Snow plows rely on speed to push the same to the sides. Rotaries can get through thicker ice that plows can't, at the necessary expense of speed. Basically, sometimes conditions are too dangerous for plows. That's why rotaries were developed.
When I clapped eyes on this, my muscles immediately told me what kind of snow this was. As a native of Minnesota, and after years of snow removal, my aching muscles told me all about it.
Legend has it this video was posted 2 years ago and he's still on the job.. that's the only record I see here

Yep. Lots of folks don't understand that fact. Rotaries were made to handle the toughest snow jobs... and all it took was a minute on wikipedia to figure that out lol.

That’s insane. I live in northern Canada and we get lots of snow during the winter but rarely this much all at once. The snow is nearly higher than then train. Not to mention snow drifts and wet snow can be like concrete to move. This snow is just packed in there.
Very obviously not all at once, the road right next to it is free from snow. They just did not remove it for a long time.
I’m surprised they do not have a screw auger extending out in front to breakup the wall of snow. Similar to the screws that are used to split lumber.

This was filmed in Romania in February 2012 in Buzau County. After weeks of snowstorms, in some regions was a 5-6 meters or more very dense and frozen snow layer. Very hard to remove. Some villages were complete covered by snow (the snow layer was higher than houses). It's poorly designed too, it needs large augers in front to chew the ice/snow into more manageable amounts that are then moved to the thrower part/blades.

Seems like the plow could have a screw in the middle to start break up the snow pack then the blades could gather and remove it more easily and quicker. The train could then move at maybe 1mph.
