion. 14:30 I understand the reason for you changing how this effect works. But in my opinion, only having to draw 2 cards feels like too much of a downgrade. How about first rolling a d6 to determine how many cards the player has to draw? I just feel like it should be more powerful than just two cards. 14:43 again, important to note that it's two opponents. You can't target yourself. 15:30 well, this card is the same as "Lipslide", that you already have once on each color. So is there gonna be an extra green copy? Would there be a mechanical distinction? Would "Lipslide" count as one symbol, but this counts as having both a "Skip" and a "Draw 2" symbol of it, effecting how it can be matched across the discard piles? Does the "Lipslide" symbol not have its "Draw 2" effect skip the player, while the Undercover's version does? What's the plan there? 17:44 but what about the general rule from Uno GBC? If you falsely accuse a player of failing to say Uno (like if the player actually did say Uno, or if that player has more than more card), you are penalized by having to draw 2 cards without missing your turn. It seems like a neat rule to me, so why not include that as well? 18:01 technically, it's called "Wild Symbol". I do like your re-interpretation of the rule, that would work well for the Amalgam. 19:30 how do you think you'll handle cards that make you lose points during Survival mode? Such as the Hearts mechanic, and the Unlucky 13 card? 22:40 well, see, my idea was to move around not just the top cards of the discard piles, but the entire discard piles themselves get moved around the table. That would be funny. And can potentially cause the player to make a mess of the discard piles, which penalizes them by that one rule. That's essentially the effect. 23:02 in then, if you move all 4 discard piles around with the Scramble rule, it would make more sense to afterwards manually move the Blockade card onto an edge discard pile. 23:28 what about immedietly gaining points for those? That could be fun. 23:30 Also, if you added the Gold Wild already, does this mean "50 Years of Being Wild" is getting eliminated? Since it just adds Gold Wilds? 24:00 but technically speaking, you already have that listed in the Amalgam doc, as part of base Uno? It's the same as the "Alternative gameplay" that you have listed. I was thinking you'd add the "Forced to play Wild" optional rule, instead of this one, lol.

OK! I have read through this whole thing and made a bunch of changes to the rules doc along the way. I appreciate this breakdown! Some things remain how I described them though for various reasons. To address a couple of your questions, most point-altering mechanics will remain untouched in the various gamemodes. It'll really change up the strategy! Also, 50 years of being wild is not being eliminated, I just chose not to make the golden block card an actual gold card.

You could set aside the "colored" cards and use a D10 to indicate what color they are, if you're getting custom D10s you could absolutely make each face actually have the corresponding color on them too, along side the numbers, or if you wanted to keep the D10s a single color for cost you could put the numbers inside of or next to whatever symbols you plan on using for color blind accessibility
That is a good solution in theory. But it would require there being a spare d10.

@@JDZeroZero Well, thr way Luke is doing it-normally when you play a Wild Card, you don't get to choose the color, and the next player to play on top of it does. But considering the GBC Uno special cards take on the color of the card underneath, that is another place where it could be used, yeah.
Another solution would be a bunch of colored tokens or just discs to use as indicators, those are *very* cheap to produce depending on what you make them from, I've seen them cut from the very same sheets of playing card stock used in decks, which would also mean you could make them double sided and only need 5 types on the sheet
That's a neat idea, but adding all of these extra game components would be a little pricey.

I have watched every part of this series and have yet to comment anything because you’re very thorough and I’ve never made card games before! So please forgive me if this has been said before (I bet it has). But imagining actually owning the final chemicards game myself, a feature that I would find incredibly valuable is a page either in the manual or on its own that has a few card + rule preset lists that have been tested to be balanced that limit the scope of how many cards are actually used and how many extra mechanics are present (such as the number of discard piles and dice etc), thereby making chemicards effectively contain multiple different games while also easing everyone on the table into the game’s ginormous list of mechanics by only having them learn so many of them at a time. Obviously anyone can choose to limit what cards they put in the deck, but for people like me and my friends who are not card game designers, coming up with our own presets without already understanding the entire game and making it actually balanced would probably be impossible. Im sure whether something like this is included with the game or not people online will come up with their own lists, but including a few examples in the box would be very convenient! A large potential problem I noted though is that due to the cards being double sided, the viability of eliminating specific cards from the deck in general is heavily dependent on how the card sides end up being combined. Anyway, love your videos and looking forward to more!
Glad you're enjoying the series! This is a good idea honestly. Whether I add it or not will likely be a time factor, because instead of just play testing one game, I would be play testing several, which would take significant time and effort. I'll do this if I can, but there are no guarantees. XD

I’ve been following this project from the beginning, and it’s interesting. At first I followed along great with each rule addition and could realistically play it, but at this point I’m just enjoying the insanity of this game. After you finish the Amalgam you should make a how to play video, roughly 12 hours long, then people will finally understand everything that’s going on. If people are still confused make a second part that’s 20 hours long, then release both of them on disc with the game.

I suggest, since there's multiple Colour Exclusives from Uno Undercover for each colour, that you move some to the additional colours added in the amalgam. I also think that it would be cool once the characters are done for each character to have a "signifier" colour or something. You could have the colours represent elements or something similar.
