Is Myanmar's military losing ground? | Inside Story

2024 ж. 7 Сәу.

Myanmar's military government has suffered significant defeats at the hands of anti-coup opposition groups in recent weeks.
Karen fighters and other rebel movements have seized a vital town on the border with Thailand and tried to attack the capital using drones laden with explosives.
So, what's next for military junta as it deals with these security challenges?
And do the recent gains rebel groups have made represent a turning point for Myanmar?

There's hardly any Muslim, Hindu or Christian there up until Colonialism. I suppose it's fair to say that many of these tragedies that nation facing today, such as racial, ethnic and religious conflicts, started with Colonialism. Here in Singapore, a tiny island with 6 million souls lives like sardines in a can, elsewhere in nearby vast bountiful Australia which is ten thousand times 10,000 bigger with a mere 27 million inhabitants. A similar situation in tiny and packed Japan, which is running out of space and land. Do you know that their living room and bedroom are the same place, and that most Japanese people sleep in their living room. Here's the one solution I see. Why don't Burma's Rohingya Muslim, Hindu & Christian population, if they wish, move to a place like Anglo Colonized Australia/New Zealand in the Asia-Pacific region? After all, these are Asia-Pacific lands looted from Native Asians-Pacific islanders.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned the latest military development, i.e. the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) attacking junta. KIA is one of the most powerful insurgent groups in Myanmar. It didn't join the Three-Brotherhood led Operation 1027 but took its own action in last week to fight againt junta. This is a significant development. The U.S. just announced that it would give aid of 1.2 billion to four insurgent groups, KIA, which is pro U.S, being one of them. This might be the reason KIA began to fight. If Wa army, another major ethnic military force, also starts to fight against junta, I'd be much more optimistic.

  • A guerilla army could potentially conduct a stealthy recruitment campaign within urban areas, recruiting and arming freedom fighters and inserting experienced guerilla fighters for intelligence gathering, establishing forward operating bases, creating supply routes to smuggle heavy weapons and explosives into the cities, and setting up safe houses for their forces. In theory, such a campaign could culminate in a coordinated assault on critical military infrastructure, similar to North Vietnam's Tet Offensive in the 1970s. It is important to note that history has shown that making enemies of one's own people inevitably leads to destruction for all involved. Myanmar's struggle is no different from Vietnam’s own struggle, the communist north was driven by the ideology of unifying the country, while the corrupt south was interested in making money in those times of conflict.. Ideology and beliefs are critical in war, an ideologically driven group would do everything in their power to achieve victory regardless of the cost.

  • The ethnics armies haven't just been opposed to military rule for many decades, they've been opposed to being ruled by the Burma/Myanmar government since the beginning. It stems from the British obsession of demanding to keep the country as one in order to grant independence when the different ethnic groups wanted to breakaway. Backdoor deals were made, like the unity govt was supposed to only be temporary in order to get the British to grant independence, the promise that the ethnic group could then later breakaway and form their own self governing states was not kept.

    @abmong@abmongАй бұрын
    • This is the most absurd and studipd1st 😅 thing I heard. They all respected and were under Aung San, Byokye, you probably don't know who is the father of the country. They only oppose the Na Win government when they assassinated him.

      @zinny999@zinny999Ай бұрын
    • @@zinny999 No, the ethnic groups always wanted to form their own self governing states. Aung San, Aung San Suu Kyi's father was well respected, that's why he was able to get the leaders of the ethnic groups to agree to the unity govt, but it was always with the promise that once independence was gained the ethnic groups would be allowed to break away to form their own countries. The reason they had to do that was because the British would not grant independence unless the country so as united Burma. The secret deal was reneged on by the Bamar dominated government. Hence why the ethnic groups always maintained their own armies to fight for independence from Burma/Myanmar. This is why the ethnic armies are fighting now to get a federal system so they can have self governance in lieu of full independence.

      @abmong@abmongАй бұрын
    • @@abmong let me guess it was the Christians who converted in 19th century who want to break away? Wherever the missionaries go they sow seeds of divisions.

      @mogambo4565@mogambo4565Ай бұрын
    • @@mogambo4565 This conflict can't actually be blamed on the Christians, not unless you count the British Empire as Christian, and even then they're only partly to blame. Problem stems from Burma/Myanmar's own failures in integrating the ethnic groups into the main national identity of the country. It would be a bit of an essay to explain it all, but long story short. Burma had always been ruled as a feudal empire rather than a country. What I mean by that is when the Burmese Kings conquered those ethnic city states, the ethnic lords of the cities were allowed to keep their position if they served under the Burmese King and provided troops when the King called for them, basically they became the Burmese King's high ranking officials. When the British came, they removed the Burmese Konbaung Dynasty but kept that feudal system largely in place, instead of reporting to the Burmese King they just now reported to the British Governor. When the British left there was no leader the ethnic lords needed to reported to, hence they became the leaders of their own ethnic armies, later a lot of these armies would splinter or new ones formed with communists ideology, hence why there are multiple ethnic armies in some ethnic control regions, some of them fighting amounst themselves, communists vs ethno-nationals. Contrast that with neighboring Thailand where those medieval ethnic cities states had been much better integrated into "Thainess" and no longer feel a separate people. Where the minority ethnic groups in Burma/Myanmar feels treated as second class citizens. The ethnic minorities of Thailand are equal citizens under the King. The other thing that Thailand did, back when it was still Siam was the Siamese/Thai King successfully abolished the feudal system and took the old city states into central royal control. The regional armies were rolled into the national army. The families of those regional lords were allowed to keep their wealth and given positions in government and were allowed to retire out of politics until those families were no long in politics, some are still in regional politics, but that's by their own choice and were elected under democratic system. Problem is the Junta Generals just don't command the same authority as the old Burmese Kings. In this modern age, since Myanmar no longer has Kings nor want to return to a royal system, only a democratic leader would command that kind of respect, and the ethnic groups would also have to feel included in the government if Myanmar has any hope of remaining unified as one country. First kick out the Junta, second form a Federal system were the ethnic regions have some autonomy, last but not least, abolish the Tatmadaw and form a new national army from the anti junta and ethnic armies, appoint the generals of the ethnic armies as national generals, get them to rolled their ethnic troops formally into the new national army.

  • You media and foreigners knew nothing at all. National Unity Government is not the one who chose arm resistance but the people of Myanmar are the one made a decision for arm resistance then NUG national union government was listening. Don't make the history opposite to the reality. You guys are not real expert about Burma. Burmese knew the best about Burma. Myanmar.

    • I will accept the fact that Arakan people and Rohingyas have hostile relationship but right now, Arakan army is not genociding Rohingya because of the religion or hatred. Arakan army have no choice but to eliminate rohingyas because Rohingyas are fighting for Myanmar Military which is forced to fight obviously. The one you should blame for all the atrocities in Myanmar is the Junta military.
